Tinker, Chaplain, Soldier, Spy

by Joe Katzman at September 21, 2003 4:07 AM

You've probably heard by now that a Muslim Chaplain attached to I Corps and assigned to Guantanamo has been charged with: sedition, aiding the enemy, spying, espionage, and failure to obey a general order. The Army may also choose to charge Capt. James Yee with treason, which under the American Uniform Code of Military Justice can result in a death penalty. No doubt CNN et. al will continue their coverage.

Donald Sensing has a post that includes links to the specific definitions of each offense under the UCMJ, and also the range of punishments. Indeed, espionage alone can result in a death sentence under certain circumstances, and the term "any major element of defense strategy" may cover Yee's actions if convicted. Sensing also links to LGF for a more detailed background on Yee himself.

Meanwhile, Trent Telenko emails to note an Oct. 20, 2001 article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer featuring quotes from (who else?) Capt. James Yee. Its title?

"Muslims in the U.S. are as loyal as any, chaplain says" (Hat Tip: FR)

You just can't make this stuff up. How do the satirists keep pace?
