"Paratrooper of Love", Indeed!!

TG went to get her hair cut and brought home a copy of Penthouse she'd been reading - or claimed to have been reading. There was an article about the military in it, right between the naked Second Life and hentai characters and the "Wow!! He went 30 days without sex!!" article.

"Don't you know this guy?" she asked.

In the Crosshairs - Snipers are vital to battlefield victory. Why did two of them become targets of our own military establishment?

...by Matthew Currier Burden, also known as Matty O'Blackfive.

Sweet!! You go, Matty!!

I bet he thought this could never happen to him... >;->

Joe, as usual, is correct.

And, I never knew how many friends and brothers and former platoon leaders and sergeants actually READ PH.

The traffic about it has been "interesting".

#1 (Joe): I think that's Penthouse FORUM that has those sorts of stories. But it's been decades since I've seen a copy.

#2 (B5): We'll be looking for a "No sh*t, there I was..." retelling of your experiences, here or at your blog. :)

Heh. Save me a copy for when I get home, and can read it without violating General Order #1. :)

Any chance we can get excepts from this? I'm curious what the article is about (and if it's any good).

Debbie and I are both avid readers of Blackfive, and we appreciate the way you are able to expand our horizons. Is the article in the current issue on newstands?

Hooah!

right between the naked Second Life and hentai characters

Ugh. It's a shame goons got banned from that game. Their activity made it less of a wasteland. (Video not work safe and full of holiday cheer.)

Rory, I think your post is right on the edge of irrelevant link spam. Any other Marshal think it's over the line?

Well it was the first thing that popped into my head when AL mentioned Second Life. I wasn't sure that everyone else would be able to picture the Second Life universe, I thought it was amusing, and while the post was about a serious article by Blackfive, AL's post in itself didn't seem %100 serious, and even the serious portion of the post was more congratulatory than anything else.

I don't want to see Winds comment sections plagued in link spam or Joe Mendiola or Foresta. I appreciate what you do. But I don't understand why you posted that comment.

Which is it, is it "right on the edge"? Or is it "over the line"? Does it matter? If you're a Marshall, do you have to ask the other Marshalls? If it irks you that much, just get rid the comment and move on.

Rory, I don't remember you posting here lately. Maybe you have a track record here that predates my involvement.

Without knowing you at all, let me say that we get a lot of posts (sometimes a strafing burst of up to a dozen, all over various threads, in a matter of minutes) from all sorts of people trying to bump their site ratings using WoC's semi-popularity. Gold farmers, deprogrammers, you name it.

Goons and goon activity and their banning and a link didn't seem very germane to anything except goons, etc. Maybe if you're immersed in that aspect of SL it seemed broadly relevant to you.

Here are the WoC comments guidelines.

Rule #2 was at issue. You're here, responding, so you automatically are not our average linkspammer.

Wasn't trying to hassle you, just wasn't sure where you were coming from. I never knew the goons in SL, but from the name and your claim that they were banned they sounded as if they might be griefers. A link to promote griefers didn't seem valuable, and you didn't make any substantive connection in my mind between this subgroup of SL (if they are/were) and the blog entry.

I lacked time to research the matter further, thus my question. shrug Sorry to strike fear. :)

Nah, it's in bounds. Topical, and he flagged it as not work-safe.

I mean, it IS a thread about Penthouse... but no harm, no foul all around.

OK, I've researched it. On the available evidence, I think that an unknown fraction of the goons / SomethingAwfulers and / or fellow travelers cross the line from wittiness to half-wittedness, and those ones' style is not particularly winning.

But the same can be said for an unknown fraction of the rest of the population of Second Life.

re-shrug

I note that Rory thinks they add value. Chacun à son goût, and some may. I have used all the time I intend to budget for the next decade on this, so the matter rests.

Thanks guys, I didn't want to make a big thing of it. As you say, shrug. I just remembered laughing to the point of tears when I saw that video, especially the part with the Lorax.

Nortus, I have indeed been around Winds for awhile, but I'll post about five or six comments a year. I'm not surprised you missed me. I did post more before , though.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
