Pat Tillman Would Want the Truth

I'm a big fan of the late Pat Tillman. Grim's Hall has a post that urges a military investigation into the way Pat Tillman's death was handled, citing concerns about whether Section 1.7 of Executive Order 12958 re: the proper use of the "classified" category was followed.

Milblogger Grim concludes: "It shows less honor to Pat to have tried to keep the truth of his death from his family, than to have built some shining tale around it." I agree.

UPDATE: Reader "Lastango" makes a good point. I'd like the air cleared, myself.

I agree that there should be a full investigation of Tillman's death, but only because this was a friendly fire incident, not because of Tillman was an NFL player. Like any other soldier, we should mourn his loss, but no more so due to his celebrity.

I admire a guy who would give up a lucrative career in the NFL to enlist in the army. What a tragedy that he died in Afghanistan.

It's possible regulations prevented disclosure of details surrounding Tillman's death.

The military learned early on that Tillman had been killed by US troops, and (apparently) discovered quickly that members of Tillman's unit had destroyed his uniform and body armor to cover up what happened.

That would transform a friendly-fire review into the military equivalent of a criminal investigation, which may have prevented the Army from releasing details until the inquiry and disciplinary process was complete, in order to protect the integrity of the inquiry from pressure both internal and external, and to safeguard the rights of the accused.

Kudos on this.

You might have Slashdott-er "WoC'ed" him though. Link is out.

Oh, dear. We may have "tornadoed" him - the whole site is down.

Of course, it could also just be blogspot collapsing all by itself...

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
