Saad Eddin Ibrahim has an op-ed in today's New York Times regarding the emergence of democratic Muslim parties in the Middle East. He makes the case that we should not be afraid of political Islam's role in emerging democracy in the region.

Saad Eddin Ibrahim is a heroic Egyptian. Unlike Sayyid Qutb, who gave strength to militant Islam while languishing in Nasser's prison cells, Ibrahim envisions a progressive Egypt, sometimes from Mubarak's prisons. That's something we all should support.

Thanks for posting this.
The Conservatives that blame the riots just on Islam are taking a simplistic, arrogant view and are just trying to excuse ALL media of culpability. This serves their shared selfish interests.
They defend their brothers in the media before they care about the military that have to deal with the fallout of their arrogance.
The media, CONSERVATIVE included value the opinion of their peers more than the out-of-sight out-of- mind soldier's very life.
Fortunately the Egyptians didn't hang Ibrahim, like they did Qutb. If he goes around advocating the withdrawal of US aid from undemocratic regimes, though, they might decide to get out their rope again.
#3 Glen -- Possible that they would kill Ibrahim, but less likely than Qutb, since there is clearly a change taking place in the Middle East. Lebanon's revolution is a lesson for autocrats, who might think twice before killing their democratic opposition this time around.
Well actually, it was the US threatening to monkey around w/ Egypt's aid package that precipitated Ibrahim's release from prison. Of course, now he's tainted goods because the regime sicced its press dogs on him. But I think he's a brave dude for advocating justice and fairness even for people--the Islamists--who don't like him and see him as an Ameriki stooge.
