One of the Ones Who Let Me Vote

Sgt. Joe Bozik.

He's in Walter Reed right now. Blackfive has some background and links on how you can help him by helping his family.

I was going to take someone out to lunch today - I sent $25 over instead. I can stand to miss a meal, and I bet you can too.

So today is election day. I work at an elementary school where "children are our future". While walking in the hallway, i came across a third grade class that was on their way to lunch. So they ask me if i have voted yet, I proudly tell them that I am part of 20 million loud (18-25 year old voters who know their vote makes a difference). Anywho....the teacher goes on to say "Class, who are you voting for?" "KERRY! KERRY" they reply. Now I'm not going to tell you who I voted for, i want to remain unbiased. I asked them why they were voting that way and they said "because the teacher told us". I was pretty upset by this. I just think that the teacher should not be imposing her beliefs on those children. BEing clearly distraught, i went to my principal to let her know how i feel. " It doesn't matter. They're only children." was the response i got. That is my whole point....they are children. Maybe i'm trying to make them think a little too independantly, but i feel they should be able to make their own choices based on a fair comparison of the candidates. This is only the second presidential election i am allowed to vote in (i'm only 22) and the first time i voted who my parents told me to vote for. This time, I made my voice heard so I have every right to complain if i don't like the way things are going in a few years. Voting my opinion gave me that ability. Let me know what you all think. Was it silly for me to get upset?

Dear C.C., I think you were absolutely right to go to the principal over those kids chanting "Kerry! Kerry!". Getting upset is not silly at all.

Kids get their political opinions from their parents until they grow old enough to form their own, and that is as it should be. The teacher should be teaching them how our political system works and how voting works, but she should have stopped there. The unison chanting is way over the top.

That's my $0.02, anyway. Cheers!

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
