Life Imitates Caddyshack

by Joe Katzman at March 25, 2008 6:18 AM

Reuters:

"A war on gophers waged by two Canadian men went awry this weekend when a device used to blast the rodents in their holes sparked a massive grass fire in a rural area near Calgary, Alberta, causing more than C$200,000 ($197,000) in damages...."

I'll consider this an open thread (as a comedy post, figure just as well), but:

What's the plan for things like Previewing comments?

I believe you guys are on Movable Type, correct? What version of Movable Type do you run?

I believe that comment preview can be enabled on recent versions of Movable Type - have you guys tried upgrading?

here is the comment preview on Movable Type

according to a wiki.

Also, I know that sites like Swing State Project, have moved from Movable Type to Soapblox. You guys thought about this?

Here's David in NYC, on moving from MT to Soapblox

And thanks once again for all your help in getting my old blog archives transferred over. I think that's a possible selling point for you - that MT sites (and perhaps others) which move to SoapBlox can keep their archives on the same URL as the new SoapBlox site.

So you keep Winds of Change.

Not to mention, you then get a WYSIWYG editor, and preview, for better commenting styles, and less problems with framesets.

You could even enable 'commenter diaries' or blogging.

Not that I think you will, as then people like me, chris, andrew lazarus, we bumrush the site, since you would need someone full-time to stop us!!

:)!

I've actually noodled on a switch to Drupal to allow for more complex conversations, but just am flat out of bandwidth to do a major rearchitecture. I'll have the vast Winds technical team look at this as an option, tho...

MT 3.3 has its drawbacks - especially what it has done to spam filtering options, and how that interacts with Previews (kills them).

Over at DID, I've found an MT - WordPress migration to be kind of like the Caddyshack-style scenario above. Including a tendency to randomly eat parts of posts long after they're put up.

Soapblox, Drupal, and other systems remain options, but Mark's right re: time limitations for us, and if we get it wrong... Rodenator time, for sure.

#6 from Nortius Maximus at 4:45 am on Mar 27, 2008

For the record, we recently crossed the 100k comments mark on the ol' MT odometer. It keeps on whizzin' wheezin' along...

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
