Dan's Winds of War: 203-05-05

by Joe Katzman at May 5, 2003 5:12 PM

MAY 5/03: Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused. If you find something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip hyperlink to today's "Winds of War". Welcome!

Today's "Winds of War" is brought to you by Guest Blogger Dan Darling. Dan's regular blog is Regnum Crucis. What do you think? Use the Comments section!

TO IRAQ...

On the Battlefield...

  • Ever wonder what happened to the "feared" Republican Guard? Time Magazine offers a bit of an answer, but suffice it to say that these guys aren't coming back for a fight anytime soon.

  • JK: Phil Carter's Intel Dump has links to the restrospective accounts of several embedded reporters. They're candid, and some convey stories they weren't allowed to tell at the time. They also shed additional light on Blake Powers' thesis about embeds changing the "undeclared war" between reporters and the U.S. military.

    Inside Iraq

  • Which "cards" have we captured so far? The CENTCOM list. And the visual version of "Ba'ath Poker."

  • There was a notable pro-US demonstration today in Baghdad to thank our troops for freeing their country.

  • While tensions remain high in the city of Fallujah as US forces seek to locate those responsible for the Thursday's grenade attack.

  • The infamous al-Tuwaitha nuclear facility was looted by either opportunists, terrorists, or idiots.

  • The troops are still there. So is the Winds of Change.NET consolidated directory of ways you can support the troops. American, British and Australian. Anyone out there with more information, incl. the Poles and Czechs? [updated April 1, 2003]

    AND BEYOND...

  • Special Report: notes the role al-Qaeda's U.K. group is playing in the conflict with Israel.

  • Pakistan has arrested two Egyptian al-Qaeda operatives. This brings the total to 10 Pakistani al-Qaeda busted ever since the capture of Tawfiq Attash Khallad, though Khallad claims that there are 50 more al-Qaeda operatives hiding in Karachi, where they're likely using the local Lashkar-e-Jhangvi as hired muscle.

  • The infamous al-Qaeda website al-Neda has once again been relocated, this time as an obscure image directory on the website of a remodeling company.

  • Despite Powell's claims that Syria is closing the offices of terrorist organizations, it would seem that the Syrian claims were little more than lip service from Bashar al-Assad and his Baathist cronies, as the organizations in question continue to operate with impunity in Damascus.

  • We try to close on a lighter note if possible. "The Real Hussein" is a parody of Eminem's "Real Slim Shady." Will the real Hussein please stand up? Please stand up? Please stand up? - Check me while I Babylon...Other Winds of War candidates will be running their own editions in the days to come, and there's still time to apply for a slot of your own. Meanwhile, the Comments section is designed for feedback - use it!

Joe, Dan's post exposing the Qaida London connection is an excellent first post.

Pardon the effusion, but Dan is a great choice for a guest blogger.

Dan, I can't tell it's not Joe. It's seamless. Great job.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

    *This* puts text in bold.

    _This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
