Thailand and The Jihadis' New Map

Winds has begun to pay more attention to Thailand, where almost 800 people have been killed by Islamofascist terorrists over the past 2 years. Now Nitin Pai of the Acorn notes something interesting:

"Karachi's reputation as a training camp of international terrorists has been revealed: not only have the Indonesian bombers been facilitated here, but also hundreds of Pattanis of Thailand. The future map of Thailand was said to have been decided at Multan Road in Lahore by the jihadi leaders..."

"The future map of Thailand..." Interesting phrase, that; and Karachi and Lahore are cities in Pakistan. The same country that has emerged as a locus around London's 7/7 attack and the recent attack in Ayodhya, India. We've been covering Pakistan's divided loyalties in the War on Terror for quite some time now - but it's nice to throw in a reminder every now and again, and note that state sponsorship & coddling of these groups matters.

UPDATE: Belmont Club expands on a link contributed in our comments by Liberalhawk in Think Globally, Act Locally, which covers some of the local dimensions of these issues.

it is only a matter of time before the "war on terror" extends into pakistan

The future map of Thailand would remove the added-on southern peninsula, formerly part of Indonesia. East Timor, similarly, was removed from the larger body, and has been brought into independence without further violence since about 1987. (This is not a value judgement.)

the war on terror has been fought in Pakistan since 9/11/2001. From the streets of Lahore to the mountains of NWFP. Its a multifaceted war, including military force, LE, political maneuvering, cultural change, slow purging of state institutions, etc. A BALANCED presentation of whats going on their, one that neither ignores what Perv has failed to do, NOR ignores the real constraints on what Perv CAN do, would be appreciated.

Speaking of Thailand, they're about to put into place a state of emergency for dealing with the situation. I'm not sure what to think about that yet. I'm generally dubious about such things -- the constant spectre of Chechnya enters my mind. The argument is being made that the government can combat them under current law (and in fact, the state of emergency may be extraconstitutional) and that the government just isn't doing it. I withold judgement on their motives for now, but I wouldn't put it past them to go for an opportunist power grab in the name of fighting terrorism, when they could do so just as easily.

Liberalhawk... and I believe you'll find all of that in our archives link, plus more. Hence, too, my use of the term "divided loyalties."

The CS Monitor has an interesting piece on Thailand.

this is why w is building the us-india alliance.

i have been blogging on this for months. india is our wedge against pakiland and chinistan.

for true.

china helped the pakis get their nukes. and they might be helping binladen, too. part of their stealth strategy to topple the usa and rule the world.

for true.

we have been surrounding the bad players for the last few years. we now have iran and pakistan and syria completely surrounded. now we will tighten the NOOSE.

pakistan and saudi arabia must be carfefully played. they are complex/multipolar states which makes them tough to handle.

so we gotta go slow - tighten the noose slowly. but surely.

don't call me shirley.

for true.

btw: the thais have NOTHING to do with bush or israel.

someone should tell that to RED KEN.

Thailand is the world's second biggest story this week, behind the US Supreme Court. But do a Google News search on "Thailand AND emergency" to see what I mean.

>>East Timor, similarly, was removed from the larger body, and has been brought into independence without further violence since about 1987.

East Timor gained independence in 1999, and considerable violence was involved, almost entirely on the side of the Indonesian Government and its puppet paramilitaries.

Oh, come on you know Ken will claim that Thailand providing some troops after the war was the reason for the terror attacks in Thailand.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
