May 5, 2005More on al-Libbiby Dan Darling at May 5, 2005 6:12 AM
I really need to find time to do a primer on this guy, but finals are going to be interfering with that for the immediate future. In the meantime, let me just make a couple of important clarifications to yesterday's quickie briefing based on what I gathered mostly from talking to people yesterday as well as watching media coverage on the US cable networks:
It is entirely possible to reconcile all three accounts into a coherent narrative.
Anyways, hope this information proves useful. If verification is needed for any of this, drop a comment and I'll try to source what I can. UPDATE: Chrenkoff has a before and after photo of al-Libi that's worth your time - plus an amusing gallery of fellow "before and after" shots. Tracked: May 5, 2005 7:17 AM
The Pictorial Cliff's Notes: The War on Terror from The Word Unheard

Hi Dan, AFP claims to have seen the CIA's classified list, and al-Libbi is listed as #3. Any indication if he and al-Adel were splitting duty? That would be my guess based ont he confusion. Either way, he is definitely a big fish. At the least al Qaeda's commader in Pakistan, where a big chunk of the organization resides, has lots of information on the network. I don't know, Bill. This may have to do with the fact that there are now 2 military committees, one in Pakistan, another in eastern Iran. All I can say is that I'm far from alone in saying that he ain't the #3 guy.

When I saw the guys photo, I had thought he had black eyes. My wife had similar blood drainage under her eyes when she hit her head several years back. But the photos aren't that good, so I don't know what it could be. I was thinking maybe a flash-bang going off near his face could have done something like this. Either way, BIG SCORE, and shows the value of our partnership with Pakistan. Keith, More precisely, it shows why we need to continue tolerating Pakistan and treating it as a nominal ally, while making rumbling noises that give them continued incentive to cooperate from legitimate fear of what the USA might to do in terms of siding with India. Oh, and keeping updated contingency plans in place for use should the jihadis take over Pakistan - which is not beyond the realm of possibility. See Patrick Belton's magisterial article set on Pakistan for a deeper understanding of what's going on there. I'd say "partnership" goes too far. Dan, No disagreements here, obviously there are differing views on his position. I suspect KSM's portfolio was split between him and al-Adel, and its causing this confusion about who is who. Either way, he is a significant catch. Joe, Dealing with Pakistan requires constant vigilence, and I am in complete agreement. I think I just repeated myself...repeated myself...

A basic question, that may have been addressed elsewhere: AQ is a fanatic Wahabbi/Sunni group, which regards Shia Islam as heretical and treat them like s*** in any country they run. Presumably there's no love lost on the Shia side either. Why would their "...current #3... Saif al-Adel, [be] currently based out of eastern Iran"? Is this a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend?" Is Iran milking AQ for $$ to build reactors? Is the Tehran regime not in 100% control of certain areas of the country? Have we done so much damage to AQ and the Sunni countries that harbor them that Iran actually looks like their best place to hunker down (let it be, Lord)? Saif al-Adel has been based in eastern Iran since August 2002 at the very latest, so this is not a new development. Like other al-Qaeda leaders in the country, he is under the protection of Brigadier General Qassem Suleimani and the Qods Force unit of the IRGC.
