Ironically, neither of them are about Christmas. But both of them are about giving, in the best sense of the term.
Story #1 is from Iraq, via M. Simon. Capt. Dan Mattson turned what could have been an awkward and difficult moment into something special for all concerned.
Story #2 is a bit closer to home. I haven't talked about this, but over the past few weeks a number of bloggers have been working to help a certain gentleman escape from a dangerous situation in Iran and find freedom. Our Iranian friend is now out of the country and in a safe location, with people on the ground set up to help his transition and a refugee application in progress.
Each story gives us cause to reflect, and to offer thanks.
Iraq Post-op: Let's start with the quiet achievement represented by Capt. Mattson's role in the Iraq story. Opportunities like that are all around us, but few seize them. When someone does, few notice. The focus shifts to the moment itself, as it must. To do good when it matters, even if no-one is watching, won't bring you fame... just a wonderful life.
With a little bit of forethought and a habit of mindfulness in the New Year, we can spot opportunities both big and small to make that kind of contribution. What a simple, powerful, and keepable New Year's resolution!
Even once makes a difference.
Iran Post Stress: I'm told that our Iranian friend extends his profound gratitude to the crew of elves (Gary Metz, Emily, Jack Wheeler, Downeast Blog's Kerry Dupont, Michael L., and Winds team members Dan Darling, Joe & Armed Liberal) for their advice and assistance along the way.
It was really touch-and-go for a while, and there were times I thought this might end very badly - but Christmas Eve had a gift up its sleeve. Thanks, Santa!

Just dropping by my blogs to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
Loved the parade pics!
Joe, thanks for the link. I hope we can learn about the Iranian circumstances once the danger's past and everyone concerned has had the chance to catch their breath.
In the meantime, merry Chrismas...per your other posts today, to all.

SCORE! Now this is the kind of liberation that shows real promise -- bringing freedom to the people in Iran one dude at a time through decentralized action.
Excellent work.
Let me know if there's any way I can help with future activities of this kind.
Yes, AMac, there will be a couple of interviews with our Iranian friend, and we will tell some of that story. But for now, he just needs to rest a lot and get oriented. As nerve-wracking as this thing has been on our end, just imagine what it was like on his.
Just landed in Florida, so no interviews until I get back in January. Meanwhile, gotta love MT 3.1's "Future auto-publishing" feature.
