Looks like Conspiracy and Truth Week here at Winds of Change.NET. From Armed Liberal's Unsettling Dinner and its comments section, to the follow-up covering conspiracy theories generally, to Celeste's post on the one about the CIA and crack cocaine in L.A. That one wasn't funny, but the Jewish Sex Gum conspiracy meme was.

On the side of truth and consequences, entries include Trent's piece about SARS in China and the costs of organized lying, Laughing Wolf's follow-up on CNN and honesty in the media, and Armed Liberal's post about the link underlying them all. Meanwhile, Sina Motallebi is arrested in Iran, where the truth is a conspiracy as far as the government is concerned.

M. Simon would say his police officer interview and today's Guest Blog piece about the War on Drugs debunk their own set of myths; we'll let you make up your own minds.

Just when we thought it was all over, the real bomb drops yesterday: Aziz Poonawalla's slippery defense of his "Anti-Arab genetic bioweapons" claim, aimed at the Israelis without serious evidence (some might say: in the face of impossibility) and fitting patterns of organized hatred straight out of Medieval times, was a depressing episode. All the more depressing in that it seemed to fit so well into the patterns we've been discussing.

Intelligent people can say of believe foolish things, and it's worth engaging people you respect if the belief in question has serious implications. This one did... and the fallout is serious too.

Speculation about motives is a poor approach, but argument style and structure are legitimate grounds for critique. Beyond my issues with the truth of his claims, Aziz' very mode of argument is deeply dishonest.

I won't tolerate a debating style where any accusation can be made, however outrageous, with no serious evidence but with the expectation that it will be taken seriously and treated as a topic for moral debate (even condemnation, whic Aziz did ask for) as if it were true. Then the next invented charge is brought out, of course, and the pattern continues in this vein. That's the game. By accepting those terms, one makes the charges themselves seem respectable and true... and they're neither.

I won't play that game. And I don't respect or trust people who invite me to do so.

Fittingly, I'll give Armed Liberal the last word here:

"If someone can show me that any country - the U.S., Israel, Iraq, or whoever - is seriously researching or planning for development or deployment of a WMG [weapon of mass genocide], then we have something to talk about.

Otherwise it is a racist fantasy - both from the POV of those who would consider it and deliver their fantasy of a racially-pure world, and from the point of view of those who use the possibility of it as a rhetorical weapon to smear a race.

It's damn hard to respond to that. And my interest in particpating in a racist discussion - on either side - is pretty low."

UPDATE: Porphyrogenitus says yesterday wasn't the first time Aziz has used this approach. That said, if folks are considering emailing Aziz to express their displeasure, please don't. It serves no-one; at best, it will waste your time.

Sometimes it's interesting to float an idea out just to see the response it draws. I remeber as a teenager a tremendous number of people I thought had at least average inteligence, and they didn't believe that the US really had landed a man on the moon. It was just shot in Hollywood on a movie set and broadcast over television. Even now when I mention that in a group someone will get serious and ask "and you think that isn't what happened?"

I know what you're talking about. I also know that others have apparently had very constructive debates with Aziz - especially relative to others on that side of the ideological spectrum. I won't speak for them. But I've found this to be true. Last summer I had some e-mail exchanges with Aziz which were, or seemed at first to be, constructive give and take debates. But a pattern soon developed that I foundd very underhanded on his part, called him on to no effect, resulting in my terminating contact with him.

I'm not going to go into details - it was on a different topic (the endpoint came down to his invoking of authorities inviting me to opine on them and then dismissing my arguments out of hand because I lacked the stature of those authorities - who, it should be pointed out, eventually came around to the position I was supporting in any event - which I found to be a dishonest method, since he had initiated the debate between us and then was dismissive of my opinion in this fashion. If he didn't want it, fine, but it seemed to be a bait-and-switch, heads-I-win-tails-you-lose sort of tactic). But I know what you mean, because the pattern also involved the sort of thing you identified in this case:

He would repeatedly bring out speculation and demand that they be disproven, then move on to another speculative scenario as if nothing happened, to the point that the entire thing eventually devolved into circularity (with old assertions eventually being re-raised in a way that ignored all the points that had been made in counter-argument in previous mails, expecting them to be dealt with again - without aknowleding in the least the previous discussion on those points had ever happened). But it was the appeal to authority in a manner that mooted out the substance of any argument I might raise that led me to terminate things - there was no point in going on given he had revealed a dismissive attitude which made me wonder why he had initiated the discussion in the first place.

The whole thing did re-enforce my belief in frustration-agression theory, though.

{sarcastic rant portion of this diatribe begins here} These Israeli Anti-Arab Bio-Weapons Aziz has discovered, though, will probably leave the blood of the Arabs untainted, so the invidious Jews can use it in their pastries for Purim. {/sarcastic rant} {conclude diatribe}.

There was an interesting article (I may even have seen the link here) about a month ago on the fact that Arab armies don't fight well because commanders control information and dole it out to keep their authority, and the troops are so submissive to authority figures anyway.

Contrast to our army, where responsibility and decision-making devolves down as far to the rank and file as possible. (which I assume is a result of the same massive changes in decision-making process brought about by the IT revolution in the 80s that heavily influenced corporate organizations.)

Anyway I wonder if Aziz' reverence for authority for its own sake comes from this mindset. It seems he expected you to give way once he noted that these were "authorities"! (regardless of the veracity of the content) and then was dismayed when you did not, couldn't fit your response into his worldview, so just went on to the next topic.

On the "Jewish Sex Gum" thread, I posted some links which cite original sources about this rumor. It and other rumors about evil Jewish scientists nefarious plots have been floating around in the Arab world for many years. When you read some of these and note how ubiquitous they are, you can see why Aziz could be credulous.

However Americans are not immune. I remember all the conspiracy theories floating around the Repub right wing (esp. through Limbaugh) about Hillary Clinton having Vincent Foster killed to cover up their affair, and similar dreck. I have been more sympathetic to the Clintons than I might otherwise have been, reasoning that I don't want to be associated with the type of people out to get the Clintons in any way.

I have similar thoughts about the antiwar movement, although in addition to the rampant conspiracy-mongering they haven't made any convincing arguments either. But the conspiracy-mongering taints everything else they say.

I meant to say: "I don't want to be associated with the type of people propagating ridiculous rumors in order to get the Clintons." If someone's method smells bad, it influences what I think of the content of the message.

I had the exact same experience w/Aziz last year that Porphyrogenitus had. Only I couldn't explain it nearly as well as he did. I ended up blocking Aziz from my account.

the Booker Prize. Other members of the panel are John Sutherland, Natasha
Walter, Shena Mckay and Boyd Tonking. There were several factors other than
literary excellence that influenced the selection for the prize wrote Paul
Bailey, a noted literary critic, recently. He cited the examples of Salman
Rushdie and Vikram Seth who, despite their lack of literary talent, were awarded

This year's prize was awarded to the South African writer, J.M Coetzee. The
Egyptian writer Ahdaf Soueif was the most deserving among the final list of the
writers. The judges considered her novel, 'The Map of Love', a rare piece of
literary excellence, according to Bailey. Yet she was denied the prize.
Analyzing the reasons for her disqualification, Prof. Sutherland considers that
her hostile sentiments toward the Zionist movement could have prompted Kaufmann
to adopt a unfavorable stand against her. Kaufmann's past as a zealous Jewish
activist underpins this suspicion. He was born and brought up among Jewish
zealots. After completing his education at Leeds, he entered politics. He was
elected a Labor MP in 1970. Prime Minister Harold Wilson, noted for his Zionist
tilt, included him among his confidants. Spotting his talent combined with his
dedication to the Zionist movement, Wilson allowed Kaufmann to prepare his
speeches on special occasions. During the Six-Day War, Kaufmann carried secret
letters between the Prime Minister's office and Israel's ambassador Aharon
Remez. This act, in fact, amounted to espionage and treason against Britain.
Kaufmann's memoirs also shed light on the biased British stand toward Israel in
1967 war. Kaufmann criticized the neutral stand taken by Edward Heath's
Conservative government in the 1973 Middle East war. He also expressed his
displeasure over the government's ban on the sale of weapons to Israel,
considering it the aggressor. The then Conservative government also denied
American planes carrying weapons to Israel permission to land or refuel in
British airports. Kaufmann also accused Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas Home
of anti-Semitism because of his bold stand in the General Assembly on this
issue. Later Kaufmann paid a visit to Israel in order to express his sympathy
and apology for the matter. Menahem Begin, the veteran terrorist leader, wanted
to meet Kaufmann in particular and express his personal gratitude to Kaufmann
for the services offered by him to Israel, Kaufmann's 'true motherland,' by
committing treason against Britain, his native country.
On Kaufmann's becoming the shadow foreign secretary for Labor in 1987, the Arabs
expressed their deep concern over the matter. He did not want to lose his post
because of the displeasure of the Arabs. Therefore Kaufmann began to appear as a
supporter of Palestinian self-determination. His attitude toward the Zionist
movement, however, did not undergo any change. He called Zionism a movement for
cultural liberation.
