Happy Birthday, Eh!

by Joe Katzman at July 1, 2003 11:59 PM

Yes, it's Canada's 136th birthday today. There are many Canadian icons out there, from Bob & Doug MacKenzie to Terry Fox. So, what is Canada all about? Personally, I know no better summation than the great "I Am Canadian" beer commercial, which says it all and says it well.

For advanced Canadian studies, you should also watch this hilarious parody video "I Am Not A Canadian," starring a guy with a bad French accent talking about what Quebec means to him.

Finally, we reprise last year's Canada Day feature, and an important one for you Americans too in about 3 days: hangover avoidance & cure information. You can thank me later. Or thank Captain Scarlet, who leaves his own cure in our Comments section.

UPDATE: Colby Cosh lists Winds of Change.NET as the #1 Canadian blog, just ahead of William Gibson. Well, that's an unexpected Canada Day present...

My name is Joe, and I Am....

Another Birthday? from Bored on the Bus
Excerpt: This time, I don't know where to send the card. Apparently today is Canada Day (or rather it was Canada Day given that it is nearly over from my perspective)....

Happy Bday, eh. from Right On! Blog
Excerpt: Despite being ruled by a Crouton, we've made it another year. Well, maybe next year I'll fly a flag...my father in law only counted two on his walk yesterday in the 'hood. Appropriately, tax freedom day occurred just a few days ago in Ontario. ...

yeah.. Joe Canada got famous and moved to America to pursue a real career. very embarrassing, eh?

#2 from Captain Scarlet at 6:02 am on Jul 01, 2003

oh yeah.. and for a sure fire hangover cure.. boil bean sprouts and chopped scallions in water and drink up. the bean sprouts have a natural pain reliever in them and the water and onions help clear out your system. works for me everytime. picked that up while i lived in asia too.

#3 from Joe Katzman at 6:57 am on Jul 01, 2003

Embarassing? Why? That's what Canadians do. It's tradition.

#4 from Laughing Wolf at 3:54 pm on Jul 01, 2003

Happy Birthday! Keep up all the good traditions. :)

#5 from Merlin at 4:53 pm on Jul 01, 2003

I wish you folks up there a happy birthday. Have a great Canada Day.

BTW, if Joe has the best reasons anyone can come up for being proud to be a Canadian, then you guys have a real inferiority problem. It seems that the only way you can define yourselves is by trying to NOT BE like Americans. That's pitiful.

HB Canada and 'Canadian World Domination' at www.standonguard.com ... "brutal but polite"

#7 from David Govett at 11:50 pm on Jul 01, 2003

Like so many other countries, Canadians brag about not getting drenched while standing under the American roof. Sure, if the U.S. were to assume the "Canadian position" internationally, we might subject to less abuse, but then we would no longer be Americans, but Canadians.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
