Within the last 72 hours, two of my best friends in the blogosphere have announced that their sons are seriously considering military service. Am I surprised? No. It would be difficult to have either man as a parent and not at least consider this. At the same time, as a parent the mixture of pride and worry must be intense.
Rev. Donald Sensing's son is looking seriously at the U.S. Marines, and so is he. His post is worth reading just for Don's explanation of why, and the comments are equally heartening.
Armed Liberal's oldest son, meanwhile, is pretty serious about joining the Air Force Special Operations Command's pararescue. He will almost certainly enroll in ROTC upon his return to school in the fall. As A.L. put it in the title of his post: "money, meet mouth."
Where do they get young men like this? This is where it starts; the challenges to come finish the job. My best to both boys as they meet the challenges ahead - and to their parents, as they do the same.

Ping!
I entered Harvard College 5 years ago with the world at my feet, and the smartest thing I ever did was join Army ROTC.
I am available for free consultation on matching the desires of the recruit to needs of the service, and deconstructing recruiter talk.
Kudos to your brother, Robin, and to you for the job you found.
