The 2006 World Cup was rife with political symbolism which may have upstaged the games themselves. Germans turned out to protest Iranian president Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial:Demonstrators waved Israeli flags at the rally outside the Alt Oper opera house in Germany's financial capital. Some held up signs reading "Support Israel Now!" and "Israel has the right to exist." . . . . an estimated 1,200 people, many of them German Jews, demonstrated against Ahmadinejad before Iran's loss to Mexico in its opening World Cup game in Nuremberg last Sunday. Portugal beat Iran 2-0 on Saturday. Also ganging up on Ahmadinejad were expat Iranians. Tigerhawk has a gallery of Persian soccer hotties, and Matthew adds (via email): They don't dress like that in Tehran. Also, being in Londonistan, I can tell you there are plenty of cars flying green, white and red, with "IRAN" written through the white stripe instead of the symbol on the post-revolution flag (mostly Beemers as it happens . . .).Germany caught the patriotic fever: When it came to the national anthem and its opening line "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles", so often accompanied by uncertainty and shoe-gazing, much of the 65,000-strong crowd rose to their feet and joined in, as did the national team. . . . . Patriotism has for decades been associated with nationalism, and the sinister past of blind obedience to a dictatorial leader. If you are a proud German you generally do not express that by flying the national flag or singing the national anthem, both of which have been more associated with Germany's far-right parties. . . . As successive generations distance themselves from the Nazi past - without forgetting it - there is a feeling that the World Cup is a timely celebration of Germany's modern democracy. It seemed to start a week before kick-off when fans from all nations began to arrive, proudly bearing their national colours from cars, camper vans and on thousands of replica shirts. At that point many of the 80 million Germans, with a proud footballing heritage, seemed to have asked themselves, why are we not doing the same?Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"? But the most conspicuous symbol of a politicized sports event was Ghanian player John Pantsil whipping out an Israeli flag every time his team scored a goal against the Czech Republic. (Pantsil also plays for the Israeli team, which would probably qualify for the tournament if it could compete with teams in the Asian region rather than the European one. Muslim countries won't play Israel, so . . . . Pantsil wanted to cheer up his Israeli fans.) Egypt was flummoxed and began generating Zionist conspiracy theories:"As soon as the referee blew his whistle to start the match, Egyptians were out enthusiastically, almost hysterically supporting Ghana, until defender John Paintsil took out the Israeli flag," read the paper's front page article. . . . "The main question on Egyptian lips after the match was "why?".Sandmonkey: Some are even calling for the saudi or Tunisian teams to start waving the palestinian flags after every football game that they win "in retalliation". We are all in Kindergarden apparently!Ghana Football Assoc. apologized, FIFA doesn't care. Well, the Olympics were always at least as much an opportunity to play subtle geopolitical games as to overt athletic ones, so why not the World Cup? Tracked: July 9, 2006 1:55 PM

If you are a proud German you generally do not express that by flying the national flag or singing the national anthem, both of which have been more associated with Germany's far-right parties Mein Gott!! What has happened to this flag to be related to far-right parties?? AFAIK were the liberals the ones that conceived it! BTW, for us the next match is Saudi Arabia. We don't take it as a geopolitical game, but as internal political game against the Regional Nationalists who are so miserable that hate seeing the Spain flag waving and the Spanish team winning. Soccer and Politics not so far after all.

I can't say I pay attention to soccer, but the political implications? This got my Jacksoninian up:
Truth truly is stranger than fiction... "Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"?" ...and good for them, on both counts.

Possibly non-political, but did anyone else see the Confederate flag being waved amidst the sea of red in the Spanish cheering section during the game with Ukraine the other day? Had to back up the Tivo to believe my eyes. WTF? I saw this happen on TV but didn't realize it was an Israeli flag, as the Star of David wasn't visible from that camera angle. I had assumed the guy was waving the flag of whichever pro club he played for. (IIRC Chelsea's main color is a similar shade of blue.) As it happens, Ghana is also the next opponent for Team USA. I presume these Egyptians will be rooting for a draw in that match (which would probably eliminate Ghana and definitely eliminate the U.S.).

The official national anthem of Germany no longer includes the verse that starts "Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles," the original sense of which was corrupted under National Socialism. It now begins, "Unity and Justice and Freedom . . ."

http://futurist.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/03/the_winds_of_wa.html is increasingly likely that we will be able to indice Democratic reform in Iran without warfare. The forces against the Mullahs are just too great in this day and age.

A draw between Ghana and the US means Ghana advances unless the Czechs can manage at least a draw with Italy. A draw would give Ghana 4 points overall, and the Czechs would have only 3 if they lose to Italy (which would then have 7), leaving the US with just 2. A Czech-Italy draw coupled with a US-Ghana draw would leave Italy and the Czechs 1 and 2, respectively, and send Ghana and the US home, all because of the 3rd goal scored by the Czechs against the US. A US win and an Italy win gives the US the chance to play Brazil in the next round. I would never wish a loss on the US, but if the US doesn't advance, I hope Ghana does.

"Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"?" Do you understand now why it is so hard to write an alternate history novel?
#11 from Colt at 7:15 pm on Jun 21, 2006
Yehudit, Slight error - Pantsil plays for an Israeli team (Hapoel Tel Aviv), not the Israeli team. Colt, someone else caught that when I posted this on Kesher Talk, but I forgot to change it when I posted it here. Thanks! A win by Ghana ends the US run, and Ching can go back early to the Dyanmo to get them back on track to an MLS title. Just to confirm what ricg was saying. The First (Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles) Verse was abandoned in favour of the Third (Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit) Verse in the 1950s. Spoilsports.
#15 from J Aguilar at 8:50 pm on Jun 21, 2006
PD Shaw (#2) What I saw from that match makes me think a tie was fair. Playing against Italy is always hard and often bloody, but Americans fought, well, played, bravely. ricg (#6) The official national anthem of Germany no longer includes the verse that starts "Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles," I thought the same, but it seems that it is still sung from the first verse in all but official occasions ( Bei staatlichen Veranstaltungen soll die dritte Strophe gesungen werden. ) Yehudit is right. Good. The original notion is awesome, and deserves to be preserved/resuscitated, whereas the new version sounds like... well, not so good.

"The 2006 World Cup was rife with political symbolism..." "Was"? It's not even half over yet! I was just quoting the article, I personally have no idea which verses Germans sing.

Bo is pretty revealing. THAT is the "heart and soul" of the Democratic Party. Note the obligatory "the JEWSSSSSS!!!!!!" ranting etc. How did that Party degenerate / devolve from Harry Truman bucking all the Democratic Party advisors to recognize Israel because it was the right thing to do ... to guys like Bo? Can Dems root for Team USA? Israel? Please, send soccer home. It's Euro-boring and if you value "diversity" you'll be happy the US mostly could not care a whit about a bunch of guys in shorts chasing a ball, with intermittent riots and hooligans. I mean what's more important, World Cup or that Shaq has another World Championship?
#22 from J Aguilar at 9:09 am on Jun 22, 2006
Mein Gott (again), Bo! Just tell you that your conspiracy theory falls quite short and it lacks imagination. It is technically incongruent and it covers up facts that are against it, such as the assassination of Massoud by the Talibans on September 9th, 2001. If you want to enjoy a real conspiracy, something that even Hollywood script writers cannot conceive, I invite you to come to Spain. Oh, I forgot to tell you, the bad guys are from the left. Any problem with it?
#23 from SEND SPAIN HOME at 7:46 am on Jun 24, 2006
Yes,i did see that confederate flag at the spain game,i too was in shock, after doing some research it appears the spianards are very racist people, the coach is an open racist and was caught calling HENRY from France a BLACK SH*T,there has also been mention of Raul from Spain using facist gestures,Spain should not be allowed to play in the world cup.In a twist of fate it turns out France will be playing spain in a knock out game,Henry will go up against the same coach that was racist against him.I hope France beats Spain really bad and send those dirty nasty Spianards,FANS COACHES AND PLAYERS BACK TO SPAIN. Please correct your mistake. The Independent is totally wrong. Compared to the British media's attitude to Germany, the German papers are not Anti-American at all. You write: "Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"?" Nobody is singing that! Due to Nazi misuse of that verse, nobody is singing it anymore. Only other verses of the national anthem are sung. Thanks for setting us straight on that, Atlanticist. Unfortunately, the Instapundit picked up on that phrase and now it's gone out across the blogosphere. If I could call it back, I would. Serves me right for relying on the Independent, for anything. PS I like your blog, I'm going to put you on my blogroll. Thanks Yehudit, for going to add us on your blogroll. We already have Winds of Change on ours. I have not found that phrase on Instapundit. Did he delete it or did you mean another blog? Instapundit linked to this post by quoting the line about: "Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"?" Thanks! Now I found it. He wrote: "BAD NEWS FOR AHMADINEJAD AT THE WORLD CUP: "Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing Deutschland über alles?" No, but I wouldn't want to get on their bad side..." What's the last sentence supposed to mean? You wrote in your post: "Did you ever think you'd see the same people waving Israeli flags and singing "Deutschland über alles"?" What's the surprise? Why wouldn't we wave Israeli flags? You wrote in your comment: "If I could call it back, I would." Well, you can! You could update your post and write a correction. You could email Glenn about the mistake he made. That would be the right thing to do, because you are responsible for spreading the wrong information from the Independent. I hate the spread of stereotypes. It makes me said to see blogs that I like (Instapundit and Winds of Change) to spread prejudices, stereotypes, anti-German misinformation or however you want to call it. Yehudit, I am going to write a post in a couple of hours. I would appreciate it, if you could email Glenn about this post. Please wait till I have it online. Don't worry, I will be nice and fair. I'll write a post linking to your comment here or to whatever you write on your blog, and I'll try to get Glenn's attention, and whatever else I can do. Thank you! That is very kind of you. I have send you a draft at admin-at-keshertalk-dot-com Please let me know what you think. Will the average American ever know his enemies when he even doesn't know his allies? The German Foreign Minister doesn't have to admit 'thousands of mistakes' in Iraq. It wasn't Germany that made the USA dependent on Iran's peaceful ambitions as never before - one snap from Teheran and Iraq is burning. It was the Bush administration alone that ran the USA into this most bizarre situation - will America's right wing kindergarten sissies ever realize this? We are not the directors of Operation Iraqi Slapstick! =D To make one point clear: Being German, I never ever heard anyone sing "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" to the tune of our national anthem - except for people showing their support of extremely right-wing political groups. The third verse, "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" is always sung, whether in official or non-official settings. If anyone in a german stadium (except some rightwing-weirdos) openly had sung the "Über alles"-Verse, the papers and news would be full of it, because that would be a big scandal for weeks. This verse you will not hear from anyone in Germany other than some NeoNazis. I didn't saw anything mentioned in the news. So this did not happen.
