September 15, 2004New Energy Currents: 2004-09-15by Guest Author at September 15, 2004 3:12 AM
by John Atkinson of Chiasm Three years after September 11th, there is more attention given to non-oil energy sources than ever: energy independence is widely recognized as an essential long-term goal in the War on Terror, and concerns about the extent of our contribution to global climate change continue to multiply. Still, the increased public interest has not made the problems inherent in the massive project of transforming our energy systems any simpler. The goal is agreed upon, but the road is still unclear. Think of this roundup of energy news from the past two weeks as a series of signposts along several paths (including new paths using 'old' fossil fuels, which will almost certainly play an important role in the energy mix for decades at least), some of which intersect and run alongside each other, others which head in opposite directions - and some that we will doubtlessly abandon before we reach their end.
And, finally:
Thanks for reading! I'm headed to the AltWheels 'festival' in Boston this weekend, and will hopefully come back with lots of pictures of the latest, greatest, and weirdest sustainable transportation technologies and, if all goes well, me getting my drunk ass kicked at a sports bar while the Yankees re-extend their lead in the AL East... I hate to throw a wet blanket on a portion of your report, but I feel compelled. The reasons for this are threefold: So, those German modules traded up front energy costs to produce electricity which they will never be able to overcome. This is a huge waste of both money and energy. Remember, the energy used in production of the PV modules and supporting infrastructure is consumed UP FRONT, before energy production begins. If the module never hits breakeven, then vast sums of energy will be consumed earlier than if the equivalent energy was produced as needed by consuming petroleum or coal. JP, I am totally sympathetic to your wet-blanketude, though I was trying to approximate a 'I report, you decide' 'fair and balanced' ethos in the report. the only kind of round-about benefit I really see from these projects is that they 1) pump money into these solar companies that will hopefully help accelerate the development of more economically viable PVs as well as 2) increase the public awareness of 'alternatives', even if they aren't particularly sensible alternatives right now. Such attempts to move the market before its ready are often (not always) counterproductive in the end, I realize, but I'm talking silver linings here. As I kind of noted, I expect that the long-term fallout for this particular project will include a helping of economic pain. I believe the government should agressively investigate the possibility of using cold fusion as the future energy source to replace petroleum products.

I'm still unconvinced of the economics of wind power in the US. Due to higher energy costs in general in Europe or Japan it might be closer to break even, and in the Iwate prefecture case there might be a geographic isolation issue from the normal power grid which makes bringing in power uneconomical. But from what I've seen here in NM, where a mandatory 5% "green power" regulation was passed by the regulatory commission without reference to economic costs and benefits, this particular set of investments is not being made on a clearly logical basis. 1)John Atkinson..do you by any chance have a link on the energy consumption of solar cell mfg? 2)Solar energy discussions mostly focus on photovoltaics...but there is an alternative approach using mirrors to focus energy on a boiler of some type to generate steam, and from there electricity can be made the old-fashioned way. A medium like molten salt can be used to store heat. Even if the storage is only a few hours, there would be huge power-system stability benefits compared with the ever-fluctuating output from photovoltaics.

Why no link to the great PBS series Extreme Oil? China continues to signal that nuclear energy will be a big part of its future... It can do this because it hides the trust costs of nuclear power (just like France, etc.). Nuclear simply cannot compete with gas or coal from a cost perspective, even when gas is highly priced. See the MIT study on nuclear power for some sobering insight into nuclear power's significant problems. ...they're also forging ahead with research into Potentially Revolutionary pebble-bed reactor designs. People have been pursuing these for years. A pebble bed reactor is a good generation or two off - and right now, if you want to produce more power from nuke plants, you're going to have to do it with more LWRs. For a taste of the nuclear future, do NOT miss this excellent review of the state of the art of next generation nuclear reactors (via Green Car Congress, which provides other links on the subject)! Go to the MIT site on the future of nuclear power (indeed, I think that is its title). From a libertarian perspective nuclear power - a mature industry that shouldn't require things like carbon taxes to be competitive - is a boondoggle. Tom, I'm still unconvinced of the economics of wind power in the US. Not one "green power" idea comes without some sort of government subsidy; be it in the form of a "portfolio standard" or flat out cash payments. David Foster: Sorry, I don't have a link to an analysis of the costs of PV manufacturing. I'm a useless policy wonk, not an engineer, damnit! I forget how you make that "embarassed" emoticon but I'd be making it now if I could.

Gary- thanks for the response, info like that is hard to come by unless you are reading in this specific area constantly, which I'm not anymore. One problem with any energy source is that once it gets beyond a certain point, its production almost inevitably includes some sort of government subsidy. Coal, for example, is subsidized in a ex post facto sense by the RR land grants of the 1800's, as the RR's transport most of the US's coal and tipping costs for coal at the electrical plant would certainly be higher if the RRs had not been built the way they did. What people need to consider is how and whether government should grant new, but similar subsidies for alternative energy sources. A blanket subsidy for anything like what happened in the late 70's isn't the answer either.
