The current *spat* between France and the US is what the news would have been like on Sep 12, 2001 had FBI agents' warnings had been heeded. The grousing by various rights group would be loud, but no one would have really none what would have happened.
The US threat was to not to let the plane land in LA. I haven't seen any intercepted emails, but the chances it would have ever made it close to LA if it was going to be hijacked are zero. The US correct position would to warn that it would be shot out of the sky as soon as it entered US airspace. I assume that is what the French were told, in private, was meant by "not allowed to land in LA."
