Just read 2 Agence France-Presse Reports that hit like a port wine hangover. Get a load of this...
"Defense Minister Paulo Portas said Portugal will not show any preference for European-manufactured military equipment in future procurement, Agence France-Presse reports. And this..."Portugal is not a rich country. When acquiring equipment we must carefully analyze the price, the delivery timetable and the quality of the goods. It does not matter as much if a certain equipment is American or European, what matters is that it is of good quality and it is acquired at the best price," Portas said following an address to European defense officials in Lisbon.
In August, Portugal cancelled an US$34 million order for nine military helicopters from the Eurocopter consortium due to delivery delays.
Portas said Portugal is considering if it will put out another tender for the helicopters or simply go directly to another manufacturer to negotiate a purchase."
Portuguese Defense Minister Paulo Portas told European Union defense officials that the E.U. has little right to criticize U.S. unilateralism in world affairs if Europe continues to spend less than Washington on defense, Agence France-Presse reports.Looks like someone over there is reading Steven Den Beste..."It is not possible for Europe to continue to complain that the U.S. at times treats it as if it were dispensable if Europe continues to disinvest in security," Portas told E.U. defense officials during a speech in Lisbon. "Only those who invest in security have a voice in security matters."
Washington spends just over 3 percent of its GDP on defense, while the 15-member European Union spends about 2 percent on the military.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:
*This* puts text in bold.
_This_ puts text in italics.
bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.
To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
