Meanwhile the soldier, a fine bloke by all accounts, is in police custody as well - for his own protection.
Note well the intended victim is Muslim. The killers would have annopunced that any Muslim bearing arms for the infidel British government was a traitor to Islam and deserved to die.
This was to be a crime of intimidation against British Muslims that they had better fall in line with the jihadists, or minimally not hinder them, or else.
And I'm sure the message has been received. Loud and clear.
Joe, I have to say that your point about Israel and Jews escapes me. Are you saying that some people argue that blood-thirsty killers such as these are the result of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Or are you saying that all Arab and/or Muslim grievences over the percieved injustices to the Palestinians are somehow connected to or inplicated in such barbarism by a tiny fraction of Muslims.

No Mark -- the point is that most Muslims are bloody and barbaric (excuses being made again by local Muslims) with the rest complicit out of agreement or fear.
Either way the tiny minority are those who believe in the fundamental values of the West. Such as the Muslim soldier who was the target.
THAT was the whole POINT. That Muslims themselves were determined to barbarically torture and kill a Muslim who believed in the West to make it clear that Muslims as a group would not accept that. By a clear and unmistakable message: torture and death.
There are no marches to protest the plot, no urgings by Community Leaders to turn in anyone connected, not a single pledge by young men to root out these monsters themselves. Because Muslims by and large are the monsters, or out of fear or assent allow them to operate.
The only natural conclusion from this is that Muslims cannot co-exist with Western values or westerners in the West.

Mark (#3) - Yes, that's exactly what many argue, on both counts. And of course, it's utter rubbish.
These people need no reason for such acts other beyond their faith's inbuilt imperialism, theocratic fusion, and subhuman status for non-believers - and haven't for a millennium. Some stories throw this into clearer light.
This problem has a solution, and it's one that could be applied immediately if the Government had the guts.
Apply the law. Existing law. Against incitement to murder, procuring kidnap, conspiracy to murder and kidnap, incitement to religious and racial hatred...
Why aren't rabble-rousing clerics in jail or deported? Why isn't the bookshop that had a part in this shut down, the contents confiscated and the proprietor in jail? Why aren't the mosques that are the centre of this sort of behaviour shut down, boarded up and the people in charge in jail or deported?
Freedom of speech does NOT include the right to make speeches or publish pamphlets inciting a group of people to commit murder, sedition and treason. It doesn't in Britain or anywhere else.
A similar set of actions by the BNP or other right-wing group would have the perps in jail so fast their feet wouldn't touch the ground.
Another good first step would be to require that permanent immigrants to Britain pass a test in English, and along with that to remove all the multilingual notices in assorted public places.
The most worrying aspect of this is the way it's been greeted by the local Muslim community, who view it as a conspiracy - check out my latest post on the issue on my blog.

I don't know anything about Ann Coulter, but quite a few people express the view that the government of (for example) Iran ought to be overthrown. Mostly they are not stupid enough to say it in Iran, though.
In addition to this, Britain has a perfectly good mechanism, within the law, to overthrow a government. It's called an election.
To those who want Sharia; form a party, field candidates, contest an election, see how far you get. Don't be surprised, however, if when you do some attention gets paid as to whether those who would be doing the campaigning have any right to be in the country at all. I suspect not.
Don't be surprised, either, if some of your religious practices which are already against the law get some more attention, too. Honour killings, halal slaughter, rape of "infidel" women, racist attacks against whites and Jews, and of course some of the abuses to do with various State handouts. This is not an exhaustive list.
Moslems in Britain, and a lot of places too, are getting away with things nobody else would have a prayer of getting away with. Time it stopped.
