Support Denmark Rally in Toronto This Saturday (Updated)

by Joe Katzman at March 11, 2006 10:31 PM

Pretty good rally. Probably about 70-100, not bad given the low level publicity announcing it. Over at The Sprit of Man, "Winston" has some pictures. And here's a few more, including one of me with my "Canadian flag in distres" (our media cut and run when it came to showing the cartoons, bowing before Shari'a theocracy, alas).

Met some folks there... quite a few were actually leftist devotees of Harry's Place. And good people, to boot. We'll disagree on some things very strongly, but at their core they are promoters of Western values and real human progress. This is, sadly, a small sliver of the global left these days - though we are proud to count several as our friends. But history rolls on, and even a small remnant may yet prove a saving one.

Support Denmark

Spirit of Man notes that a rally will be held on Saturday in Toronto, Canada.

DATE: Saturday, March 11th
TIME: 12:00-1:30PM
WHERE: 151 Bloor St. W near Avenue Rd., in front of the Danish Consulate

WHY: To show our solidarity with the nation and government of Denmark in their quest against the forces of radicalism, darkness and terror.

I will be posting the pictures on Saturday for sure

Public demonstrations of support for Denmark may just keep Muslim anger focused on Denmark. Wouldn’t it be better to focus on the cartoons and freedom of speech and form a broader, less easily attacked front?

Buying Denmark products would show support without making Denmark the point man.

#3 from Joe Katzman at 5:15 pm on Mar 09, 2006

No. The point is not to minimize profiles. The point is to drive the point home, and make it clear that attempts to impose Shari'a law on Western countries will be resisted.

Points in the abstract mean little. This is about a very specific incident, which makes a wider point vividly. Refusing to name the enemy or talk honestly about this conflict is what has led us to this morass in the first place.

Denmark was attacked. Denmark's leadership, unlike the US leadership's shameful cowardice, has resisted and stood up for the rights all of us should take for granted in a civilized society. Therefore Denmark has earned, and gets, support.

#4 from SPQR at 6:05 pm on Mar 09, 2006

Denmark gets support and I get havarti cheese. Win win.

#5 from Robert M at 3:15 am on Mar 10, 2006

I thought this was about US domestic policy under the Bush Administration. OOps this is winds of regression.

#6 from gringoman at 4:20 am on Mar 10, 2006

Sounds good. Incidentally, new post takes a look at the fact of Denmark under Islamic pressure and what the Americans are doing--or not doing--about it. 'The Dane That Roared.' At gringoman.com

#7 from Alex at 2:48 am on Mar 12, 2006

I wouldn't exactly say that the media "cut and run". At least two different stations were there for the majority of the demonstration, and they seemed to be conducting interviews nearly the entire time. Whether any of it makes it to the news is a different matter, but they certainly seemed interested in seing what we had to say.

#8 from Joe Katzman at 4:02 am on Mar 12, 2006

Alex... I meant that they cut and run on the issue of the cartoons themselves. Will make that clearer.

#9 from Joe Katzman at 4:05 am on Mar 12, 2006

And gringoman, it's ok to include URLs for your stuff - we even include instructions for it. Just put at least 8 words in front, so it doesn't blow up our main page layout.

Completely OT but...

Harry's is a freak show. I mean some of his commenters make the Kos trolls look like pikers. Mention Cuba and Zin will raise the bloody flag and slit as many throats as needed. One guy a couple weeks ago even commented about some worker in Cuba(coal shoveler or something) who grinned when recounting how he manned a firing squad. The commenter then went on to say how he was in favor of progressive taxation but wouldn't be too upset if he had to put bullets into a few middle class scum. Great blog...but if you have any hope in humanity steer clear.

So I don't know what you mean by "devotees of Harry's" but that's quite the crapshoot.

Great rally in Toronto on Saturday. Kudos to Daniel and Nav for organizing it. Hopefully the next one will be advertised better so we can really get a good turnout.

On the topic of Religious Tolerance, please note The Papal Chase, a hilarious gritty guerrilla documentary about one-man's obsession to meet the Pope (during World Youth Day in Toronto 2002), will be making it's theatrical debut at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto on March 23rd-24th, 2006. Come see the film that people are saying puts the "fun" back into Fundamentalist Religion, and stay for a post show symposium on Religious Tolerance in New Media and Culture.

Pullleeezzz ... just shoot me .
Or have me calculate the GST on my groceries.
It would be kinder.

replace the dollar signs with perpelxities and just add idiocies and subtracct sax and violins.

bottom line is atheists rule and fundies sux.
I wish to advocate total religious intolerance as they are all insane and irrational from my from my atheist standpoint.
I advocate free medical care for all religious people so long as they all get sickiatric help.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
