- Al Qaeda in Iraq suffered a tough weekend as Coalition and Iraqi forces killed or captured a dozen of its senior leaders, including deputy commander Hamed Jumaa Farid al-Saeedi. The Iraqi government claimed the actions dealt a fatal blow to al Qaeda in Iraq, although there is little knowledge about just how large a part al Qaeda in Iraq plays in the current violence.
- Negotiations over the transfer of responsibility for Iraqi security to the Iraqi military deadlocked on Sunday as the Iraqi government held out for greater control over security operations than the U.S. is currently willing to give up.

REPORTS FROM THE FIELD
- Iraqi authorities have agreed to a truce with a Shiite militia and calm has been restored in the town of Diwaniyah after a battle which left at least 28 people dead.
- Jamaat Jund al-Sahaba, a Sunni Muslim group claimed responsibility for attacks that killed more than 50 Shiites in Baghdad on Sunday.
- Thirteen Indian and Pakistani pilgrims were kidnapped and murdered en route to the Shiite holy city of Karbala.
RECONSTRUCTION & THE ECONOMY
- Iraqi Banks are threatened by bankruptcy as some depositors hint at withdrawals of large sums.
- Iraq's government hopes its plans to attract investments and create jobs can stem a descent into civil war and says foreign leaders should back a U.N. economic package or face a disaster for the entire Middle East.
- Iran Ministry of Industry and Mine's international affairs chief announced that in the case Iranian and Iraqi officials reached agreement and a one billion dollar credit was allocated to industrial projects in Iraq, Iran would construct a cement industrial unit in Iraq.
- Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit stated the Iraqi government has agreed to supply Jordan with 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude at 'preferential prices'.
- Syria's state gain agency has sold 7,000 tonnes of soft wheat to Iraq.
IRAQI POLITICS
- Kurdish leaders are threatening to secede for Iraq over the Iraqi government's requirement that only the Iraqi national flag fly over government buildings.

- The Kuwaiti government made two complaints to Iraq about border violations and attacks on Kuwaiti border police.

- Four soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division could face the death penalty on charges of premeditated murder of three Iraqi detainees.
- U.S. casualties in Iraq surpassed the death toll of the 9/11 attacks over the weekend.
