Dan's Winds of War: 2003-12-18

| No Comments | 1 TrackBack
Welcome! Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the global War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused every Monday & Thursday. In addition, we also have our in-depth Iraq Report. Today's briefings are brought to you by Dan Darling of Regnum Crucis. TOP TOPICS * Saudi authorities are scheduled to release 300 terrorist suspects out of the 900 detained to date (not sure if this counts the hundreds who were killed when the al-Hair prison burnt down), apparently at the behest of Sheikh Mohsin al-Awaji, who appears to be in charge of negotiation between the royal family and al-Qaeda. While it is possible that those detained were simply innocent bystanders picked up at random by Saudi authorities, I somehow wouldn't bet on it ... * US authorities are claiming reports of credible threats to locations in Italy and Saudi Arabia. In most cases, these types of threats aren't commented on much, but the last two reports of threats against Saudi installations have panned out. * The GIA, which has been responsible for many of the 150,000 killed during the Algerian civil war, recently killed 2 policemen in Medea. Normally, this wouldn't be very significant, except for one point - the infamous GIA is down to just 30 members following the capture of their leader Rashid Abu Tourab last month. Other Topics Today Include: Iran Reports; USA Homeland Security Briefing; bin Laden's flight to Peshawar after Tora Bora; a run-down of the assassination attempt on Musharraf and the likely suspects; more violence in Kashmir; al-Qaeda activity in Japan and South Korea; Chechen attacks on Dagestan; new Taliban videotape; and Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf denies Saddam Hussein's capture.
IRAN REPORTS * Iranian officials are planning to upgrade their Shihab-3 missile to achieve a longer range. * Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is pleased with the capture of Saddam Hussein - though he would evidently prefer that Bush and Sharon join him behind bars. * Hasan Rowhani, the powerful head of Iran's National Security Council, is promising that Iran will punish any country that supports the US in bringing the issue of the nation's nuclear program to the UN Security Council. This comes as Vice President Gholam Reza Aghazadeh is telling reporters that Iran will open up its nuclear weapons sites to IAEA inspectors. * Geostrategy Direct is reporting that Osama bin Laden and his lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahiri have entered Iran and are being harbored by members of the IRGC. USA HOMELAND SECURITY BRIEFING * The issue of Grover Norquist's ties to radical Islamists has come up before on Winds of Change, but now it appears that Norquist is only part of a larger puzzle involving the Safa Group that I first noted back in October. THE WIDER WAR * The Pakistani Daily Times is reporting that bin Laden fled to the city of Peshawar following the bombing of Tora Bora. I'm not sure what to make of this, but it does jive with reports at the time that bin Laden fled to home of Jamaat Ulema-e-Islami leader Fazlur Rehman after Tora Bora. * The assassination attempt on the life of General Musharraf used five bombs, though the dictator may have been saved through the use of a radio jamming device. So far, Pakistani authorities have arrested 40 and the main suspects are said to be al-Qaeda or its local flavor, the Harkat ul-Mujahideen al-Aalmi, both of which were involved in the bombing of the US consulate in Karachi a year earlier. * Yet more violence has rocked Kashmir despite the tentative cease-fire between India and Pakistan. * Bangladesh is becoming a weak link in the War on Terror, with the al-Qaeda affiliate Islami Oikya Jote serving as a member of the ruling coalition. * Al-Qaeda leader Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj's recent threats against Japan have apparently not gone unnoticed, as two articles from the Japan Times appear to indicate - nor is Japan the only place in East Asia that seems to have caught the terror network's interest. * Chechen terrorists rebels have crossed into Dagestan and attacked the town of Shauri, killing 3 and taking 30-40 hostages. In addition, a number of Chechen and Arab fighters have also attacked Galati, taking 8 additional hostages. * The Taliban have released a propaganda videotape in apparent collusion with unemployed potenate Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. * We try to end on a lighter note if possible. The venerable Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, variously known as Baghdad Bob and Comical Ali, has denied the capture of Saddam Hussein and has no doubt announced that US soldiers are committing suicide on the gates of Los Angeles ...

Winds of War and Iraq from Hundredth Monkey
Excerpt: There has been a lot going on besides the arrest of Saddam. But I couldn't do as good of a job posting on it all as Dan Darling over at Winds of Change, with his Iraq report, war on terror...

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
