Quotes of the Now: March 28, 2003

"Embrace the Suck" is still my favourite. Expect this phrase to go mainstream in the culture at large; it's simply too useful not to, and by its very nature crosses multiple lines in the Zeitgeist. Other perspective-indusing whacks upside the head include:

James Taranto, Wall St. Journal Best of the Web:

"Consider the greatest military collapse of modern times, the infamous French fold at the start of World War II. Germany invaded France on May 10, 1940, didn't get to Paris until June 14, and didn't get a French surrender until June 22. Even the French - the French! - were able to hold out for 44 days. If Saddam prolongs the fighting for another 5 weeks, all he will be doing is rising to the level of military competence set by France."
Owwww. And James, make that "his ally, France." Gweilo Diaries also enters the fray, from a different angle:
"Jacques Chirac's friend, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, compared himself to Adolf Hitler: "If that is Hitler, then let me be a Hitler tenfold. Ten times, that is what we stand for." Hmmm . . . if Mugabe is Hitler, that would explain the French inviting him to enter Paris."
Then there's this, from Mark Steyn (Hat Tip to reader Paul Nelson):
"So far, the smart bombs in 'Shock and Awe' have been pretty smart. If they'd killed large numbers or taken out baby-milk factories, Tariq Aziz would have let us know about it. Indeed, given the way Mr Patten's 'smart development assistance' to Yasser Arafat appears to have wound up funding the intifada, America's smart bombs now cause fewer deaths than the EU development budget."
Cutting, but accurate.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
