Eric Olsen of Blogcritics.org offers his list of "The 10 Best Rock Bands Ever" in this MSNBC article, along with a well-researched bio entry justifying each choice. Here's the discussion thread if you wish to praise or throw abuse at his choices.
My big quibbles: Led Zeppelin should have been higher than #6 - and if we're talking about bands that changed Rock N' Roll, Nirvana has to be there.
NOTE FOR COMMENTERS: This blog's anti-spam defenses include software that forces comments made on old posts like this into moderation before they can appear on site. Your post will be received, it just won't go up until I get my email and approve it. Which I do, as you can see. I'l add that we believe in free speech, so even if you vote for KC and the Sunshine Band, I'll still approve you. I just won't respect you. For those about to rock, we salute you! (and see our post re: the REAL School of Rock).

i agree with most of the list. I never really got into U2. I spent the mid to late 80s deeply into rap so i missed the entire Bono/Edge thing. I think Sly and the Family Stone at the end was a sop to the multiculti crowd. The real question is how did they miss The Who? Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia are three of the most amazing albums in the history of rock. They created the Rock Opera genre. (JC Superstar was so huge it created the overly produced, self-important Andrew Lloyd Weber genre.) BTW, I do like Sly and don't mean to bag on the band but he doesn't belong in the Top 10.
Most of the list is pretty subjective: half of those groups could be taken off (Sly Stone? Give me a break!) and another dozen could compete for a spot. I'd put Led Zeppelin in the top four, even ahead of U2 (for pure greatness and influentialness). David Bowie? No Southern Rock group (Allman Bros?).
Plus, no Jimi Hendrix?
I agree with Mike A. Sly? No way. Bob Marley was great and I love his music, but he ain't a rocker. No WHO is a travesty. Velvet Underground? I would make a strong case for a southern rock band too. And I certainly would put AC-DC and Van Halen up there just as pure rock bands. Geez, now I am thinking about this more, how on earth could anyone who listens to rock seriously consider U2 in the top 10.
I can't take seriously a list of the top ten rock groups ever that doesn't include the Who and Jimi Hendrix and that does include Sly and the Family Stone (a good group but in the top 10 ever?)
What about Black Sabbath? The Clash? U2 has no place there, nor Sly. And no Dylan? His albums and band from the Highway 61/Blonde on Blonde era are amongst the greatest rock albums ever.
The writer specifically notes that he's discarded any solo acts, although how he squares that with Marley on the list is beyond me.
I'm not thrilled with the list, mostly because he has a very unusual definition of "rock". U2 is pop punk, Pink Floyd is prog, the Ramones are punk, the Velvet Underground is irrelevant, Marley and the Wailers are reggae. The Dead are a fucking joke, and ought to have been replaced with the Doors. But then, I'm inclined to think that Rock qua Rock died sometime in 1973.
The Dead going above Zeppelin is just provocation. Zeppelin falling out of the top 3 at all is just absurd. The Dead managed to put out about 50 albums with maybe half a dozen hits. Zeppelin put out basically 8 albums with about 50 legendary songs, most of which were huge hits. Their percentage of hits to misses is unsurpassed, most people dont realize just how many Zeppelin songs they know. I like U2, but not top 5.
The who has to be top five, I would argue that they are top 3 (and since I have never been a big beatles or stones fan, I would rate them #1). Zeppelin easily top 5. Sly and Family stone, Marley. I don't think so. U2? I am not sure about that. WHat about the Kinks. Ramones belong there. Allman Brothers maybe. But any list that has the Who has an honorable mention is just wrong.
"My big quibbles: Led Zeppelin should have been higher than #6 - and if we're talking about bands that changed Rock N' Roll, Nirvana has to be there."
Yes, as the guys that signaled the end of rock and the beginning of a vast musical wasteland that extends to the present day.
I lived through the 80s, Ken - Nirvana ended the wasteland, they didn't start it. A lot of the new stuff they inspired/triggered/etc. is pretty damn great, IMO.
Have to agree w/ Ken. Yeesh... I cringe every time I hear someone praise Nirvana for "changing music". Hair bands were all but done. They had cannibalized themselves into oblivion. It wasn't as if Nirvana came along and slew a great giant. Hair metal was more like a battered and beaten Wile E. Coyote dangling over the Grand Canyon, grasping desperately to the tinyiest weed w/ barely a finger lest he fall to the ravine below. Nirvana just came along and flicked hair metal's finger. Grunge lasted all of about 5 minutes (disco was more durable as was the hair metal period that preceded it!). And while you can't blame Nirvana for what was to follow in the 90's, Kurt's "tortured soul/woh is me/this life is so uninspiring" lyrics influenced countless whining "nu-metal" bands that pollute the airwaves to this day. Disillusionment is fine - it's obviously a cornerstone of rock music and well pre-dates Nirvana. It just hasn't been done very well in over 10 years.
Hey, I liked "Nevermind". While it does conveniently signify a changing of the guard in rock history it is by no means the cause. The album was/is quite good, not great, and certainly no more significant than Pearl Jam's "Ten".
Pearl Jam's "Ten" certainly remains a favourite... wished Eddie lived what he writes. Wish I did, too.
"I lived through the 80s, Ken - Nirvana ended the wasteland, they didn't start it."
What exactly were you listening to in the 80's? Because I was listening to excellent music (that I still listen to every chance I get). Music with heart and soul. Music with power and confidence. Music with skill and energy and fun and rebeliousness. Music by people with excellent voices that knew how to use them.
Where can you find that today? Not from the hip-hop "bands". Not from Britney or Christina or Jenny-from-the-block.
Nobody on the radio today is worthy of carrying Bon Jovi's electric guitar case.
Well, it's a subjective thing, and some above get into the Honourable Mentions list. It need a longer list, I think.
Also, what do you define as rock?
So, FWIW some additional candidates from a rather warped UK perspective(including 80's/90's possibles):
Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Link Wray, The Byrds, Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Love, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Fairport Convention, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Sly & Robbie, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Deep Purple, Slade, T. Rex, Fleetwood Mac, AC-DC, Blondie, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, New Order, Sisters of Mercy, Talking Heads, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, Husker Du, Brian Eno, Screaming Trees, Bomb the Bass, The KLF, The Orb, Massive Attack, House of Love, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld.
(and, of course, above all others, Hawkwind ;)
Ken,
Specifically what music were you listening to in the 80s? I liked a couple of the Police's albums, and the Pretenders' "Learning to Crawl" is great. The Cult's "Love" came out in '85, I believe, and the Chili Peppers came out sometime in the mid 80s. The rest of the music I remember hearing was kind of slick, mass produced stuff, as the late Frank Zappa put it, "Strictly from commercial." But then I only heard the stuff on the radio like the Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, Duran Duran, Berlin, Aha (sic?), Simple Minds (although their song from "The Breakfast Club" remains one of my guilty pleasures), etc.
Except for The beatles, the rolling stones, velvet underground, Ramones and Led Zeppelin, the rest should go, and i would put The Who, which is my favorite band in front or at least in the top three, their greatest hits cd My generation is probably the best cd that i have listened to in my life. Also Jimi Hendrix should be in the top 5 cuz were forgetting here the best guitarist ever, and though he didnt make many albums he still shouldnt be forgoten. I would also have the red hot chili peppers in the mix, discluding their punk songs, they would be one of the best bands. Also Nirvana and Queen should be in the top ten.
the order goes:
1.led zeppelin
2.black sabbath
3.ac/dc
4.van halen
5.metallica
6.rolling stones
7.pink floyd
8.the who
9.nirvana
10.guns n' roses
Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd are the bands I'd agree with the list. And all the rest shouldn't belong there. However, These are my top 10.
1. Guns N Roses
2. Aerosmith
3. Bon Jovi
4. Motley Crue
5. Queen
6. Def Leppard
7. Bryan Adams
8. Scorpions
9. Red Hot Chilli Peppers
10. Nirvana
This is the law of the land!
The ten greatest rock bands EVER
1) The Beatles
2) The Who
3) Zep
4) Rolling Stones
5) Jimi and the Jimi Hendrix experience!!
6) The Doors
7) Bruce and the E-street band
8) Eagles
9)Buddy Holly (wait, let me speak! Holly opened the door when he died so did music!)
10) Dylan (made some great solo stuff and stuff with THE BAND)
I still feel awful for leaving people like the Alman borthers, Lynryd Skinner (maybe?), Aerosmith, and awesome bands and such...
You can throw Queen in there around 11-13
OK people let me tell you how the real list goes. Its not much different from the those already listed but some of you leave out the greatest band of all time.
TOP TEN
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Rolling Stones
3. Black Sabbath
4. ACDC
5. Metallica
6. The Doors
7. The Beatles
8. Nirvana
9. Pink Floyd
10. Van Halen
ok, when i first read this list, i almost cried when i had to scroll down to number 6 to find zeppelin. Of the 10 bands he listed, only zeppelin, the beatles and the stones deserve to be there. the others are all good but have no place in the top 10 rock bands ever. if we are going on influence here, metallica, the allman brothers, and black sabbath have to be one there. these bands defined their respected forms of rock. alas, here is my list based not on who i like (because my favorit band isnt on here), but on who revolutionized the entire idea of rock music.
1. the beatles (define what we now know as rock)
2. led zeppelin (look at of hits to songs realeased)
3. the rolling stones (stem from beatles, nearly as influential)
4. metallica (the reason for 99 of music since 1983)
5. the who (no better straight-ahead rockers
6. black sabbath (paved the way for the darker side of rock)
7. the allman brothers (the reason for the term 'southern rock')
8. the doors (would be higher if morrison would have lasted a few more years)
9. ac/dc (try to NOT name a song by them)
10. the jimi hendrix experience (although not the first to perform a guitar solo, the reason we still do it)
i would love email with some comments and thoughts. thanks for the time all.
sorry everyone, but please insert the word "percent" where the led zeppelin and metallica comments lose coherence above. thanks.
Hey! most of the bands am Agree
But my best rock bands that since I was a kid I have been fascinating are:
offspring
nirvana
Aerosmith
Metallica
red hot chili pepper
Rage againts the machine
guns'n roses
guardian
petra
Whitecross
stryper
1)The Beatles- No Reason Needed
2)Led Zeppelin-The greatest hard/rock band ever
3)The Rolling Stones- The longest running and one of the most significant band of all time
4)Nirvana- People may disagree, but they did more for the music industry in 3 years than people who been in the business for 20.
5)Metallica- After Black Sabbath, but they did it best.
6)The Who- No one else sounds like them, just a great band
7)Black Sabbath- Simple, invented hard rock
8)AC/DC- Just a kick-ass band, with an amazing guitarist, Angus Young forever!
9)Jimi Hendrix- Greatest guitarist ever
10)The Doors- Intelligent songs, great front man, hard riffs, what more do you want?
11)Guns-N-Roses- Tough kick-ass attitude, with some of the best guitar work ever, they could have been the next Rolling Stones
This subject is very, well, subjective. It is very difficult to narrow it down to 50 bands, much less 10. Then you have the whole "band" thing. Does Jimi Hendrix and The Experience or Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band really count. And if they do, would'nt you have to include other great solo artists because they have a back-up band. Not to mention the personal preferences of every rockin' human on earth.
See what I mean.
However, I think the following list of 20 can be agreed on by the majority (at least 50.0000001%) of the rock n' roll community. In no particular order, my choices would be:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Aerosmith
ZZ Top
AC/DC
Van Halen
Led Zepplin
Black Sabbath
Def Leppard
Pink Floyd
Kiss
Queen
Lynard Skynard
Nirvana
U2
The Eagles
The Doors
Metallica
The Who
Grateful Dead
And I'm still leaving out a myraid of other bands that are definately worthy like Rush, Motley Crue, Alice In Chains, Guns n'Roses, Pearl Jam, Creed, Bon Jovi, The Police, The Ramones, Cream, Deep Purple, R.E.M. and The Beach Boys just to name a few. I could go on and on. Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Steely Dan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yes, Stone Temple Pilots, Supertramp.
See what I mean? And all the bands that I've Mentioned started well before the year 2000, so what about the Velvet Revolvers, Audioslaves, White Stripes, Nickelbacks and Puddle of Mudds of the world, huh? Very subjective.
The Kinks. If you don't believe me, listen to Village Green Preservation Society. Then try to deny them a place.
Any one who doesn't have the Beatles on their list is just naming their favorite bands. They created rock as we know it. It would have been nice to see a Southern rock band like Allman brothers or CCR on the list.
There shouldn't be any bands formed after 1985 on that list. Good bands after 85 are just breaths of fresh air from the craphole that is modern music. Bands like Guns'n'Roses, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Lost Prophets and others like them are great, but they have not profoundly changed rock. And WHAT THE HELL IS "HEY YA DOING ON THE LIST OF THE 10 BEST ROCK SONGS?!
I'd have included The Clash, Bruce, AC/DC, The Smiths, and The Police.
Here goes my list:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Queen
Led Zeppelin
Eagles
Pink Floyd
The Doors
Metallica
U2
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Guns `n` roses
Deep Purple
It is really incredible that Queen is not in the top ten. What was MSNBC thinking?
Are we talking about the US alone or the world?
I am 17 and I know more about this than you ever will. Here is my list.
1. Led Zepplin
2. The Who
3. Pink Floyd
4. Lynard Skynard
5. Nirvana
6. Eagles
7. Aerosmith
8. AC/DC
9. Black Sabbath
10. Weezer
ok everyone i feel just as strongly as all of you but there is no way to get everyone to agree on this kind of thing so i think we should give this guy a brake and stop complaining about his list even if he did include outkast. heres my list just becasue i wanted to make one
1-the beatles
2-led zepplin
3-bob marley
4-the eagles
5-acdc
6-lynard skynard
7-guns n roses
8-sly and the family stone
9-queen
10-tom petty
Why Wasn't The WHo in there? They Started Smashing Instruments and queen wasn't in there nor acdc come on and i like peytons list except weezer, i use to like them but u cant listen to them very long they definatly dont belong in the top 10
That list of the nbc journalist doesn't keep respect for the best rock bands in the history of the world. Bands appearing and not appearing in the list.
If you do a list of the best bands ever, you cannot hierachice it. I think that nobody can put beatles over rolling stones or rolling stones over beatles. My subjective list of 10 best rock bands (not in order) is:
QUEEN (the one that i'm fan)
THE ROLLING STONES (A Culture, 3 generations of fans in the same stadium)
THE BEATLES (history. the revolution of the rock)
LED ZEPPELIN (everyone who loves rock, loves led)
PINK FLOYD (poetry)
AC/DC (the most powerful)
THE DOORS (love me two times baby)
U2 (i don't like it, but is in the list)
RAMONES (the punkroc)
METALLICA (or Guns N' Roses?)
Only my point of view. not a sentence.
GAB
There is a first place tie:
1. The Beatles
1.A) Led Zeppelin
The only other band that even comes close to these two is Pink Floyd.
HEHEHEHEH
The fact is for me
the best ever band is
1.Deep Purple their solos, and songs are simply unmatched and beauty of their music is legendary so they are simply the best...........
2.Pink Floyd
great lyrics combined with fabulous instrumentals
3.Stones
4.Led Zeppelin
5.The Cream
6.The Beatles
7.The Doors
8.The Who
9.Guns 'n' Roses
10.Nirvana
Thi is top list............
other bands are pale copies of these bands......
so long.......
The best bands in my order:
1. Rolling Stones (Can play all different genres of rock, and kick ass in concert, just listen to Midnight Rambler live from 1973 King Biscuit Flower hour)
2. Beatles (Couldn't rock as much as the Stones)
3. Led Zeppelin (one song says it all ROCK and ROLL)
4. The Who (buy the revised copy of Who's Next with 1971 live performance)
5. Jimi Hendrix (simply the best guitarist ever in rock)
6. Cream (Clapton played some incredible songs back then)
7. U2 (Gets a lot of flak from some fans here, but they can totally rock)
8. Guns n Roses (Axl Rose really f*@ked up their place in history - could have and should have been this generations Stones)
9. Pink Floyd (for Dark Side of the Moon alone!)
10.Aerosmith (Loved them since 1975's "Toys in the Attic" album)
The Best is Pink Floyd. Experiments that begun with Syd and Piper at the gates of dawn went on with Gilmour and Waters on Live in Pompeii, saucerful of secrets, more, one of my favourites ummagumma, legendary atom heart mother, meddle, relics, great obscured by clouds, superb dark side of the moon, masters of rock and then with the best of the best Wish you were here, animals Wall(piece of history), final cut(piece of shit, their worst album) and then (some will say bad but I say exellent momentary lapse of reason and division bell. No other band can reach them. For the rest here it comes (In no particular order):
-Led Zeppelin (I simply can't explain. It belongs to history)
-Deep Purple (the first prog hard rock band. If you listen to Dream Theater you will understand)
-Velvet Underground (you konw why!!!)
-The Doors (they combined lots of stuff in one from blues and pop to hard and psichodelic rock)
-CCR (every generation listen to their music)
-Jimi and the experience (he invented guitar solos)
-Beatles (the first band that started experiments in R'n'R)
-Stones (even I don't like them)
-Metallica (they inspired most of the musicants after 1990)
My top twenty- five rock bands are:
1. ACDC
2. Led Zeplin
3. KISS
4. Motely Crue
5. Pink Floyd
6. Twisted Sister
7. Lynard Skynard

U2 is one of the greatest bands in the history of Rock for a couple of reasons:
1.) They have lasted over 25 years WITH THE SAME FOUR MEMBERS,NO BREAKUPS,NO SPLITS..... NO OTHER BAND HAS DONE THAT,NOT ONE...SO THAT IN ITSELF MAKES THEM GREAT.THAT IS AN AMAZING ACHIEVMENT.
2.) THEY HAVE A UNIQUE SOUND,THEY DON'T SOUND LIKE ANY OTHER BAND AND THEY HAVEN'T RIPPED OFF ANY OTHER BAND IN TERMS OF STYLE.
3.) AFTER 25 YEARS THEY ARE STILL MORE POPULAR THAN EVER BANDS USUALLY DECLINE IN POPULARITY AS THEY GET OLDER U2 HAS REMAINED POPULAR THROUGH 3 DECADES
4.) RESPECT FROM THEIR PEERS: METALLICA,ANTHRAX,RHCP,REM,FOO FIGHTERS,COLDPLAY ETC,ETC,ETC ALL LIKE U2
Like most of you, I don't think that the best bands ever were mentioned in this top 10. First of all, I would like to suggest that a band, in order to be GREAT it should be well-known during the period it evolved in.
My top ten would be :
1-The Beatles (nobody could ever underestimate their influence on rock and the way they evolved from LOVE LOVE ME DO to songs really interesting as Hey Jude or Eleonor Rigby)
2-The Rolling Stones (always cool to hear Jagger)
3-Led Zeppelin (They have the best song ever made STARWAY TO HEAVEN)
4-U2 (as said earlier, their popularity is still growing and their latest 2 CDs have made great sales)
5-Metallica (Some people might disagree but I think that without Metallica, Heavy Metal would have died...seriously)
6-Pink Floyd (they are simply the most deep band ever and it's a shame that Roger Waters isn't still with the band...)
7- The Doors (Jim Morrison was and still is an obsession for lots of people)
8-Nirvana (Personnally I don't like them but they changed the course Rock was going)
9-Queen (you can't tell me that Freddie Mercury wasn't a legend...please don't)
10-Red Hot Chili Peppers.

10-Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I don't know a lot about other rock bands but i do know that Red Hot Chili Peppers should be in the top ten, maybe not in the top 5 (in most people's opinion not mine - i think they should be)but definetely in the top ten because they have made such a huge impact on people all around the world.
Their guitarists rock and Chad the drummer is hard to compare with.
They have lasted more than 20 years and a huge variety of people love them and they are awesome live! I think a band is not worth listening to if they are crap live!
my favorite bands are:
the beatles
the doors
jefferson airplane
pink floyd
led zeppelin
jimmi hendrix
janis joplin
the who
santana
jethro tull

Twisted Sister? #10!?! Please tell me you did that because you're related to Dee Snyder...
Older bands:
Pink Floyd
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Led Zeppelin
Newer acts:
Tool
Radiohead
The Smashing Pumpkins (deserve more credit IMO)
Just one thing please, I don't want to see BON JOVI mentionned as one of the best Rock band ever. Nobody could possibly justify it.
Thank you.
i've only been listening to rock for about 7 months so cut me some slack if i missed some good bands
1.The Beatles
2.The Rolling Stones
3.Led Zeppelin
4.Pink Floyd
5.Queen
6.ACDC
7.Jimi Hendrix
8.Aerosmith
9.Guns n Roses
10.Nirvana
iknow i left out some great bands but its impossible to make a top 10 list without leaving some bands out
Just one question. Why aren't QUEEN in the top ten? After all, they are one of the most influencial bands ever, with a catalogue of classics. We hear their songs getting played from adverts to football grounds, and being one of the greatest live acts the world has seen, you would think that might justify my opinion? It's a shambles when the above has not been taken into consideration when deciding this erroneous poll!
ok all u guys got it mixed up and i know how it goes. I mean come on........zz top?, poision?, SCORPION? what is the world coming to? ok lets straighten things out. first of all... i love bob marley, he's awesome and he's got some great music BUT...he's not a rocker, he is reggae! Secondly, this is how the order goes:
1.AC/DC
2.led zeppelin
3.blink-182
4.jimi hendrix
5.greenday
6.the who
7.pink floyd
8.Aerosmith
9.van halen
10.RUSH
Oh yeah. what the hell is "hey ya!" doing on the top ten??? that is....well it aint rock.
you cant make a top 10 list like this. there are so many good artists. break it down to after 80s and before 80s i guess.
just a few extras no one bothered to say are steve vai, frank zappa, joe satriani, yngwie malmsteen, jeff beck, the yardbirds
Queen, Judas Priest, and the Beatles are all extremely bad and and dont belong on any list of great rock bands.
pink floyd is the best band ever but u cant exclude deep purple and queen from the top ten list
im only gonna say one thing here.....i would put ACDC close to number one only behind the greats like led zeppelin and the rolling stones. sonething like this...
1. the rolling stones and led zeppelin (tie)
3. ACDC
4. Aerosmith
5. pink floyd
6. jimi hendrix
7. pearl jam
8. lynrd skynyrd
9. nirvana
10.metallica
thats the plain truth right there....only leaving out some of the other cool ones like the offspring and green day and stone temple pilots.
The Beatles belong at number 1- no other band has songs like "Here Comes the Sun" or "Strawberry Fields Forever". Listen to Abbey Road- if you don't think any of that is good, classic rock, then something's wrong in your head.
As for jumping on the bandwagon- Queen definitely deserves a spot. No other band on earth could have done "Bohemian Rhapsody".
I can't stand hair metal or grunge so my opinion is a bit biased against Nirvana.
Earlier on someone's list- how does Green Day make it on the list as one of the best rock bands ever? Not at all. Sure they're a good band, but their "American Idiot" would be nothing without innovators of rock opera- The Who. Green Day is just a good band but they haven't shaped the face of rock. That title deserves to the early bands- Stones, Beatles, Who, Hendrix, etc.
There's another solo act that I might have skimmed over- Elvis. Sure, we know him for the love songs, but he was the first. He started rock as we know it, before the Beatles, before the Stones.
Guns 'n roses does not deserve to be on the list, period. They are way overrated. The REAL top rock bands/individuals ever:
1) The Beatles (Obviously)
2) The Rolling Stones
3) Led Zeppelin
4) AC/DC
5) Lynyrd Skynyrd
6) Peter Frampton
7) Simon & Garfunkel
8) Marvin Gaye
9) Jimi Hendrix
10) Bruce Springsteen
Honorable Mentions: 1)The Eagles (Lyin' Eyes and Witchy Woman are great songs) 2) Eric Clapton (Wonderful Tonight and Layla) 3) Kansas 4) Rod Stewart
Maybe Hendrix and Springsteen deserve to be higher, but i'm too lazy to redo part of the list.
#57, I'll give you Queen and Judas Priest, but to say the Beatles were anything but great is profound philistinism.
Led Zeppelin is number one.
Just listen dazed and confused. No additional comment attached.
And all other bands come after LZ. In no particular order.
Been dazed and confused
for so long it's not true...
Here's my list:
1)Matt Caimi and Ben Austin(Best Duo of alltime!)
2)Beatles
3)Zeppelin
4)Los Stones
5)James Marshal Hendrix Expirience
6)The^
Who
7)Jim and the DoorS
8)Queen
9)(no one is nineth, its a sacred spot)
10)Dav Bowie
Led Zeppelin is not number one. There is no sane person that can argue they were more influential to music (particularly rock) than The Beatles. Therefore it is almost impossible to argue against The Beatles position at number one.
I am surprised and happy at the same time. I don't see a strong mention of my favourite, Pink Floyd although it has a strong presence. But then again no body seems to be in disagreement about Pink Floyd.
The reason they are my favourite is that they are a true band, perfectly tuned to each other. To me, listening to them is a roller coaster of dajavu's. I discover them in the sounds that surround me everyday. I mean listen to these guys. They are untidy, noisey and they are so unlike musicians (who sell dreams) yet the undelying melody is so strong that it overowes everything; right out of real life. Let's not talk about the lyrics which in my opinion are the most radical act of second half of this cetury.
I say this all with due respect to all the other bands and their fans. I just listened to 'Stairway to heaven' before I wrote this (That's probably the only band I have not been properly introduced to) and now I know why so many people are in love with Led Zapplin. They are out of this world. You really can not compare a great artist with any other.
I guess trying to put the greatest in order is not appropriate for a true music lover. All of them enrich your soul in their own special way.
Shahamat, as a fellow Pink Floyd fan... thank you for saying all that!

1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Clash
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Who
5. Black Sabbath
6. Joy Division/New Order
7. David Bowie
8. The Cure
9. The Beatles
10. Velvet Underground
Before you Beatles fan start to go crazy, let me tell you why they are nine on my list. They didn't get very good until Revolver and Sgt. Pepper(years of sappy music before). The Clash are so much better than the Ramones. The Clash's songs actually sound differant from song to song unlike the Ramones stuff that all sounds exactly the same. No way does Nirvana belong in a top ten all time. Alice in Chains and RHCP are much better and they don't end up on the list so why should them. And now a top ten of the bands of the eighties that are all better than the most overrated band of all time U2
Anyone who disagrees with anything that I say please try and back up your opinions and write here.
1. New Order
2. The Cure
3. The Smiths
4. Skinny Puppy
5. Killing Joke
6. Depeche Mode
7. REM
8. Ministry
9. the Replacements
10. Talking Heads
all of them better than U2
Hey morons, it's spelled "LYNYRD SKYNYRD". Try to expend a little effort trying not to sound like idiots next time "LYNYRD SKYNYRD" is on one of your lists.
1. Led Zeppelin = no one even comes close
2. Pink Floyd = dark side of the moon Possibly best album ever
3. Creedance Cleerwater Revival = Good ol' boys
4. Steve Miller Band = Perhaps the most underated band of all time (up there with Collective Soul)
5. Boston = Awesome vocal talent
6. the Eagles = Great listening anytime
7. the Beatles = Never really got into them but undeniably world-changing
8. Lynyrd Skynyrd = Rockabilly all the way
9. Van Halen = No one can ever copy their awesome guitar/synthasizer sound
10. AC/DC = Back in Black is the best song intro of all time
oasis, rolling stones, beatles, U2 and coldplay
#71, thank you. You tell 'em. That was pissing me off every time i saw it.
Now obviously I don't expect all you animals to agree w/ this list but....what the hell? Here goes:
1. The Beatles (they are just THE BAND, you can't beat 'em sorry.)
2. Led Zep (everyone copies them, they built hard rock. no questions asked. Don't believe me, listen to Good Times Bad Times, immigrant Song, or Kashmir....and obviously Stairway)
3. Pink Floyd (two words.....holy shit. These guys weren't afraid of doing ANYTHING you can listen to stuff off Piper, then listen to The Wall, and think it's two different bands)
4.Lynyrd Skynyrd (they may not have been the first, but they were definately the best. Free Bird is a Holy Song. I also love Gimme Three Steps
5. Stones (the Beatles reincarnated as a ravenous beast. I once heard a quote: "The Beatles wanted to hold your hand, the Rolling Stones wanted to burn down your town.")
6.Santana (Helooooo? They 100% INVENTED Latin rock, which was unheard of prior to them. plus Carlos could kick your ass, and you know it.)
7. RHCP (my favorite band. I honestly think they kept funk alive with they're unique style of Funk-Rock fusion. Flea can play bass like a mother as well.)
8.The Who (well.....idk why they are, but they are.)
9. Grateful Dead (hell yes they deserve to be on this list. They are the most Jammin' jam band i've ever layed my ears upon. JG had some of the best improv skills on the planet, I'd have to say closely followed by Trey Anastasio though.)
10. J. Geils Band (yes, the J. Geils Band. I think they are definately underrated when it comes to this. Magic Dick is the most insane harmonica.....er on the planet. He made it rock as much as the guitars! that's skill. Don't believe me? Whammer Jammer. as for the rest of the band, listen to Give it to Me, Musta Got Lost, and Centerfold. It's awesome)
Thanks, make sure to comment
OK morons, like I said earlier, it's spelled "LYNYRD SKYNYRD". But not only that, it's also spelled "LED ZEPPELIN" not "LED ZEPPLIN." Dolts.

1000000000000000000000 the doors i HATE them
OK, Number 77, just because you disagree with "Rajiv"'s opinion about "The Doors" doesn't mean you need to say that you hate him. You are a pathetic person if you hate a random person on the internet because he has differing views than you ON A BAND. Grow up.
My Top 10 List:
1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Beatles
3. Rolling Stones
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Queen
6. Bob Dylan
7. The Who
8. Cream
9. The Doors
10. Pink Floyd
5 Greatest Bands Of All Time
1. Led Zeppelin (Hands down)
2. Rolling Stones
3. Queen
4. The Doors
5. Cream
Elvis Presley is truly the greatest rock artist that ever lived. I cannot believe he isn't on the list.
well, i'm sorry i agree w/ you and retract my statement. It's not that i hate you, it's that i hate the fact that you hate the doors. they were never mean to you. but anyways sorry and i hope you'll still be my friend (:
As Hungary's Ambassador (and Rocker) Simonyi explained to us all in his Winds of Change.NET Guest Blog, freedom is about letting others find the music they like and identify with. That's what helped his group find an oasis of freedom in an opressive, totalitarian society - that taste of musical freedom reaching them through the darkness.
So thanks for being big enough to apologize (I checked the IP etc - it seems to be the same person). It matters.
The Doors were a great band, and they will be remembered for a long time because of all the people like you and me who DO like them a lot.
But there will always be some people who will dislike ANY artist, just as there are twisted people who actually like disco. Oh, well.
Long live Rock... and the freedom it represents!
I agree with all the comments re; putting Nirvana in there, but to suggest that there's been a wasteland of rock since Kurt's death is inflating a myth. For mine there's another band who have turned the rock establishment on it's head, who have influenced more bands than can be named, and who are still around: Radiohead. OK Computer? Kid A? Amnesiac? The Bneds? Hail to the Thief? Come on...where's the integrity in this list.
Where the hell are Oasis, The Stone Roses or Bob Dylan? Here is the top ten i would have picked:
1. The Beatles - Sorry but know one can argue, they are simply the greatest
2. Jimi Hendrix - The guy played guitar better than anyone to this day in the 60s
3. The Rolling Stones - Heavily blues influenced introducing it to a white audience
4. Bob Dylan - Influences absoloutely everyone with the best lyrics ever written in songs
5. Oasis - The band that changed brittish music forever and defined a generation with "Definately Maybe" , cant beleive the lack of mentions
6. The Stone Roses - One of the most underrated bands ever who mixed funk with rock, developed an unmistakable unique sound and made "The Stone Roses", listen to it and the rest is history
7. Led Zeppelin - Cant exactly leave them out can i?
8. Pink Floyd - Made music that completely blows the mind
9. Bruce Springsteen - Perhaps Dylans biggest influence is simply fantastic
10. U2 - Despite the debate, they deserve a place going by "The Joshua Tree" alone
Honorable Mentions - The Who, The Velvet Underground, The Kinks or Free could well be included on another day
Ok here is the definitive list of the greatest rock bands
1. Beatle
2. Stones
3. The Who
4. Led Zellein
5. Pink Floyd
Those top five ARE definitive
Bands Should be in the TOP! 10
The Who .. The Doors .. AC/DC .. Black Sabbath .. Jethro Tull .. Lynyrd Skynyrd .. Jimi Hendrix .. Elvis Presley .. Judas Priest .. Metallica .. the List Btw is very Good But PLEASE U2!! SLY! OH MY GOD!!
Why oh why aren't QUEEN in the top 10?? It's pretty insane that they don't get a mention. In my opinion they should at least be number 2 or 3. PLEASE PUT QUEEN IN THE TOP 10!!
I saw weezer, green day and eew blink 182 on someones list
my list is like this
1 the beatles (i don't like them much but everyone else worshipped them)
2 Led Zeppelin (the first hard rock band)
3 Metallica (my favourite, they saved heavy metal and they're under-rated)
4 Queen (Classic rock)
5 Pink Floyd (not music it's art)
6 Aerosmith (best comeback ever)
7 AC/DC (hard rock period)
8 Pearl Jam (they would never sell-out ever)
9 Jimi Hendrix (the best guitarist ever)
10 Van Halen (ROCK N'ROLL)
well...i'm sure the list was made to be subjective but...how can the Doors not be there? at least in the top 5 , going to any of their concerts was a religion experience guys!! Jim Morrison was the shaman and the audience the tribe ( any of you saw the movie? thou it portraied wrong Jim Morrison...it had that flair the doors concerts had ) they mixed poetry and music and songs like "the end" and "when the musics over" are simply wonderfull songs , unique in their type , problem with the doors it's maybe that it's kind of difficult to understand them , but try , relax and let the Doors seduce you on their trip...
Well #33 Peyton im 15 and u dont no more than i will ever no because weezer sucks here are the bands
1-Aerosmith
2-Led Zeppelin

and the rolling stones, nirvana, AC/DC,guns n' roses, just please if your favourite band isn't up there don't wet yourself, okay?

I cannot believe people voted for u2, velvet underground, and sky? Stone temple pilots were better than velvet underground. And c'mon, look at the band with the most likeable , hit songs. Not just because they're a hit, but because they kick ass and who do you find, LED ZEPPELLIN, and anyone who disagrees and says u2, usuck. but anything else is subjective. BUT!, no one with any musical sense can say LED ZEPPELIN was not in the top two greatest rock bands ever, period! I am listening to them right now and I suggest you do too!!!!
My top 10 best bands ever:
1. Queen
2. AC/DC
3. Bon Jovi
4. Guns 'n' Roses
5. Nirvana
6. The Rolling Stones
7. Aerosmith
8. U2
9. The Beatles
10. Led Zeppelin
I get really annoyed when people knock U2 and question their place in rock.
It needs no explaining, three decades, same members, vitually every album release sells over 10 million copies, they are unique, unfluential, and a great live band, plus they have the respect of most great bands.
The Edge is the most inventive guitar player since Hendrix.
I think no3 is fine even 2.
The Who should have made top 10 as well, earlier posters saying Marley, U2, shouldnt be there is crap, its all a form of rock, whether its alt prog, rock, reggae its all rock my friends !
No way man. U2 has the crappiest rythym section in rock and roll, distractingly stupid and never-ironic lyrics, and the edge has sounded basically the same since 1965 or whenever their first album came out. You can't call using the same f'in riff for 20 years "inventive," sorry.
U2 is rock for people with fat asses
-Henry Rollins
Well.. actually War and Joshua tree were brilliant .
Mihai: Bon Jovi AHEAD of Led Zeppelin? Say it ain't so....
My top ten:
1. Led Zepplin- no one embodies rock n roll better then them
2. Black Sabbath-influenced almost every band since them
3. Metallica- its freakin METALLICA \m/
4. AC/DC- most momorable riffs ever
5. Jimi Hendrix- songs still played as if he is a current act
6. The Who- completely original, greatest drummer ever
7. Nirvana- changed the face of rock n roll
8. Sex Pistols- brought punk out of the gutter
9. Slayer- absolutley heaviest ever, invented speed metal
10. Pink Floyd- the pinnacle of psychadellic music
never really liked bands like the rolling stones and the beatles
The order of the best rock bands goes ( in no specific order):
Coldplay (sooner or later)
Radiohead
Nirvana
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Who
Pearl Jam

7.The who (Great band)
8.Kiss (Love em)
9.Mettalica (Saved hard rock)
10.Bob Marley (Might be reggae but I dont care)
my two cents
anyone who doesn't include the beatles in their list is ignoring the obvious--sure, they weren't hard rock, and in some people's opinions, they didn't get any good until revolver, etc (which I can agree with by the way, their early stuff kind of sounds all the same to me)--the beatles are THE most influential band ever. can you even think about where music would be today IF not for the four lads from liverpool? they were changing music as the sixties knew it. the beatles are still the best-selling band of all time, and they are that way for a reason.
now that isn't to say that they are my favourite band, but i just thought i would put forth an arguement for the beatles.....they most definitely deserve to be number one in any list.
(to the person who said they were 17 and knew everything about music: really? you do?)
MPS you crazy...???
The Beatles must be on a top ten list, they are one of the most popular and awesome bands ever.... but coldplay... give me a break.
Here's my list
1. Queen (there's no better rockband, they gave the best shows ever...and Freddie Mercury is big, very very big)
2. Led Zeppelin (I think, the best occupied band ever)
3. The Beatles (no band has sold more records)
4. Deep Purple (Made in Japan, best live album ever)
5. Guns 'n Roses (Short career, but it was very very good)
6. The Who (Keith Moon is the best)
7. Rolling Stones
8. Pink Floyd (best lyrics)
9. Lynyrd Skynyrd (freebird)
10. Radiohead (good, just good)
beatles must be on the list. they created RnR and they were an influence to all the bands that came after them
MPS, are you JOKING
the beatles are way more than just a boy band of their time. There was never that much excitement about a band until the beatles came along (although elvis did stir up some excitement). you think that in 1969 when they released abbey road and john lennon was posing naked with yoko ono with a huge amount of facial hair is an example of a boy band? nevermind the fact that when they DID dress the same, they were producing some of the most influential and different music of ALL time (ie srgt peppers).
um, naive lyrics and corny music? well jeez, i guess that's how you explain that 40 YEARS LATER they're still being called the most INFLUENTIAL and IMPORTANT band of all time (not to mention best selling).
on the other foot, everyone is entitled to their own opinion :)

sighs and looks up at ceiling
acdc, while i know you mean well, many of your bands are from the eighties, or at least were the most famous in the eighties. i realize that you are twelve, however...for the people who were around to see the beatles make their debut and and to see elvis die, what you chose is not music from ages and ages ago.
damn i feel old.
Two words: Bon Jovi
Here's My List.
1. LED ZEPPELIN (# ONE AND WILL ALWAYS BE)
2.AC/DC
PINK FLOYD
3. Guns N' Roses
4. Nirvana
5. Beatles (overrated)
6. Van Halen
7. Metallica
8. Aerosmith
9. Queen
10.Pearl Jam
NEXT 10
11. KISS
12. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers
13. Alice In Chains
14. The Rolling Stones (overrated, but honorable)
15. The Ramones
16. Jimi Hendrix Experiance
17. The Who
18.The Clash
19. Green Day
20. Cream
Deep Purple is good. U2 is good, but overrated. The Doors are pretty good. Def Leppard can be annoying, but has a few good songs. Bon Jovi sucks. From what I know about Lynyrd Skynard they are country. Sweet Home Alabama sounds like a counrty song. I hate country. ZZ Top is a good southern rock band. Cheap Trick is OK, but kind of wierd. Rush is AOR. They are pretty good, but the lead singer is Wierd looking. Judas Priest And Iron Maiden a good metal bands. not in the top twenty, though. Beatles are good, but i'm tired of hearing about them. they are not the best rock band ever. AC/DC, Floyd, Zeppelin, and GNR win the first four titles.
U2 would be lucky to make #20. Sly and The Family Stone are sensational. They should have been #1. Number 1,000,000,001 that is. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I barely know anything about the band. Zeppelin sohould be at least behind the Beatles, in my opinion, ahead of them. Stones only got #2 for longevity. U2 only got #3 for fighting AIDS and helping Africa, that does not mean helping Africans is bad, but it does not define a band's talent. Come on. The Dead shoulod be #50. they're just bla. Marley is good, but he's reggae. Guns N' Roses deserves to at least be #10. AC/DC should Be At least in the top 5. Nirvana should be in there. Queen. Kiss. Van Halen. Metallica. The WHO.
Here's their messed up reasoning:
1. Beatles- that's what everyone says. why don't we say it too.
2. Stones- have been around so long that we have to be put in the list.
3. U2- Political figures. us newspoeple talk about them so much because of the AIDS fight if we don't put them here, it will make us look bad.
4. The Grateful Dead - Well most people are grateful that their days as a band are dead, but we'll put them here to annoy people.
5. The Velvet Underground- The Bannana on the front of one of their CD'S is geniou, let's give them number five just for That!
6. Led Zeppelin-
Led who? never heard of the guy. People say he's good though. He's Supposed to be one of today's greatest artists.I wonder how long he's been around? must be new, though. Did'nt he sing Highway To Hell? That's a pretty new song. Hey! where'd our crack go, ohyeah, were high right now! I forgot. Thank god CNN isn't doing a list like this if they were we would be screwed.
7.Pink Floyd- These guys are popular, i thought they were rap though? I thought Eminem should be # 7 on this countdown. But if our ratings go up because of these guys lets put them in.
8. The Ramones- Oh yeah, them they are almost as good as the Sex Clash and The Pistols. Jay Leno told us to put them on.
9.Marley- We may not know Rock if it kicked us
in the a55, but oh well. Did'nt bob marley found heavy metal? Take that Fox news!!!!!
10.Sly and the Family Stone- Well Nirvanis is not that big Arrow Smith is unpopular. Gun and Rose is not that popular. The HOO are boring. Perrl Jamm is stupid. Who cares about Von Hallen and King(Queen). Metall-ca is silly. No one knows about the doorz or THE KISS. Oh, Sly and the family stone are the only african american rock singers. CNN says there is another one called Jimbo Hendricks, but what do they know?
I wonder what MSNBC would do. Oh, wait we are MSNBC!!! We're MSNBC and were out of crack. we are also broke and bankrupped, did we mention we need more crack!!!!!!
MSNBC, YOU ARE IDIOTS!!!!! THE ONLY KIND OF ROCK YOU KNOW IS THE KIND THAT IS FOUND ON THE GROUND.
I think there are no limits to who is the best or the greatest out of 10, but who is just world changing and mind-blowing in general.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

How can you not put The Clash in the top ten? By far the best band to come out of the punk scene of the late 70's and by far the most musically diverse. Not only did they write punk songs they branched out and their most higly acclaimed album, London Calling, was definitely not punk. That is why they should be on there.
Top Ten:
The Clash
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Jimi Hendrix
The Who
Cream
Nirvana
Chuck Berry
I believe that the majority of you are forgetting a very VERY VERY influential band from the 70s, the talking heads! there have been so many covers by their songs from bands from every generation. There have been remixes, jams and funks all in the name of covering the talking heads awesome jams, even yesterday as phish played on stage, they stole the antics of head bobbing and phunk. Place the talking heads higher on your lists, if you dont then you just dont understand.
this is a terrible list! the ramones are punkrock, and u2 shouldn't be in the top 30 because of there cheesy and illogical lyrics plus the exact same music over and over and over. the grateful dead and velvet underground are good bands, fantastic maybe but aren't better than the most influencial band ever in the world of hard rock: Led Zeppelin. Bob Marley and the Wailers are good but aren't even rock n' roll! Sly and the family stone wern't even in my mind when i thought THE BEST IN ROCK N' ROLL!!! In my opinion the list goes like this(this is the top 15):
1) the beatles - no question without a doubt the original rock n' roll band.
2) Led Zeppelin - aside from the beatles zeppelin was the best.
3) Pink Floyd - a very poetic and instrumental band, nearly poetry.
4) the who - gave birth to hard rock.
5) jimi hendrix (and the expierience) - such an innovative guitrist, it's wonder creative and everything.
6) aerosmith - a classic AND modern american band
7) ac/dc - their music sounds similar everytime but it's good music.
8)black sabbath - a darker version of rock
9)metallica - a personal favourite, musicianship was always amazing (the call of ktulu and orion).
10)Lynyrd Skynyrd - I was six years old and still understanding and loving their music. It sounds like country music but it's still good.
11) the doors - they probably deserve better but they're definetly up there with the best.
12) queen - one of the best singers all-time.
13) alice cooper - the first man to change his name to a woman's name and still be accepted as one of the most manly men ever.
14) van halen - deserves to be up there just because of the guitars.
15) nirvana - or guns n' roses, pearl jam, david bowie, the rolling stones or another band that was good but not incredibly good.
As for the songs and bands other than zeppelin, the beatles, floyd i agree completely with billy storey, the people at msnbc ARE MORONS!!!
top 10 best Rock bands ever
hard to say and to put into a list but with no dout the best is the beatles but this is a list of my fav
1.The Beatles(they are rock n roll)
2.Pink Floyd(the best jam band)
3.Zeppelin(best hard rock)
4.Hendrix(Best Guitar player)
5.Stones(give them props for there talent)
6.the who(another great meatle band)
7.Dyaln(very influential)
8.Lynyrd Skynyrd(very cliche down south but still some great songs)
9.metallica(any time before saint anger)
10.Greatful dead(jerry is the man)
there are still alot of great bands that could fit any where from 8 or so down but this is just what i felt at the time props to bob marley queen, nervana, guns n roses, aerosmith, alice in chains, rhcp,311,green day, soundgarden, preal jam, frampton, srv, and so many more
The beatles sucess stems greatly from being the "first", listen to most of their songs and they come out as cheap, pop love songs. Dune II is the first RTS, far eclipsed by modern standards, but still a classic.
Queen however stand as the truely greastest rock band, even though its impossible to class them as a rock band. Every genre came under their songs, creating the "Queen" sound.
From Prog rock (without the use of synthesisers) to death metal they covered every shade of Rock, and are credited by virtually every Rock band since as an inspiration. Thrashing a guitar started on Brighton Rock, courtesy of May.
They did it all...something no other band could come close too accomplishing, thats why they are the greatest.
The Beatles will always be the best.
Simply because the songs are the best.
You can actually sing them......
Guys, i think there are more than 50 bands that needs to be mentioned. But i think you can place Led Zeppelin should head the list followed by The Beatles, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, The Who, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and Metallica
Sorry, i should have said
Led Zeppelin should be placed at the top of the list followed by ....
Hey you can also check the top artists and top albums at www.riaa.com
You would see the Beatles tops the list with Led Zeppelin at 3.
The greatest Rock band ever has just got to be Queen they are just complete legends. my list would be:
1. Queen
2. The Beatles
3. Rolling Stones
4. Led Zeppelin
5. The Who
6. The Clash
7. Guns and Roses
8. Deep Purple
9. Aerosmith
10. Nirvana
Wow ive jsut noticed something its one thing not to include Queen in the top ten but they arnt even included in the 'WHo do you thinnk should have been in the list poll' now i think thats a discrace!
Kudo's to those of you who put GNR on the list!
Honestly, which dickheads came up with this list. I'll give you the real list:
1.AC/DC
2.Led Zeppelin
3.Queen
4.The Rolling Stones
5.Aerosmith
6.Deep Purple
7.Pink Floyd
8.The Who
9.Van Halen
10.Guns N Roses
What has Nirvana ever done, they had about 3 good songs and to rate them above AC/DC would be a crime. Oh and to anyone who thinks all AC/DC's music sounds the same, your a frickin idiot. I own every album and there is no way they sound the same. Tell me how Highway to Hell sounds like Thunderstruck, or how Back in Black sounds even remotely like TNT. AC/DC are the best ever, PERIOD!!!
hey shea, it seems like u didn't pay much attention, only one dickhead came up with this list, eric olsen, here is your list:
1.ac/dc
2.led zeppelin
3.queen
4.the rolling stones
5.aerosmith
6.deep purple
7.pink floyd
8. the who
9. van halen
10. guns n' roses
here are the mistakes: the beatles aren't up there, but the rolling stones are, the order. the vocabulary: u know how to say dickhead and frikin idiot. the little paragraph at the end, i can name a bunch of great nivana songs but even if they didn't write as many good songs as ac/dc they were equally influencial. i'll go deeper detail, the 1990's were the grunge era, nirvana was the top grunge band alongside pearl jam, teenagers were dying their hair blonde and growing it to there shoulders, they started to pick up their first electric guitars, wearing doc martens and flannel shirts torn jeans and having a 'don't give a damn' attitude. i know that there are some ac/dc riffs that sound the same, hells yes i just can't name them off the top of my head. and i know that ac/dc isn't the best,(don't go have another) PERIOD!!!
hi
i think the best ever are the beatles no doubt if you listen to all their music you will understand theses guys were extremely gifted, another band is led zeppelin kind of unique excellent rock ,credence clearwater revival, pink floyd, many bands diferent styles U2 is a great band, cold play for example but some people say van halen i just laugh these people have no idea they talk about please dont allow this comments,,,,
i would like to thank you for receiving my opinion
Queen are the kings of rock...at that's all!
Beatles are the greatest band of all time, but they are not a rock band...
Rolling Stones may be the second best band ever, but it is not a rock band...
U2 is piece of shit - it is a pop band and has nothing to do with rock!
Beware of pseudogroups!
Here's my top 10:
1.*Rolling Stones*(they're playing for 40 years and their are better than ever)
2.*Guns N' Roses*(F**CKIN' AWSOME!!i love 'em!They could be the new Stones.Their period was to short and Axl destroyed perfect band!Come on Axl Rose-great voice,Slash is fantastic guitarist,Duff,Izzy(Gilby),Adler(Matt),DIzzy are profesionals!
3.*AC/DC*(great band,started hard rock,their music never dies)
4.*Led Zeppelin*(3 words:Stairway to heaven)
5.*Nirvana*(in 3 years Nirvana has done awsome things)
6.*the doors*(poetry+music for gods-the doors,they could be higher maybe?MORISON KING
7.*Metallica*(They are giving everything to rock metal music for 25 years, great songs)
8.*PanterA*(Dimebag never dies)
9.*Alice Cooper*(man with girls name but even more man.He is one style of rock his music is immortal)
10.Janis Joplin(best women's vocal ever)or Kiss(...)
PEACE...
OK now, many many bands said, many things said about beatles and the f**kin' stones - what's wrong with you people? How can you even think to compare Mick Jagger's disgusting voice with Freddie, Coverdale or Plant? Are you not normal putting these silly drunk grandfathers amongst the greatest bands? Oh come on, here is my list:
1. BLACK SABBATH - no one ever done so much great things for the heavy music as His Dark Majesty mr. Ozzy Osbourne and the outstanding and never-dying Black Sabbath.
2. PINK FLOYD - the greatest musicians, according to me, not much understandable by the little souls.
3. QUEEN - Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor & John Deacon - the greatest band, if you look at their attitude to each other, to the music, to the world - they were all genius.
4. LED ZEPPELIN - someone up there has written that LZ is 3 words "Stairway to heaven". I would kindly ask that person to go and f**k himself and maybe die after this. They are my favourite band, but I am writing this as a musician and my subjective opinion is not important.
5. DEEP PURPLE - what can you say about Purple? Great musicians played in that band, lots of bands started from members of Purple, for me, the most influential band ever.
6. DREAM THEATER - they are the gods of metal for me, the best heavy group, I am a big fan of their clinicly accurate playing, they are really amazing. I can say that I have been to many concerts, but they and Sabbath looked a class over the others.
7. RAINBOW - this group owes its greatness to only one person - Ritchie Blackmore. And let's don't forget DIO who is one of my favourite vocals.
8. WHITESNAKE - same as the band upper, but here the man is called DAVID COVERDALE and I really like Purple more with him than with Gillan or Dio.
9. IRON MAIDEN - really perfect, the first band I ever loved, before Purple, Zeppelin or Sabbath, they were the people that made me love hard music.
But as I said I am a realist, that's why I will put them at 9th place.
10. AC/DC - you thought I'd forget them? That's unforgivable, they are great, the biggest losses in the rock music are the deaths of Freddie, Bonzo and Bonn Scott.
So, that's my list, I have other favourite bands too - AEROSMITH, GUNS'N ROSES, KISS and many others, but the list was supposed to have 10 members. Bye from me.
These are my top ten artists in order:
1. The Beatles
2. The Ramones
3. Led Zeppelin
4. U2
5. The Clash
6. The Police
7. Miles Davis
8. Jimi Hendrix
9. The Doors
10. Bob Marley and the Wailers
I know, I know. Most people would never have a top ten without the Rolling Stones, and most people would never put the Ramones at number two. Well this is just my list, and as long as everyone accepts it as unquestionable fact then we have no problem.
Anthony Severe
ACDC are the best rock band ever, although some of their songs sound slightly similiar in the way they are set out, but they are the greatest and most deticated rock band ever.
Hey how many bands sound a lot better live than the soundtracks they are amazing.
we have forgotten the true rock bands. Christian rock is undoubtedly better than anything the beatles came up with. It can only be parallelled by the guys who did the "Hamster Dance". Mike Oldfield is a mad guy.
This is my list in order:
1.The Beatles
2.Rolling Stones
3.Led Zeppelin
4.Pink Floyd
5.AC/DC
6.Van Halen
7.Metallica
8.U2
9.The Who
10.Nirvana
Love those bands man!
HAHAH
The person that said BON JOVI must be the dumbest person in the world!
GOD! Get some taste u freak!
"It's my liiiiiiiiife... have a nice day!"
#1: The Beatles (I'm listening to them right now.)
#2 through infinity: The rest.
The Beatles changed music as they reinvented themselves over and over. The early 60's Beatles sounded different from the mid-60's Beatles, who sounded different from the late 60's Beatles. Hard to believe this was ONE band going in all of these directions. Lennon/McCartney were prolific songwriters, yet it never sounded like they copied themselves. Amazing.
1)pink floyd - they are the best undoubtedly, their music is something which every soul longs for.
2)beatles - need no explanation
3)led zepellin - hard rock masters
4)rolling stones - extension of beatles
5)cream - clapton rocks
6)the doors - could have gone higher if morrison was alive
7)white snake - create great music
8)the who - another good band
9)the eagles - great artist
10)cold play - modern day pink floyd
11)dire straits -
12)metallica - kept heavy metal alive
13)aerosmith - it rocks
MY TOP 10 WOULD BE
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers
3. Queen
4. Nirvana
5. Metallica
6. The Beatles
7. Pink Floyd
8. Aerosmith
9. Jimi Hendrix
10. The Eagles
In my opinion I find Queen as the best band. Its just that their music doesn't wear out no matter how long you listen to it. The Beatles are good but their music sorta sounded the same throughout most of their songs. Now for my top ten :
1:Queen
2:Pink Floyd
3:AC/DC
4:The Who
5:The Rolling Stones
6:Van Halen
7:Bruce Springsteen
8:Creed
9:Guns n' Roses
10:Beatles
****** Hope you don't get mad at me cause of what I wrote on this list, but remember this is my opinion and I'd like to stick with it
I'm from Serbia,Yugoslavia or whatever but I know a lot 'bout rock n' I think that you aint fair!Come on there's no DEEP PURPLE on the list!Child in time or smoke on the water are evergreen and they are not on the list!Dylan too!Marley is awesome but he is reggae! There's no AC/DC!Ok,ok here's my list:
1.Rolling Stones-Rock gods for 40 years!
2.Led Zeppelin-Without them there's no rock
3.Deep Purple-already said
4.AC/DC-unforgotable riffs,so much grat song, back in black intro...
5.Jimi Hendrix-the best guitarist EVER BORN
6.the doors-to bad for morisson. He was an icon in that period, but he's life was really really short, but his music is immortal
7.Queen-List without them is pure shit
8.Guns N' Roses-This is my favourite band but I'm realist.Really they deserved it!Come on:xteme guitar job, extra voice...They could be new stones but..Short carrer because of Axl
9.Nirvana-Nirvana is one period of this music.Cobain was an icon and he stil is!Nirvana has grat songs n' music so they have to be here!
10.Pink Floyd-They have mix of poetry,music art...
Great!
Thank you for listenin' me:)
its quite clear that the who, the beatles, led zepps, pink floyd, deep purple, rolling stones, ACDC, guns n roses, queen all belong!!!!red hot chilli peppers are not rock-they do not belong, u2 may be alright-but not rock!!!!!,
umm so there is one more for my top ten,
i would have to say the creedence clearwater revival needs a mention!! awesome stuff
forget 80s garbage like def leppard!!
INXS isnt too far out of my list either
Led Zeppelin are the Best. What are you all arguing about? The Best Solo, The Best Song, The Best Album. The Best Misicians. And Not Including Hendrix is a sin. And what was that ranking of Pink Floyd? Are you serious? The one who did this top ten surely did not think of it at all. And what about the doors?
for me it's
1-Pink floyd
2-Rolling Stones
3-Led Zeppelin (stairway to heaven, the best song ever...)
4-U2
5-Nirvana
6-Dire Straits
7-Metallica
(and maybe others groups like the beatles but i dont like them^^)
the velvet underground are mad. Try pay them out. Belle and Sebastien are quite clearly the best band ever, and by the best band ever i mean fairly good. Evermore's good. Any band from the eighties and early nineties is crap. They should be shot. Mike Oldfield - best guitarist ever.
INXS are ultimate crap
ok seriously... i don't understand people, i'm sure that if i asked anyone at my school what's the best rock band, they would all say Green Day for the American Idiot stupid album, i just have to say that U2 and such bands as Kiss or Judas Priest, or OMFG Metallicca, shouldn't even be mentioned in such articles, hey man we are talkinga bout the top 10, those belongs to a category called good bands that'll never make it. I'm a big Floydian, and in my opinion they rule all, but i agree that some bands deserve the famous first place, here's a list i think is really corect (according to the facts that i'm 14 years old and i kick ass)
1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Who
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Kinks (Village Green All The Way)
5. The Doors
6. Deep Purple
7. Queen
8. The Police
9. The Rolling Stones
10. The Beatles
Ok now agree or not but i sorted them by order of musical power, beatles we'r euber popular but i never realy felt that Love Me Do had a message worth any Who Or Floyd song, the top bands are classed there cause they play art, not music, they play soul blasting art, then its all about (not only good music) but musical power, i dont feel that bands like Bon Jovi should exist, or that today, new music should be legal, cause its just a neverending brainwashing. HEY MORONS STOP LISTENING TO PANIC AT THE DISC AND BUY DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
What???? No Sabbath, Dylan, The doors, or ACDC???? I'd even put CCR, Dire straits, or even...The Eagles on there ahead of some of those bands!!!!
ok people here it is hopefully everyone will shut up now. basically everyone has different taste but when taking all things into consideration it goes like this you have to be able to write a song playing scales is shit to me and no solo acts besides
ELVIS (there is only one KING i dont carewhat anyone says the beatles and every other band were fascinated by him it started with elvis copying lesser known artists, he is above the list and any musician will tell you the same)
1. the BEATLES
2.the ROLLING STONES (anybody who thinks the stones are not a choice for number one has no idea about rock n roll, they are way more rock than the beatles ever were. 43 yrs enuff said.
3. JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE ( anybody who thinks hes not the best complete electric guitar player ever is a moron)
4.LED ZEPPELIN (most talented four members ever assembled.also arguably at least 1 or two there is just so much red tape in the top 3 or 4 bands.its like fine cars drink and woman. give me them and some stones add n a little zz top you have the best guitar riffs ever written.)
5. THE DOORS
6. THE WHO (i dont know why never liked them or thought they werent that great. pete townsends guitar is over rated to me.
7.BLACK SABBATH ( and i hate ozzie)
8. PINK FLOYD ( great musicians but i dont think uncomfortably numb solos should be as high as they are on so many charts i think he has better solos in other songs. great musicians
9. QUEEN ( killer queen i guess)
10.AEROSMITH ( saw steven tyler and joe "f'ing" perry as steven says 2004 still rockin after 35 plus years.)
honorable mentions EAGLES, ERIC CLAPTON (CREAM)AC/DC, CHUCK BERRY (solo but i dont care made the guitar talk and move) ZZ top ,CCR,FLEETWOOD MAC, DEEP PURPLE, VAN HALEN.(phenominal player,in a class with people like bb king, the edge, chuck berry, changed the way the guitar is played original.) U2, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and DOUBLE TROUBLE (NOT ROCK but blues based like most rock.the greatest guitarists i have ever seen play),LYNYRD SKYNYRD and im sure PLENTY MORE. but there will not be any metallica or guns n roses on the list mainly because in no way shape or stretch of the imagination can metallica be mentioned in the same breath or same universe as Led Zeppelin and the others. there was just this led zeppelin started metal and metallica saved it or whatever thing going on. and as far as guns n roses being an honorable mention you can thank axl for that. talk about one of the blunders of rock n roll history. im on slash's side on that issue. page plant, tyler perry, axl slash you do the math. anyhow none of this really doesnt matter in the big scheme of things and my opinion doesnt mean that much. but please people trying to put a grunge band ( i do respect NIRVANA in some regards)in the top ten or your favorite band is like putting a tv beside the bath tub.and what happened to the times when people actually played instruments to make there music. no sorry no rap or hip hop on my list you have to make your own songs not borrow someone elses. but dont get me wrong i love some temptations motown, otis redding.....etc
Alright I'm pretty young (18), and i still have tons of rock to listen to before i can say i know much about rock. Heres some things i know for sure though:
-anyone who has Bon Jovi on their list is a brainwashed idiot who listens to the biggest sell-out in rock history.
-anyone who doesn't have The Who or Led Zeppelin on their list is an idiot.
-although i dont like them much, the Beatles do have a huge place in rock history.
-rock history repeats itself. the 70's was a golden age for rock (the who, led zeppelin, black sabbath, AC/DC), and then rock gradually became washed up, uncreative, and sell-out infected (Bon Jovi) by the late 80's. Then the Seattle 4 (i hope you all know who they are, if not you need to enlighten yourself) (ok, theyre Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains) brought rock back where it was supposed to be. Sadly it didnt last long, and sell-outs began dominating the charts (Creed), and eventually hip hop and crap like that took over. i'm rooting for a 3rd golden age.
hey all you older rock fans, give the seattle 4 another chance. I know you love your classic rock, and i do too, but try out Nevermind, In Utero, Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and Dirt.
In terms of record sell out concerts, U2 wins hands down. No.1 without a doubt.
Top 10:
1- Dream Theater
2- Stratovarius
3- Savatage
4- Yngwie Malmsteen
5- Symphony X
6- Pink Floyd
7- Deep Purple
8- Black Sabbath
9- Iron Maiden
10- Metallica
enough with "the beatles" and "led zeppelin".
they are good, but not like this one: PINK FLOYD

they are the best~!~!~!!
i think that not a lot of people like them because they are don't know more hits except "another brick in the wall, pt. 2", "comfortably numb", "money", "wish you were here", (they had a lot of better songs. they just did't like to become commercialized. what about "have a cigar", "time", "hey you", "coporal clegg"? that four songs are awesome and there are more billion great songs of the band).
another reason that people don't like pink floyd is because people don't like long songs (their best song in my opinion is echoes (23 minutes)).
everybody, listen to this legendary music, buy CD's and then you'll start to like them.
so, the list:
1) pink floyd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2) queen
3) the beatles
4) guns 'n' roses
5) elvis presley
6) depeche mode (i don't know if this is rock (i think that not) but i like them)
7) mike oldfield
8) the who
9) r.e.m
10) genesis
Syd Barret R.I.P!
Number 1 is Led Zeppelin, no doutb, and guys its spelled L-E-D Z-E-P-P-E-L-I-N, not Lead or Zeplin or Zepplin
I totally agree with anyone who says U2 as #1! but really, this is just stupid.. everybody has a different taste in music.
These are not necessarily the best bands but here are my favorites(in no particular order but the first two).
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. The Who
4. Nirvana
5. Pink Floyd
6. Queen
7. Van Halen
8. Rolling Stones
9. The Doors
10.The Eagles
The first of all was Bill Haley, not Elvis dude. And then I still mean the most famous one!
My favorite groups : The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Nirvana, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, Police, System of a Down, Rammstein, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Everly Brothers, Elvis, Buddy Holly, U2, Queen, Iggy Pop, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Who, Kinks, Guns Roses, Doors, Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, Blondie, REM, Clapton, Clash, Ozzy, Chuck Berry, Byrds, Dylan, Pearl Jam, and many many moore.... :p

1) *****THE KINKS***** - the most underated rock group ever, they have a great sound. just listen to them and you will agree. their influence on Punk rock and New Wave era The Jam and The Pretenders both covered Kinks songs1 and Britpop acts such as Blur, Oasis and Supergrass have cited them as a major influence.
2)The Beatles
3)Queen
4)The Rolling Stones
5)U2
6)Led Zeppelin
7)Pink Floyd
8)The Doors
9)Eagles
10)The who
when a band is still selling original music 27 years after their drummer dies (without being the first rock band ever) its pretty much a gimme they are the best ever
when a band is still selling original music 27 years after their drummer dies (without being the first rock band ever) its pretty much a gimme they are the best ever
sorry about twice
Putting U2 #3 ahead of Led Zeppelin and the Who being left off the list completely makes this "list" a complete joke.
I cant understand how some puts Rolling Stones over Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the two greatest rock bands ever in my opinion. Led Zeppelin, masters of the improvisations and solos, just wacht "Dazed and Confused" or "Moby Dick" live at Royal Albert Hall 1970; Pink Floyd, just listen "Shine on You crazy Diamond" "Wish you were here" or "Comfortably Numb" and u will understand.
My list is:
1- Led Zeppelin (best band in popular music history, not only rock)
2- Pink Floyd (Wish you were here)
3- The Beatles
4- AC/DC (Young Brothers forever)
5- Queen
6- Rolling Stones
7- Bob Marley and the Wailers (Marley, Tosh and Bunny Wayler, including I-Threes Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley creates one of the best and most influential rock band ever)
8- Dire Straits (God plays guitar with Mark Knopfler figure)
9- Jimi Hendrix experience
10-The Who
THE WHO is the best rock band ever. They define rock.

99 out of 100 people agree that they would like to kick Bon Jovi square in the balls...(if he has any)
Here's my list:

2. Radiohead
3. U2
4. Nirvana
5. Led Zeppelin
6. AC/DC
7. Metallica
8. Smashing Pumpkins
9. Alice in Chains
10. Soundgarden
wow that list sucks half those bands had hardly any influence to speak of... and any list without the who is not worth reading... but for originality's sake, here's my list, of some of the greatest songs by some of the best bands.

6. The Doors
7. Jimi Hendrix Experience
8. Nirvana

10. CCR
Lots of others that were mentioned above (Pink Floyd, Dylan, etc) are AMAZING but don't necessarily fit exactly under the genre of "Rock and Roll" I so excluded them.
ok i would like to say that although i m new to classic rock i cannot blive that first of all...#56..although i was the biggest green day fan for like a year and blink-182 are both awesum bands...u could never put them b4 the beatles or acdc..it just isnt right..green day belongs on the punk list..not rock..and #59 i think that u r one in a million no1 in the entire world except u would ever say that the beatles don't belong on the list..and you can never say that freddy mercury hasnt had an impact on music..i havent listened to much judas priest so i can't argue yet..i may not b as experienced as the rest of u but i do no that rock is rock and there is no way around that..u have to have a good drummer and awesum guitar solos...i cant give a list but it would definately include...(in no order) queen,aerosmith,nirvana,beatles,ac/dc,jimi hendrix, the ramones etc...but whoever put bryan adams on their list has major issues...dont blame me for forgetting great bands like rush, rolling stones and so on..but i m new the classic rock scene..i like boston a lot but i no that they dont belong on the list...i m stuck on kiss becuase i cant decide if they deserve to be on even though many people blive that they sold out...all of the people at my school hardly ever listen to new rock..and i am becoming one of them...you either like rap or classic rock..and i for one will not listen to rap...calssic rock is the only rock that will stay foever..none of todays bands will veer have impact..they are around for a year or two then just fall away from the stage and go into the land of the one hit wonder
Alright i have no idea who in the right mind would put Bryan Adams and RHCP on their list. But this is a list i made of the most influential and record sale wise...
1. Of course.. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Led FRICKIN Zeppelin!!!
4. Bob Dylan
5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
6. Pink Floyd
7. AC/DC
8. The Ramones (not a huge fan but influenced punk a helluva lot.)
9. Aerosmith
10. And i guess U2 even though im not a fan.
Thats a list i agree with. Best band ever is Zeppelin though. Hands down.
Damn i forgot the Who. Well the who is in there somewhere. Even though ive lost a little respect for Pete...
LAST THING! WHY CANT ANYONE SPELL!!! LYNYRD SKYNYRD! NOT LYNARD SKYNARD! DAMN!!!! It was named after their gym teacher. Leanord Skinner.
1. beatles

4. Led zeppelin
5. queen
6. Pink floyd
7. jimi hendrix experience
8. ac/dc

Here is the real list:
1. The Beatles - highest selling (over a billion discs, tapes etc.), amazing musicians, amazing albums, defined rock and roll, incredibly popular
2. Led Zeppelin - Pioneered heavy metal and influenced dozens of successful bands and artists, over 300 mil sold worldwide, amazing musicians, incredible album moving, did alot in just a decade
3. Black Sabbath - Along with zeppelin paved the way for hard rock and heavy metal, punding riffs from Tomm Iommi and great showmanship from Ozzy, true rockers.
4. AC/DC - Amazing guitar riffs and solos from Angus Young and Malcom Young, one of few bands to survive after losing an almost irreplacable Bon Scott, amazing album sales, Brian Johnson and Bon Scott are both on the world's best fontmen list, still popular today and are still selling out arenas globally, stay true to their original stuff, amazing live, Back In Black is world's highest selling album from a band and second highest of all time and considered pioneers of rock.
5. Rolling Stones - Still selling out arenas globally 40 years after forming, longest lasting rock band ever, great songs, Mick Jagger is one of the best fontmen ever.
6. Deep Purple - Hands down pioneers of heavy metal, great album sales and amazing guitarist and drummer, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice.
all the lists above and msnbc list have a problem i guess everybody's rock understanding is diffrent as much as i read thats why these weird groups are gettin in your lists like RHCP REM AC/DC aerosmith
the list is about the sound even some one not know the list about have to say these ar rock bands after listened them and i have couple of words about msnbc list give me a break !!! and number tenth song is hey ya are you kiddin me ha ? RRRRRR

beatles, the
doors, the
guns & roses
led zeppelin
metallica
nirvana
pink floyd
rolling stones, the
who, the
van halen
there are other great groups too but these band ruled the rock style, fashion, life style and all other ways of rock and list says that its about bands not rock stars so leave rocker boys out of your list
another thing about my list i think pink floyd could be out of it because of their sound but my heart not excepts it :)
so i think these guys ruled the rock world so they have to share the first place you can not put one behind others you can listens them for hours an not get bored and hours probably not enough for even one of them :)
According to www.rankopedia.com Led Zeppelin is the best rock band ever, with a comfortable edge on ACDC.
there is no way to put a dot to this conversation i guess but i just dont feel comfortable when i select the number one
but mine is definetly the doors because of jim. world never seen some one like him and never will again and for me singer is most important part of the band
jim was poetic, hypnotic and more he has his own style on the stage and off the stage and ofcourse there is a manzerek factor too his notes was out of this world for me.
maybe none of you is agree with me but this is what i think their rock style was never seen and never will.
in my own idea they were out of this world with their style...

BEATLES: Cursory Summary of Some of their Significant Influences and Precedents
Social/Cultural
- caused cultural (as well as musical) upheaval
- made RnR central to youth's lives
- globalize RnR to extent previously unknown
- appearance: most visibly, introduce fashion of long hair through "Beatle haircut" (made obligatory)
- attitude: make it fashionable to be cute, smart, irreverent, eclectic, chic, cultured etc.
- fostered through personal appearances in which musical act now are non-threatening in earlier tradition of EPresley, JLLewis, LRichard; (but are "threatening" to youth in their seductive, influential nature)
- fostered through movies: Hard Day's Night and Help, which allowed fans an "up-close-and-personal" view of Beatles, with appeal of movies e.g. (1) bringing "beach-genre" movies to close, (2) causing creation of spin-off group "Monkees", (3) inspiring future folk-rocker Roger McGuinn to purchase Rickenbacker 12- string guitar just like one seen in movie, etc.
- overall, Beatles convey attitude: "Be yourself, don't let anybody tell you how to run your life"
- success lifts UK out of lingering post-WW2 doldrums, helps to redefine UK (ironic in that UK authority/press reject US RnR from beginning)
- help to reshape RnR into "Rock": music that is capable of introducing serious social issues into the mainstream and though that becomes more than mere commercial entertainment (as is Pop)
Musical
- renders much of existing USA RnR (esp Rockabilly, Phil. Mach., doo wop, pre-Motown girl groups, etc) out of style during initial introduction in 1964
- intense appeal of music revives bland/stultified pop market, success set up environment for British Invasion
- lay foundation for "arena rock," with their 1965 performance in Shea Stadium (NYC) entertaining 55,000 fans, demonstrating their intense appeal
- Beatles helped set in motion a maturation process for RnR, ultimately ending with their contribution for establishing "Rock" by proving that RnR could be conduit for significant message re culture/society: in process they expanded to embrace topics and musical style formerly excluded from RnR genre
- expansion in full bloom on Revolver '66: "Taxman"protest about rapacious taxation by UK govt, "Eleanor Rigby" reflecting on emptiness of life and religious ritual, melody set to string quartet (no trad. rock insts), "Love To You"-- introduction of subcontinent Indian musical style (raga) and instruments (tabla and sitar), "Tomorrow Never Knows"-- Lennon advocation for opening one's mind to new experience, exploiting technical innovations (see technical)
- music sets new artistic and commercial standards for future RnR (the "yardstick" by which every group will be measure in '60s and into '70s)
- sets trend for bands establishing and maintaining artistic control over their music:
- inaugurate era of "self-contained" band (inspiring thousands to pick up guitars and imitate them)
- help to reestablish trend that artists compose songs for themselves: bands now expected (by fans) to create own material; redirects song-writing trend away from centralized, production-line, professional song-writing concept indicative of Brill Bldg
- set trend for bands to record their music themselves
- in all, establishing many aspects of "DIY" trend, which becomes measure of authority
- accorded credit for creating new style of album with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band: "concept album," in which songs can be seen to relate to one central topic or idea
- helps establish "album" rather than "single" as industry standard
- seen as pushing Beatle creativity into realm of classical music: Pepper's songs now contain stylistic diversity and artistic sophistication to be considered equivalent to Romantic "art-song" and album equivalent to Romantic "song cycle" by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, etc
- seen as early pioneers of music video with promotional film for "SFF", also sections of HDN
- said to start (but re-introduce) concept of double A-side single
Music Technology/Creative Process
- begin to create exclusively in studio (retire from touring in 12/66)
- first successful band to do so, set trend for future bands
- pioneer new techniques to maintain creative/innovative musical style
- begin to rely on creativity of studio technicians/producer:
- E.g. ADT (artificial double tracking ["flanging"]) created to ease problematic vocal double-tracking process for JLennon, comes into wide-spread use on instruments in future albums
- E.g. Lennon's request that G Martin combine two "uncombinable" versions of "Strawberry Fields Forever"
- E.g. subjecting voices, instruments to unusual electronic modifications (limiters, etc) to produce sophisticated, inimitable "sound"
- explore innovative, avant-garde techniques (formerly unused in RnR)
- E.g. musique concrete--modification of sound through unconventional techniques: tape loops used in "Tomorrow..", steam calliope 'wash' used to help create circus atmosphere in "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite"
- E.g. Aleatoric approach toward creating orchestral crescendos in "Day In A Life"
- E.g. avant-garde influence in "Revolution No. 9"
- experimentation is so pervasive that nearly every subsequent technique used in Rock can be traced to precedent in Beatles music
- first significant group to achieve "verticality" in business through Apple Corp. (i.e controlling all significant aspects of their business (from songwriting to recording to movies etc. through an in-house/self-contained entity)

I have a lot of favorite rock groups. Some of them are from decades ago, some have only just become well known.
I couldn't give a definitive numerical order to my favorite bands and artists; actually, some of the folks on my list are well known in other musical styles, too!
Well, these are some of my favorite acts-and this list is in no way meant to demean or insult anyone else's list. Anyway, the following is an abbreviated version of my list: TOP 10 AND THEN SOME
1.The Beatles,2. The Rolling Stones,3. Jimi Hendrix Experience 4.Led Zeppelin,5. Pink Floyd,6. Santana, 7.Deep Purple, 8. The Who, 9. The Kinks, 10.(tie) Black Sabbath, 10.(tie)Rush, James Brown, Metallica, 10 years after, The Four Tops, Temptations, Nirvana,

4.Cinderella
5.Def Leppard
6.Aerosmith
7.Guns and Roses
8.Led Zep
9.Motley Crue
10.Black Sabbath
No Beatles, no British Invasion, No Yardbirds = no Led Zeppelin. No Beatles no Byrd's, no Dylan going electric = No Folk Rock. No Beatles = Elvis wannbees instead of the rock group being bigger than the solo act. The Beatles are number one.
Holy crap, how has nobody mentioned THE EAGLES?!?!?! I'm not saying they're the best, but they were pretty darn good man. Didn't have the best guitar player, but quite possibly was the BEST COLLECTION of guitarists in one band ever. My List:
1) The Beatles
2) Led Zeppelin
3) The Who
4) Pink Floyd
5) Jimi Hendrix Experience & Jimi Hendrix
6) Rolling Stones
7) The Cream & Eric Clapton
8) The Eagles
9) The Clash
10) Queen
The other that I would mention, but wouldn't list because this is a best rock GROUPS list, is BOB DYLAN. Simply Amazing.
OK, no two ways about this. The Beatles are OVER RATED!!! If you like Michael Jackson, the Beatles are great. Their bee-boppy garbage is for 12 year olds. They do have a couple real rock songs like Revolution, Helter Skelter. As yes, I know most Beatles songs, not just the few.
As for me, it's all STONES. They were, are, and will always be bad ass. They don't sing crap like I Wanna Hold Your Hand. They sing Let's Spend the Night Together. They don't pretend with crap like Judy in the Skies, they sing Sister Morphine. It's all real. None of that howdy-dowdy crap.
Zep should be way up there too as well as Floyd, Aerosmith, The Who, The Guess Who, Hendrix.
The Beatles should maybe make the top 20, maybe.
I've hardly ever heard of Sly and the family stone OR Velvet underground. Im not sure why they are on the top 10 best ever list.
This is my list of most important bands... not a list of my favorites.
1.)Led Zeppelin
2.)Nirvana
3.)Pink Floyd
4.)Jimi Hendrix Experience
5.)The Rolling Stones
6.)The Who

Rock music is such a little world. How many of these bands really mean all that much outside of their own little bubble?
The Beatles for a whole range of musical and cultural reasons must surely be the best and most important band ever.
But I'm quite frankly surprised at the apparent lack of appreciation for U2's music and the extent of what they have achieved as a band.
Technically gifted musicians? No certainly not compared to The Beatles or Led Zeppelin etc. But their best music has soundscapes easily as creative as The Beatles and far more original than the derivative aspect of Led Zep. U2's best music has emotional and musical depths that The Beatles frankly never even came close to discovering.
Don't get me wrong, I love Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Beatles, The Kinks, Pink Floyd and a lot of other classic rock bands. But U2 are still a creative and driven group after more than 25 years, and still a hell of a lot more culturally relevant than The Rolling Stones are. In fact U2 are one of the very few bands who have actually taken seriously the challenge that those great 60's bands made to western culture, and have actually bothered to advance and evolve those ideals through their music and live concerts into todays very different world.
And what is often overlooked is U2's integrity and impact on the music industry. While most other bands in the 80's were busy brill creaming their hair and making sure their makeup looked OK, U2 helped open up the radio waves and during the 1980's to less mainstream bands that came through in the 90's.
Yes I know Bono can make you gag sometimes when he gets in your face, but he is the first to admit that. Folks could learn a lot both musically and artistically if they bothered to scratch a bit below the surface of things.
top 10 bands
1.Led Zeppelin

The top ten most influential rock artists. Why confine the influence to an individual or band.
Factors involved - period of influence in rock, how little lowest common denominator factors like image should count. Yers, it is rock and this does feature in most minds but I'm going on meritorious album releases and concert performances. Image works for disposable pop, so must be discounted, let the music do the talking.
Other factors such as the impact on contemporary mores and the public (as opposed to musicians). Really it is down to pioneering new ideas and expressing values for freedom. This means few acts in te past 30 years make it as they frankly have been extensions of the pioneers rather than something original from their influences.
Popularity is not enough; enduring worth has to be present and consistent through 90% of the catalogue.
The all time top ten as I can as objectively as possible, express it.
1. Led Zeppelin (12 years, 10 releases, 550 concerts and maximum consistent impact everywhere). The ultimate rock band who shied away from projecting an image. Hard to credit now but it was impossible to get anything from this band once they were off the road. The concert attraction, the albums, the songs, musicianship and production)
2. Pink Floyd (42 years - with time off for disagreeable behaviour along with the most popular head trip music ever).
3. The Who / Yardbirds tie (43 years / 7 years and Clapton Beck and Page - I can't in fact Page, Plant and the Who still share management...)
4. Black Sabbath (38 years - more or less... The band that defined metal and got it all right. Very progressive, intelligent complex arrangements)
5. Rolling Stones (45 years hardly a foot wrog on 60s tunes unlike the album, but they would improve as that art form did and compelling concert attraction)
6. Bob Dylan (47 years - the words and the albums)
7. The Doors (5 years - those albums and his poetry, sometimes suspect in his books but not on the albums)
8. Jimi Hendrix (5 years and wrote the book on how to play electric guitar.)
9. Yes (39 years - outsold Zeppelin for concerts - the most imaginative major key virtuosoes ever). So tempting to put Rush here... but Yes were first.
10. Cream (2 years of activity only. But they resonate even now...)
Why no Beatles? First their phenomenal impact was due to a certain novelty act value. Certainly they represented in the public mind social impact. But where were they without George Martin? and EMI backing (paying for) a marketable phenomenon. They went with the times but dated. No instrumentalist that could not be replicated easily by anyone else. Really they were probably the most significant pop group ever, just look at the common factors with every pop fad since.
Why no Southern American rock act? I know, no number 11 to put the Allmans or Skynyrd into. If it was a top ten concert attractions (Allmans) or classic song feature (Skynyrd) then sure they would feature.
Why no Jethro Tull, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis. Tull for concert appearances and a great run of albums and sheer persistence of talent but public perception wavers. Most bravest album releases (A Passion Play).
King Crimson for one of the most significant debuts and in the 1990s the most death defying musical act ever. But who knew?
ELp? US tours with full orchestra? Most outrageous music but had little impact in ensuing years. Genesis became a pop group.
The socially significant rock acts - Pistols, Ramones, Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, U2, The first 2 had novelty value but imagine the Pistols trying to create a 2nd LP. Radiohead took all their best ideas from European acts like Univers Zero, Magma, Art Zoyd, Henry Cow and didn't tell anyone. Scared to expand a piece instrumentally as well.OK Computer not OK after all. Pearl Jam are close but as significant as the Stones? Globally for many years? Top ten 1990s but not quite all time. U2 have a formula and they are best with it. Very earnest, can't imagine this Christan act as one for rock excess. Good hearted bunch but musically limited. Some good tunes and fine albums there though.
No Kiss, Aerosmith, Guns And Roses? Kiss (whom I loved as a kid) are a hard rock Beatles, but terrific tunes and Ace Frehley is not quite enough. They're a Top 10 concert attraction though. Aerosmith - fall into the trap of being Zep, Who, Yardbirds influenced but not really doing anything different but being a superb and logical extension. Great albums though.
Guns And Roses? 3 decent tracks on the debut and a scattering of others is nowhere near enough. Image ruled here I'm afraid.
So no ACDC and Motorhead as they are hard rock specialists only. Acoustic sets from these guys? Innovations anyone? Lemmy (like the better than Pistols PIL vocalist Lydon is a superb lyricist (although horrible singer).
1950s acts. Very innovative but not a lot of albums (they had not changed those times, that was up to the Beatles.) Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly - great songs, Berry still tours but innovative? No albums to prove it. Elvis did not exactly write the songs either - a country singer with a keen manager. Bill Haley had not realised what he had created either.
There're the politically significant - Airplane, Dead,. But their impact was a consequence of the times not the other way around. Honorable mention to the greatest unknown US band - Spirit. (They came up with the Stairway intro - Taurus (but not the jazz section) and Page improved on it). Zeppelin used to cover Fresh Garbage and that rhythm track was used by pop singer Pink for a whole track in 06. She didn't use the jazz section either.
Queen and Bowie? Tempting. Very popular and long lasting more than Cream, The Doors, Hendrix. Quite innovative, loads of terrific albums and tunes. Bit dependent on image so close but no cigar.
No Bob Marley (reggae's greats act), George Clinton (Funk master) or the blues greats (Muddy Waters, Wolf, Albert King, John Lee Hooker et al) All hugely influential musically but a bit like the 50s rockers, not many albums. A few abut not in the same influential league as Graffiti or Electric Ladyland or Dark Side.)
The band that mutates from album to album, that are the most significant head trip with rock lyrics in a prog genre. Porcupine Tree would be there but have no public perception beyond a dedicated fan base.
My top 10 FWIW
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Pink Floyd
3. King Crimson
4. Jethro Tull
5. Rush
6. Jimi Hendrix
7. Roy Harper
8. Eric Clapton
9. Jeff Beck
10. Porcupine Tree
ok, so im a huge Pink Floyd band, because while other bands created great music, what Pink Floyd did was more of an art than any other band. And if people create their lists based on influence, they are retarted if they dont include floyd. They were their own sound, no one even came near to what they sounded like. They defined Progressive Rock. however, to me, these would be the most popular and greatest bands ever.
1. The Beatles- They created the genre
2. The Rollingstones- 40 years and still selling out arenas
3. Pink Floyd- my personal number 1 but this is where they should belong on a definite list.
4. The Who- saw them live a couple months ago and Pete and Roger are one of the greatest duos. The music is just amazing, Emminance Front being a personal favorite. Its to bad they lost the ox and moon the loon. Plus, no band has more songs in commercials. :)
5. Jimi Hendrix(experience)- greatest guitarest ever easily. He created solos. nuff said.
6. Led Zepplain- the number of hits theyve had is staggering, and is almost the first band that every kid learns of and likes. They made great music, no matter if they stole some songs from r and b artists.
7. Boston- much to underappreciated. Peace of Mind is amazing and so is alot more of their music. I dont no a single person who doesn't like their music, it just sounds so good.
8.Deep Purple - maybe even more than Led Zep, they created the hard rock but not crappy metallic type of music. Richie Blackmore is easily top 5 or 10 guitarists ever and Ian Gillens vocals are crazy.
9. Clapton/Cream - definatly shoulda been included earlier on, say 4, 5, or 6 but i forgot. Top 3 guitarest ever, and not one person who claims to like classic rock doesn't no the riff to Layla. And he still plays and makes great music today.
10. Dire Straights - Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing. Two of the greatest songs ever, esp Sultans. Mark Knopler is an amazing guitarest and have a very unique, layed back sound.
ones i forgot but could be interchanged and definatly would be the next 10 (no order).
Creedence Clearwater Revival(could be 9 or 10 easily)
allman brothers
queen
genesis(who hoo for reunions!)
the police
the doors
the doobie brothers (China Grove!)
U2
Bob Marely
Elvis(just because he owned the 50s, althought i dont persoanlly like him)
I think the Rolling Stones are the most over-rated band ever surpassed perhaps only by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (just listen to the maddeningly monotonous drums on "Born in the USA" to go along with the appropiately meaningless lyrics, I might add...just for one example).
I am a Boston fan as well as a Rush fan. I don't hear them mentioned enough in anyone's "top ten", although they are certainly in mine. Pink Floyd undeniably deserves to be in my top ten.
The Beatles broke new ground musically even before they became really "edgy" for their time. They deserve some credit for ushering in the modern rock era (say Elvis Presley does and I'll throw up!). We should really forgive them for being "sappy" before anything more would be played on radios around the world. I believe that their legacy lives on to this day, so I have no problem with them (posthumously, as it were for some of them) being in anyone's top ten even though I myself was never a huge fan.
But Led Zeppelin? How the hell does anyone with any grip on the rock music scene of the last 50 years or so not include Led Zeppelin in their top three (to say nothing of top-ten)??? What ONE rock ballad consistently tops the all-time list? Right, Stairway to Heaven. Everyone knows that. But anyone who counts that among Led Zeppelin's FEW hits simply hasn't been paying attention. Come on. The space available here, to say nothing of my time, precludes my listing them all. Led Zeppelin is easily top three...to say nothing of top ten...if not the greatest ever.
BTW, my top ten:
1. Rush
2. Boston
3. Led Zeppellin
4. Pink Floyd
5. The Beatles
6. The Police
7. Journey
8. Def Leppard
9. Chevelle
10. T-The Beatles
Queen
I guess that shows a little about where I'm coming from. Popularity amounts to nothing as far as I'm concerned. As far as I'm concerned it comes down to nothing less than musical talent. Sorry to you Beatles or Queen fans, but I had to throw Chevelle in their at nine...and only that low since they haven't been around that long yet.
BTW, having said that, there are musicians not listed above who I believe to be very talented but whom I do not consider "rock" musicians by any typical definition. So don't come back with "pop" or "R&B" artists (just to name a couple different genres) saying they were better. In many respects some were...but I am limiting my list to what I consider to be "rock bands".
Sorry. I didn't proofread my list well enough. I already listed the Beatles at number five, and deservedly so I think. Change number ten above to Toto and drop Queen down to number eleven, which essentially drops them down outside the scope of this discussion.
BTW, it occurs to me that, this being an international site after all, some of you may not have ever heard of Chevelle. They aren't widely known even inside the US, so I can only imagine that they are even less known ouside of North America. Still, I like their stuff so much that I could not leave them off my list.
i think divlje jagode one of most popular yugoslovaan band and one best rock roll band visit this site www.divljejagode.com thx by dj harix

4 ac/dc

The Beatles pioneers in
1. British Invasion
2. Jangle Pop

Along the way if you listen to today's rock music. The most dominant form of type of artists in rock music. Rock bands who write there own music and concentrate on making albums. Who is most responsible in making that the norm not Queen or Zeppelin it's the Beatles.
1. Beatles
2. Aerosmith
3. Led Zeppelin
4. The Rolling Stones
5. Kiss
6. Def Leppard
7. Bon Jovi
8. Red Hot Chili Peppers
9. Queen
10. Creed
Why the fuck does everyone think the Beatles are the "greatest rock band of all time?" It's true they might be the most influential as to Rock n' Roll itself, but you need to judge a band on other aspects as well. Led Zeppelin on the other hand did not have as great of an influence on Rock, but when it comes to the other aspects, such as artistic merit, Led Zeppelin completely blows the Beatles out of the water. I'd like to see the Beatles perform a near 25 minute long drum solo live. . .
Don't you think that a 25-minute drum solo is kind of a subjective criterion. If you agree that the Beatles are the most influential and you agree, as you seem to, that "everyone think[s] the Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time." then doesn't that mean that they are, in fact, the greatest? That doesn't mean that they are--or ought to be-- your favorite (though they are mine).
The most original song I have ever heard is The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows. You have acid house, trance dance music and techno all in a psychedelic song. Then you have Helter Skelter one of the first metal songs.
These are my best bands:
1. The Velvet Underground
2. Led Zepplin
3. The Doors
4. The Libertines
5. The Beatles
6. The White Stripes
7. The Mars Volta
8. Nine Inch Nails
9. The Beach Boys
And in my views, bands should write their own music.
Also in my views,
The Velvet Underground have the best songs (Heroin, Venus in Furs)
The Mars Volta are the most experimental and are miles ahead of any other band.
Nine Inch Nails are just great.
The Doors, I think are the most interesting.
The Libertines are great, and alot of people discard them because they are new.
Thank You.
By the way....
I know that I did not include Queen and this is why:
Their songs are good, but as they are so gimmicky, you love them one minute and eventually grow out of them.
Freddie Mercury was an amazing singer, just not a good enough song writer.
The Beatles - Love Me Do (Power Pop)
This one is fairly easy, but the precise use of harmony, chiming guitars and a soaring, easy to understand chorus about love is basically the blueprint of every power-pop band to ever exist, from the Raspberries and Big Star to Sloan and Superdrag. This song might not be the first to combine all these factors, but it was the first time anybody did it better than anybody else.
The Beatles - I’m a Loser (Slack/Indie Rock/Emo)
Before Beck, Radiohead and Sunny Day Real Estate came along and snivelled about their own self loathing, the Beatles showed that you could be self-deprecating way back in the early ’60s.
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows (Techno/Electronica/Kraut Rock)
Combining swirling psychedelia with a repetitive melody and wicked sound effects, “Tomorrow Never Knows†could possibly be the first and only Beatles song that could put you in a trance and make you shake that thang simultaneously. The Chemical Brothers didn’t sample and loop the drum track and bassline from this song for nothing.
The Beatles - A Day in the Life (Prog Rock)
Before this song was released in 1967, combining two songs in one was completely unheard of (not to mention its risky running time of 5 minutes and 33 seconds). A few years later, Yes, King Crimson, and even later, the Mars Volta, wouldn’t exist without the Beatles taking the dive into
Why has no one mentioned The Clash? I agree with most of the stuff on this list and I have no idea why people are naming bands like Lincon Park and dumb new bands like that. Green Day and RHCP will be on this list eventually but they havent established themselves yet. My top ten is:
1. Beatles
2. Rolling Stones
3. Led Zeppelin
4. U2
5. The Clash
6. Velvet Underground
7. The Who
8. Nirvana
9. The Doors
10. Jimi Hendrix
Thank you to all who hate the beatles, u2, bon jovi, queen, and the police. What the hell are 30 seconds to mars and the peppers doin on some of your lists? They're not in any particular order, but they're the best:
1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Aerosmith
4. Van Halen
5. AC/DC
6. Pink Floyd
7.Jimi Hendrix/Experience
8. Guns N' Roses/Def Leppard
9. Iron Maiden
10. Metallica
Sure, its a bit all over the place, but its the best. Van Halen and AC/DC have the most songs that we would ever like to listen to. Thunderstruck, Back In Black, Hell's Bells, Shoot to Thrill, Who Made Who, Moneytalks, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, You Shook Me All Night Long, Highway to Hell, T.N.T, and For those about to rock(we salute you). Eruption, Runnin With the devil, jump, aint talkin bout love, dance the night away, and the cradle will rock, dreams, poundcake, i cant stop lovin you, amsterdam, and you really got me now. I know some of you out there have brains and know what im talking about
Nirvana is way more influential than pearl jam
Hate the Beatles? I'm going to assume that either a) you are being deliberately contrarian or b) you've never heard Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, the White Album, or Abby Road. Otherwise, the existence of philistinism that profound is simply too disturbing to contemplate.
I have played guitar and keyboards in various bands from 1972 until 1992. I now own a recording studio. I constantly ask the younger musicians today, "who influenced you?" You would be surprised by some of the answers. Heres my list:
1. The Beatles-Lennon/McCartney probably the best song writers in history. For those of you who don't think the Beatles should be number one, here are a few things to consider. Listen to how their early music slowly evolved from Do-Wop/Blues to the drug induced experimental music of 1965 to 1970. The first to use strings, the first to use tape loops, i.e. backwards guitar sounds and backward cymbals. Vocal harmonies that sound great without any instruments. Most record sales ever. Most number one singles. Most songs done over by other musicians. Listen to a song like "Eleanor Rigby", there are no drums, no Bass, no guitars. Only a string quartet was used and you would never realize it without listening very carefully.
The next bands you could put in any order. They have all influenced musicians right up to today.
Led Zeppelin-They wanted to bring the blues to another level. They combined their blues influences into the first heavy metal band. Four world class musicians. John Paul Jones was very underrated. Plant, Page and Bonham all could be in someones top five list for Rock Singers, Guitar Players and Drummers.
The Rolling Stones- Individually, they were not very good musicians. As a whole, they were incredible. Everything meshes together. Another blues influenced band. Less metal sounding than Zeppelin. I consider them the first Punk Band.
The Who-Power Quartet like Zeppelin. Another Band with World class top 5 musicians. A little more on the edge. The rock opera Tommy is a classic.
Pink Floyd- Although the Beatles, Zeppelin and The Who did some experimental music, they couldn't compare to Floyd. The guitar playing of Gilmour combined with another band of top musicians has never been duplicated. The keyboard sounds were 10 years before its time.
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Eddie Van Halen
All three had an unmistakeable sound/style that other guitar players could only dream about.
The Doors-Jim Morrison, the poet. Morrison was a story teller and a madman. A band with no bass player. Their keyboard player was so good playing bass lines on the organ, they did't need a bass player.
Aerosmith-The greatest American Rock Band ever. Hands down. More hits than any other American Band.
Rush-Probably the best musicians in any band still playing today. Power trio. 23 albums.
The Moody Blues and YES- Took classical music and made it rock. Both groups have world class musicians.
AC/DC- Unmistakeable sound, even with two different singers. Hells Bells stilled used to start NFL games.
All these bands have such a distinct sound that they influenced musicians even today.
First of all, enough with AC/DC and Queen. In no way are they even close to the top 10. Secondly, to all you idiots who think you know southern rock, their correct spelling is LYNYRD SKYNYRD. I don't know how many times I've seen it spelled wrong. I may be a little young at 16, but so far, this is the most accurate list of the greatest bands of all time.
1: Guns N' Roses
2: Lynyrd Skynyrd (R.I.P. Ronnie)
3: Led Zeppelin
4: Creedence Clearwater Revival
5: Van Halen
6: Kiss
7: The Eagles
8: Pantera
9: Iron Maiden
10:*The Beatles*
Every one of these bands have brought a new way of life to ROCK. The Beatles made an early impact, yes, but none greater than these guys. These bands are original, and deserve to be on this list. Shout out to my heroes Ronnie and Axl.
My list of MOST INFLUENTIAL (Not Best) I'm doing influential because, well, the best for me changes, the most influential is pretty set
1. The Beatles (Created rock as we know it)
2. Led Zepplin (Deep, dark heavy, real rock)
3. Rolling Stones (Vamped rock, taking it to new places)
4. Queen (huge hits, highly influential, cross genre)
5. Pink Floyd (experimental, new sounds)
6. The Who (rock opera, huge hits)
7. Black Sabbath (metal)
8. Nirvana (every band nowadays)
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers
10. The Clash (punk)
These lists need some shake-up. No doubt, sujectivity plays a role in this. However, I have not just listed my favorite bands in order. Some of the bands on this list I do not even like.
1a. Genesis with Steve Hackett (best song writing, best musicianship, best live performances, and best overall songs)
1b. Genesis without Steve Hackett (same reasons just down a notch)
2. The Beatles (for Sgt. Peppers & Magical Mystery Tour alone)
3. The Greatful Dead (Not just a band, a way of life)
4. Emmerson, Lake and Palmer (I cannot believe no one else included "The Supergroup")
5. The Kinks (A band that was playing rock and roll in the beginning and all through disco - and playing it well)
6. The Talking Heads (best that the New Wave brought forth in the waste left by disco)
7. The Clash (the best of punk).
8. Spirit (perhaps the best California Band from the 1960's with music that has aged better than any other band's music has from that period)
9. The Allman Brothers (invented southern rock and perfected blues rock)
10.Blue Oyster Cult (the most impressive of the 1970's metal/guitar dominated bands)
11-20 for giggles
11. Yes (complexity and melodies)
12. Led Zepplin (attitude and rythms)
13. Jefferson Airplane (lyrics and originality)
14. AC/DC (energy)
15. Pink Floyd (innovation)
16. Rush (musicianship)
17. Red Hot Chili Peppers (song mixes)
18. Cream (pure influence and song quality)
19. Ween (innovation and melodies)
20. Tool or Dream Theater (complex metal)
1-The Beatles 2-Genesis 3-Jethro Tull 4-The Alan Parsons Project 5-The Moody Blues 6-The Rolling Stones 7-Emerson Lake &Palmer-8-Gentle Giant 9-Camel 10-Tears for Fears.

Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Porcupine Tree, Soundgarden, Styx, Kansas. Enough Said.
There are a lot of great bands and yes the beatles were breakthrough, but don't sit there and tell me tool is not in the top 10. Yes it seems like these days rock has deteriorated to nothing but horrible repititive sh*t but tool does not deserve to be placed with them. They are the most phenomenal band of today or ever IMO. And The rolling stones before Pink Floyd? Give me a break. The stones have a few very good songs but they can't even compare to Pink Floyd. Every band I see on that list is classic rock aside from U2 which is the biggest load of sh*t I'ver ever seen. They're kind of classic rock, history-wise but they should never be considered one of the best bands in history. A lot of bands get overlooked these days because of the overwhelming flood of sh*t on the radio. Such bands as Tool and Porcupine Tree. They are great bands with great music and it saddens me to see not many recognize it. Other honorable mentions, Alice in Chains (how much more badass rock could you ask for?), Blind Melon (Unique songs), Pearl Jam (An almost classic rock new band from the 90s, Soundgarden (wicked guitar and vocals). Don't get me wrong, the beatles and led zeppelin are definitely amazing bands but you shouldn't leave these others in the shadows, especially Tool who should go down as the most breathrough band in the history of music.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. WHERE THE F*CK ARE THE DOORS? You want a great classic rock band, The Doors definitely deserve their spot.
I am glad to see that I am not the only one who was shocked about The Who's absence from this list. They are in the top 5 no questions about it.
I didn't read every comment in detail, saw one mention of David Bowie and I realize he was probably eliminated by this being a "band" thing, but he would be in there, rather than Sly and the Family Stone.

3- AC/DC
4-KISS
5-DEFF LEPPARD
6-Aerosmith
7-Van Helen
8-Airbourne
9-Pink Floyed
10- Nirvana
This list is seriously of target. For a start, despite The Rolling Stones obvious technical talent and influence, any band who charges 1 million pounds for a 2 hour set at Glastonbury is not a real rocker. Period. U2 as the 3rd greatest rock band of all time? Give me a break man, I wouldnt even put them in my top 10 let alone top 5 or top 3! Why? Because they haven't been all that influential for their popularity and no member is particularly outstanding in terms of "greatness". As a whole they have written some great songs and they have sold a colossal amount of records but not top 10 material mate. Sorry. Besides, they road the MTV train all the way to the bank and wrote alot of "shite" songs to. I'm just some 15 year old so I don't know much about The Grateful Dead, but, either way, I have read about bands for years now and I really know my stuff and I haven't even heard of anyone influenced by The Grateful Dead. I've heard of more bands influenced by U2 and you know what I just said about them don't you. The Velvet Underground is a tricky one because they have influenced alot of people but only had 1, maaayyybbbeee 2 great albums. I'd say top 15, not top 5. Led Zeppelin at number 6!? What the hell!? How about number 2 please but I don't even like The Beatles so in all I think they should have topped this list. Stairway to Heaven alone earns them this crown, literally. The Ramones...nah. Maybe in influence but I don't see a bunch of drugged up, 3 chord punks being the 7th greatest band ever. Not bias though, I do like alot of their stuff. Pink Floyd in my opinion are probably a bit high for my liking but that doesn't matter, leave them there because they do deserve it. Bob Marley? Dude you must love him alot to use The Wailers as an excuse to put him on this list. Not good enough, even if he was in a band. Sly and the Family Stone, WTF? Dude it's probably a great list to you, but this is my opinion.
1. The Smiths
2. Led Zeppelin
3. AC/DC
4. The Who
5. The Stone Roses
Off the top of my head.
the 6 best bands are, in no particular order:
Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Queen.
this is my list:
1)The Beatles
2)The Rolling Stones
3)Led Zeppelin
4)The Who
5)Pink Floyd
6)Queen
7)Nirvana (I don't emphasize this pick considering they were Grunge)
8)Elvis Presley (should be higher prolly)
9)David Bowie
10)The Doors
1-u2
2-rem
3-iron maiden
4-helloween
5-system of a down
6-queen
7-scorpions
8-mano negra
9-baron rojo
10.....
i hate the doors, stones and beatles.....
1.Beatles
2.Stones
3.Who
4.Kinks
5.Zeppelin
6.Sabbath
7.Metallica
8.?...Pink floyd, Van Halen
9.?...Cream, Ac/Dc
10.?...Yardbirds, Ramones maybe?
Of this list I am really only a diehard Who and Kinks fan. I'm not big on the Beatles and can't stand Mick Jagger. I'm a casual listener of the rest but they are NOT my favorite bands. But I DO understand these bands importance and influence in rock history. Besides The Who and Kinks My preferred listening is quite Heavier Iron Maiden, Slayer, Overkill, Danzig a little Tom Petty sometimes. But these bands do not belong in the top ten. I guess it all depends on what "BEST" means. Is "BEST" most important, Or does "BEST" mean favorite?
BTW...If Curt Cobain hadn't blown his head off Nirvana probably wouldn't have been any more popular or famous than Pearl Jam, Soundgarden Or any of the other grunge bands of the era. Killing himself made him a god, but Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam were probably the better band
