Over at Bill Quick's DailyPundit, he links to a very clear and simple explanation of Charter Schools and the current education system: what are Charter schools, why the current public school system has failure built in, and why Charter schools are expected to help:
"It is a rare monopoly that voluntarily gives up the advantages of monopolistic control for the rigours of competitive free markets. Charter schools, vouchers, tax-credits for corporate-funded scholarships, home schooling – these all introduce market-based competition into the educational arena by providing choice to parents whose socio-economic status had previously ensured their children were trapped in undesirable or failing public schools. The threat these competitive innovations represent to “business as usual” among the various educational unions and bureaucracies is genuine and they have responded quite rationally with fear and defensive attacks...."
This is followed by a pretty good discussion in the comments section (Hat Tip: reader Max Jenson) May 1-7, 2005 is apparently National Charter Schools Week in the USA.

I am interested in starting a group regarding the charter school experience. I am presently a doctoral student. I have a charter school group on the gmail site at www.gmail.com. If you are interested in putting in your two cents, I am interested.
