OK, Cicero is generally a wistful character on this blog. And I said yesterday I've been in a funk. Dan Darling's Cicero article on Iran (The Cicero Articles | Full text of the [German magazine] Cicero articles on Iran) is enough to make me explode.
I received the following link to a video from a friend. You'll need your speakers turned on to appreciate it:
I don't know if this is really coming out of China. It appears to be, based on the source link. If it is really two Chinese students, it gives me hope in this world. Never underestimate the power of American pop culture.
OK, back to work.

yeah man those chinese dudes are awesome. i think they are probably really high too. anyone?
The lyrics to this song just made it even better.
I read somewhere these guys got hired to do short videos for Nokia or some other phone company.
Pretty funny stuff. Here's the info:

Rockets jerseys indicate a Yao Ming following. Hair style is in keeping with kids of their age and more particularly their sideburn trim.
Choice of music -- I've found American music in China is more prominently the softer style rock with emphasis on lyrics and good rhythm, and more of a love theme. (That's the same sound from Chinese and Korean groups.)
Just a guess on the room: it doesn't seem to be the size of a bedroom in the US -- window location, in relation to size of room and the two walls (the two boys are facing in relation to the far wall where the third boy is sitting at the desk) are similar to ones I have seen in Shenzhen.
new best blog contest - this one is something I think the readers hear and affiliated blogs should go vote - the poll is sponsored by a UK media non profit that develops educational materials. As a former teacher who has assessed and tested a number of these free curriculum packs, I cannot tell you how slanted they were.
none the less, check it out - I am down for anything that gives blogs like this a greater foothold in scholarship - public or university. The increase of student essays that i had to grade that quoted sources from either non scholarly sources i.e. personal web sites or library periodical databases was so rapid that I had to develop my own research guide for the web for my students and collegues.

Here's another from them....

And FWIW, if it makes you feel any better, I've seen Iraqis belting out songs like this as well......they LOVE this kind of music for the most part, BSB, Celine Dion, lots of pop, especially emotional stuff, they know every word and they get into it.....and hell yeah, makes you smile.
Life imitates South Park... Celine Dion in the land of Saddam Hussein.
Now these two guys singing Backstreet Boys tunes - and frighteningly, I think I really DO want it that way.
I wonder what Jimmy Hendrix' instrumentals would be like with Chinese lyrics?
Personally, i would really think this was great if they were lipsyncing to Weird Al's mock of that song.

although I appreciate it that you guys paid a little bit attention to those students, i could not help think how arrogant you US citizens are and how poor that you know about the world outside the US, especially when dealing with China.
China has been undergoing a dramatic change for almost 25 years now. Those scenes may seem to unreal or surprise to you and this owner blogger even questioned about whether it really came from China, and another blogger showed surprise that those two wear Rockets jersey. As a matter of fact, this is everywhere and a common scene in university dorm.
Another blogger then went on to surmise that soft/good rhythm songs are more popular. Actually every genre of music are popular in China. The billboard listing is broadcasted almost at the same time as here in US. Not only soft songs, but also heavy metal. Even 12 years ago, heavy metal were very popular among university students.
I guess my point is that don't be surprised such scene came out of China. And please pay more attention to outside world than just Iraq, Afghanatan,
Gobigred,
Point well taken - and after all, many people come to Winds precisely to see those kinds of reports. We're not all rich over here, ya know - travel to China is a bit beyond most budgets. So an online window and commentary, even if it's only a glimpse, can be helpful for improving understanding.
Not at all surprised to find that Yao Ming is spawning lots of Rockets shirts in China (where many of the Rockets shirts we wear here are made, anyway).
Finally, I do thank you for restoring my faith by noting that heavy metal has lots of Chinese fans. Glad it isn't all about the Backstreet Boys and other synthetic cr-p.
Next request: I want a video like this set to Metallica ("Nothing else matters" would be good), or a similarly solid Heavy Metal band!
Joe Katzman,
thanks for your kind reply. Unfortunately, I don't have video like this about Metallica. I know how heavy metal's popular in university dorm about about 12 years ago as I were one of those followers. I remembered we were just happy to find any sources where we can listen to Metallica, Jon Bon Jovi, Areosmith, poison, police, Van Helen, Nirvana, Gun & Rose.
I know it's quite a trip going to China from US and US media isn't doing a very good job to portrait China, as you would tell, most of new s are negative and kind of out-of-dated. I know China still has a lot of problem, however, we can not deny its development. Today's China is whole different now.
sorry for kind of off-topic.
I just came back from China, I realize that China has made great progress in the last 20 years, for example, Shanghai is more modernized city than New York, go there and see yourself.
