The U.N. Oil-for-Palaces Scandal, Part III

| 4 Comments | 1 TrackBack

Instapundit has more. The largest episode of corruption in history? Don't know, but at the very least it's in the top tier.

Here's a wild thought... at $10 billion and counting, plus the blood of the Iraqis the U.N. was supposed to be protecting and helping to feed, maybe there ought to be a congressional investigation about that.

As the late Ev Dirksen said, "A billion here and a billion there, and you're talking about real money".

This is small potatoes to these cats.

They'll pay attention if enough voters complain.

Stealing money has become the UN's chief function. Its "oil for peace" scam in Iraq had been its chief means of doing that, which is why the UN opposed our invasion so much. It has lost that income and is desperate to get back into the game so it can steal more. That is why the UN suddenly wants to go back to Iraq - that's where the money is.

A Congressional investigation would be nice, but what would it accomplish, practically speaking? Let's say they find a whole bunch of corruption (duh), like say, 90% of the budget cannot be accounted for. I think that the publicity might cause the American people to reconsider their current dues obligations in ways that would be the death knell of the organization.

I am not opposed to the death of the U.N. However, it does serve a few minor useful purposes related to international diplomacy, mostly in the areas of convenience. Since it is arguably likely that the U.N. will die at some point, I suggest that plans for a more accountable, more legitimate successor organization be discussed here in the blogosphere. Perhaps some useful ideas will coalesce and get picked up by people in a position to use them. Just a suggestion.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
