Anti-Americanism at Ground Zero

| 5 Comments | 1 TrackBack

Liberals trying to turn the 9/11 site into an anti-American billboard? Sure looks like it. Kerry voter Jeff Jarvis has the details on a story that's getting airplay in New York, but not enough in the rest of the country.

Standard Issue vs What We Take from No Pundit Intended
Excerpt: Andrew Olmsted, who I work with on the weekly Iraq Brief at Winds of Change points to an article by Art Thomason of the Arizona Republic regarding a Dad who "had to pay" out of pocket for his son's body armor.

A politically correct tourist attraction? Sounds like a dangerous confluence of money interests and liberal activism.

Though I wish people were also upset that the Andersonville Prison was made into a memorial for all prisoners of war (WWII, Vietnam, etc.), instead of just a museum for the prison.

Jarvis' previous post about the IFC:

I smelled something bad there when The Times -- in a review of the plans filled with the writer's own political agenda -- revealed that a picture of Iraqis holding up their purple fingers of freedom -- a picture worth well more than a thousand words about freedom and democracy -- was taken out of the presentation.

Images of Jim Crow and lynching will be included, though.

Including somebody like Eric Foner on the board of advisors is enough to veto the project, IMO. Other advisors include Fareed Zakaria, the editor of Newsweek International. I guess visitors can look forward to pictures of American flags in garbage cans.

There's also the usual assortment of unemployed Democrats: Bob Kerrey, Kennedy's ghost writer Ted Sorensen, Harris Wofford, and so on. These are the people who will be providing "balance" to the likes of Eric Foner.

The advisory board also includes Ann-Marie Slaughter, who helped the freedom-loving Sandinistas sue the US in the World Court. There are also some more tepid people - Overview of the advisory board.

For the record, my local news showed a clip of the protest and comments on the issue. Surprised me.

Im not sure any museum belongs at ground zero.

That said, whereever one DOES put a "freedom center" whatever that is, why would one exclude slavery? Why would including that be anti-American? Im an American, Im proud of the abolitionists, etc. The Jefferson memorial as well as the Lincoln include references to slavery, ones which bring tears to my eyes.

Ive been to Andersonville, and found it moving. Theres plenty of detail about what happened there, the additional material on POWs in general doesnt detract from that (IIRC - its been awhile)

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
