Winds of War: Feb 24/05

by Colt at February 24, 2005 10:58 PM

Welcome! Our goal at Winds of Change.NET is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the global War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused every Monday & Thursday. Thursday's Winds of War briefings are given by me, Colt, of Eurabian Times.

TOP TOPICS

  • Confessions, confessions. Terrorists and Syrian officers on Iraqi TV spell out quite clearly that the war in Iraq is regional. Dan has the analysis here. Hammorabi has more.

Other Topics Today Include: diplomatic delusions with Iran; mass-release of terrorists; Lebanon as a model for retreat; NATO would send troops to Israel; A-Q may go for soft targets in Kuwait; successes in Yemen; American Muslim charged with plot to kill president; Saudis extradite American jihadi; Madrid tower fire - arson?; Dutch intelligence watch Saudi-funded mosques; Theo van Gogh revisited; FSB nails Beslan financier; GSPC more of a threat post-Hattab; Pakistani troops to fire on U.S. forces; Taliban to give in?; serious warning of attack in Aceh; Phillipines arrests thwart attacks; three arrested suicide bombers in Kenya; GSPC ambushes army; and much more.

IRAN

  • A report that Osama Bin Laden has been captured by Iranian forces has been denied.

THE MIDDLE EAST

  • "So, what should the PA do if the confiscate heavy weapons?" A fair question, given Israel's willingness to hand over security to the PA, a question to which the Ministry of Defence has no answer?
  • In another move to calm tensions and boost moderate, reformist democrat Abu Mazen, Israel has released 500 terrorists. More specifics here.
  • An Israeli-Arab who aided Hezbollah and other terrorists has been sentenced to ten years.
  • Israel's Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has informed delegates at a Jewish conference in the U.S. that the ad-hoc fleeing from Lebanon is the model he wants Israel to follow in Gaza. He also said that, post-retreat, he expects the situation around Gaza to be similar to the Lebanon-Israel border. 28 Israelis, most of them civilians, have been killed along the Lebanese border in the last four years.

THE GULF

  • Concerns are mounting that al-Qaeda may turn to attacking 'soft-targets' in Kuwait.
  • Good news about the Marine who shot a terrorist playing dead in a jihadi stronghold in Fallujah - he won't be charged.

THE AMERICAS

EUROPE

  • The Madrid skyscraper fire - arson?
  • Dutch intelligence is keeping an eye on six suscpicious Islamic groups. The Interior Ministry from August 2004 describes the groups and/or mosques as "associations with an outspoken Salafist character originating from a mission and finance from Saudi Arabia".

ASIA & AUSTRALASIA

  • The UN warns that a lack of development in Afghanistan could lead it to becoming a terror-haven once again. A lot has been said about the UN report showing Afghanistan being 173rd of 178 countries (Arthur Chrenkoff has a rebuttal here), but the change from 'could' to 'is' is progress not to be scoffed at.

AFRICA

  • The proposed UN peace-keeping mission to southern Sudan is expected to cost $1 billion. Expect news of the UN's child-sex ring in Sudan to be featured on Winds of War soon.
  • Algeria puts the number of dead in the civil war at 150,000. On the plus side, they think the GSPC number at something like 300-500.

Thanks for reading! If you found something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip hyperlink to today's "Winds of War". If you think we missed something important, use the Comments section to let us know.

How does it feel to support a war that used US blood and treasure, which ended up installing a Shiite theocracy in Iraq?

Tell us.

#2 from Colt at 11:19 pm on Feb 24, 2005

Awesome. Simply awesome. Shi'ites rock.

#3 from Brian H at 12:09 am on Feb 25, 2005

If you have a stomach of iron and nerves of steel, read this:
Amnesty International vs. Iraq.

#4 from Stealbuttons at 12:37 am on Feb 25, 2005

Isreal was always State Sponsored Terrorism. Its neat to see the Mossad back at work!

#5 from Joe Katzman at 4:02 am on Feb 25, 2005

I second the motion - Iraqi Shi'ites do rock. Kurds too. One day we'll get the Saudi Shi'ites a'rocking, and have a big Middle Eastern jam session....

#6 from Sajah at 12:11 pm on Feb 25, 2005

Tell me Joe, what is the difference between a good Islamist and a bad Islamist?

Tell me about the history of Dawa (working for an Islamist Iraq since the 1950s) and the "Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq"--what kind of pluralist democracy do they have in mind for Iraq?

You guys are a sick little bunch of nutcases. Completely out to lunch.

#7 from Mark Buehner at 2:47 pm on Feb 25, 2005

Why dont you go look at what they have said and check it out? And count them.

#8 from jinnderella at 3:38 pm on Feb 25, 2005

lol, Colt! You're awesome too!

Y'know, the Kurds are Sunni muslims. Everyone seems to conveniently forget that when decrying the poor disenfranchised Baathists.

#9 from Joe_A at 4:02 pm on Feb 25, 2005

More about 3/11

Hit first, hit hard, and keep hitting, Mr. Martinez-Pujalte

Iraq is not a theocracy. If it becomes one, and becomes a threat, we'll probably give up 'nation-building' next time. We could have just gone in, blown everything up and sown the ground with salt - Carthage for the 21st century. But we're giving Iraqis a chance that I hope they don't screw up.

Y'know, the Kurds are Sunni muslims.

Iraq is more tribal than religious, and that goes for the Kurds doubly so. The Kurds are unlikely to go Saudi on us.

Thanks, Joe_A. Feel free to email either the Monday team or myself with items that are appropriate.

#11 from Mark Buehner at 7:51 pm on Feb 25, 2005

The upside is OBL is a Sunni, and we all know from the Hussein-Al Qaeda argument that people of differing religious backgrounds would never work together or support each other. So we've got that going for us, right oh masters of the consistant argument?

#12 from crazy at 12:38 am on Feb 26, 2005

i don't know where to post it, so i do it here.
this site is really crazy. for me it seems nobody uses his eyes. has every american such an egoists' nature? why did iraqi's fly into your towers? america's killed hundreds of thousands of people over there. they strike back, and you all don't understand this reaction?

you'll all have to learn that you're not the only ones on this earth. this site is just a brainwash...

#13 from crazy at 1:00 am on Feb 26, 2005

shit, this is a real racists, unhealthy-nationalists war-site. you even laugh at organisations like amnesty international.
a band of low-life criminals you are...

#14 from Joe Katzman at 4:44 am on Feb 26, 2005

Dude, when in comes to Amnesty, we aren't laughing. Organiztions that betray both their foundng purpose and those who depend on them aren't funny.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
