Just Go Vote

By Armed Liberal at 16:17

However you choose to vote, just go do it. Think of it as a ritual - a form of Communion for a democratic republic.

And as long as you're reading this and thinking about your connection to our Republic, click over to Solder's Angels and drop a Starbucks-equivalent or better on Project Valour-IT. The soldiers who bear the wounds received in our uniform deserve it.

Whose Parties Are They?

By Armed Liberal at 19:59
One can define elitism as, say, resistance to progressive taxation, and make a case that Republicans better merit that description. But, broadly speaking, the Democratic Party is the party to which elites belong. It is the party of Harvard (and most of the Ivy League), of Microsoft and Apple (and most of Silicon Valley), of Hollywood and Manhattan (and most of the media) and, although there is some evidence that numbers are evening out in this election cycle, of Goldman Sachs (and most of the investment banking profession). That the billionaire David Koch's Americans for Prosperity Foundation supports the Tea Party has recently been much in the news. But the Democrats have the support of more, and more active, billionaires. Of the 20 richest ZIP codes in America, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, 19 gave the bulk of their money to Democrats in the last election, in most cases the vast bulk - 86 percent in 10024 on the Upper West Side. Meanwhile, only 22 percent of non-high-school educated white males are happy with the direction the country is going in. The Democrats' overlap with elites leaves each party with a distinctive liability. The Democrats appear sincerely deluded about whom they actually represent. Democrats - who would have no trouble discerning elite solidarity in the datum that, say, in the 1930s the upper ranks of Britain's media, church, business and political institutions were dominated by Tories - somehow think their own predominance in similar precincts is ... what? Coincidence? Irony?

Republicans, meanwhile, do not recognize the liability that their repudiation by elites represents in an age of expertise and specialization - even in the eyes of the non-elite center of the country. Like a European workingman's party at the turn of the last century, the Republican Party today inspires doubts that it has the expertise required to run a large government bureaucracy. Whatever one thinks of Obama's economic team, and Bill Clinton's before it, the Bush White House was never capable, in eight years, of assembling a similarly accomplished one. Nor is there much evidence that Republicans were ever able to conceptualize the serious problems with the nation's medical system, let alone undertake to reform it on their own terms.

Why Bill Clinton Is An Asset And Obama Is A Liability

By Armed Liberal at 05:17

Michael Gerson in the Washington Post
Obama clearly believes that his brand of politics represents "facts and science and argument." His opponents, in disturbing contrast, are using the more fearful, primitive portion of their brains. Obama views himself as the neocortical leader -- the defender, not just of the stimulus package and health-care reform but also of cognitive reasoning. His critics rely on their lizard brains -- the location of reptilian ritual and aggression. Some, presumably Democrats, rise above their evolutionary hard-wiring in times of social stress; others, sadly, do not.

Though there is plenty of competition, these are some of the most arrogant words ever uttered by an American president.

The neocortical presidency destroys the possibility of political dialogue. What could Obama possibly learn from voters who are embittered, confused and dominated by subconscious evolutionary fears? They have nothing to teach, nothing to offer to the superior mind. Instead of engaging in debate, Obama resorts to reductionism, explaining his opponents away.

Glenn Beck As Nemiah Scudder

By Armed Liberal at 16:32

I've mentioned before that Glenn Beck just creeps me out - it's not just that his politics and mine are so different (they are) - I have watched O'Reilly and Michelle Malkin and others and don't get the same stomach-churning sense of dread that I get from Beck.

Now, watching the video of his speeches at the Lincoln Memorial, I realize I was totally right in stating who he reminds me of - Nehemiah Scudder.

Remember him? From the Robert Heinlein novel ...if this goes on? - where the United States is ruled by a theocratic dictatorship.
The story is set in a future theocratic American society, ruled by the latest in a series of "Prophets." The First Prophet was Nehemiah Scudder, a backwoods preacher turned President (elected in 2012), then dictator (no elections were held in 2016 or later)

"...Dukakis Without The Administrative Skill."

By Armed Liberal at 16:29

Go over and read a great 'report card' on Obama at the Huffington Post (can you believe I'm saying that?).

Seriously, writer Drew Westen nails Obama for exactly the things I'm increasingly uncomfortable with (and if you believe the polls, you're increasingly uncomfortable with as well).
What's costing the president and courting danger for Democrats in 2010 isn't a question of left or right, because the president has accomplished the remarkable feat of both demoralizing the base and completely turning off voters in the center. If this were an ideological issue, that would not be the case. He would be holding either the middle or the left, not losing both.

'Green Lanterns' And Elections

By Armed Liberal at 01:56

The Juicebox Mafia made a big deal out of mocking the notion that 'determination' is an important ingredient in strategic success in conflicts (like Iraq and Afghanistan). It's amusing to see the concrete manifestation of the 'GLE' in domestic politics - Democratic voters are apparently feeling disinclined to participate electorally - which is going to have some significant effects next year.

There's actually an interesting literature on domestic conflict and signaling in international relations - I'll try and fold something in when I write about Afghanistan tomorrow night.

We've Got Ours In NY-23

By Armed Liberal at 18:47

The special election congressional race for New York's 23rd District has gathered a lot of attention; with the liberal Republican (a New England stereotype) withdrawing in the face of a widely-supported Conservative candidate.

I have no dog in this fight; I don't live there and can't speak to the qualities of the candidates (Iowahawk made his judgement based on wheel wells and secondarily, ideology). I have a mild predisposition to seeing Democrats win, but that has been badly eroded over the last decade.

So why am I writing about this, you ask?

Because a local editorial encapsulated what has me so furious at our political classes that I do think we simply need to turn our statehouses over and shake them very hard.

Enema of the State: The Galbraith Plan to Destroy Opposition in Action

By Porphyrogenitus at 17:45
Cross-posting from here, at the generous invitation of Armed Liberal, but adding a link to this mild Politico article, which is quite relevant to the subject.

We've seen, recently, attacks on Limbaugh by the Left, which is par for the course. But also a war on news entities that are not sufficiently servile, coupled with warning to the others. We've seen a war on the Chamber of Commerce which consists in part of an effort to dismantle it, because they oppose the Administration on some issues (I.E. Cap and Trade) after supporting it on other measures (I.E. the "Stimulus"), and an attempt by the government to gag a private entity, intimidating it and others from using their free speech.

Amateurism

By Marc Danziger at 06:03

So I just read that ex-Virginian governor Douglas Wilder - who is, btw, African-American - just publicly declined to endorse Democratic candidate Creighton Deeds, in spite of a strong appeal from President Obama. Last week, embattled New York Governor David Patterson (I think you have to add the 'embattled' in front of his title - it's in the style guide) declined to step down after being directly asked by the President.

I've got three thoughts about this. The first is a crib from Will Rodgers: "I belong to no organized party, I'm a Democrat."

The next is that things that are easy with 67% strong popularity are really, really hard with a 51% 'somewhat approve' rating.

And finally, from my corporate work, no question at this level is supposed to get asked until quiet discussions have confirmed the answer. That's a bush-league (sorry...) mistake, and a sign of political immaturity at the senior staff level. We need to fix that, please, Mr. President.

We Rabble Are Absolutely At The Gates

By Armed Liberal at 13:00

I've known Matt Burden - Blackfive, of www.blackfive.net, one of the original milblogs - pretty much since I've started blogging.

He's a vet, and a tech guy, and a dad - and someone who's always stuck me as smart, honest, energetic, and most of all, practical.

So even though our politics don't exactly line up (remember, he's a Republican and I'm the Armed Liberal), I was thrilled when he told me that he was thinking about running for office. I may have even made encouraging noises - possibly loud encouraging noises.

Imagine my surprise to discover this post at Blackfive. The crazy SOB is doing it. He's running for the Illinois State Legislature.

And I think he can win. And more, that he should.

To do that, he needs your help. He needs 10,000 people (specifically, 10,000 U.S. citizens) to go to his campaign site give him at least $10. I'm in for $100. Step up, step up - and do the right thing.

Because I have this wildly optimistic idea that a whole new cohort of people are about to enter politics. People who are smart, honest, energetic, and most of all, practical. I'm hopeful that a decent number of them will be Democrats. But you know what? I'll support them when I see them, because I'm about being in the Party of the Practical. And I'll ask you - as strongly as I know how - to do the same thing.

Because my sons' Republic depends on it.

We All Need Some Humor This Week

By Armed Liberal at 22:13

...and S.C. Governor Mark Sanford is providing it.

Here's Jeffrey Goldberg at 11:39 am Eastern:
Does Gov. Sanford Suffer from Dissociative Fugue?
Gov. Sanford's strange vanishing act -- he was thought to be hiking the Appalachian Trail alone, until he washed up in Argentina -- prompts me to wonder if he suffers from a condition known as dissociative fugue disorder.
...then at 2:36 pm:
Well, Gov. Sanford Isn't Suffering from Dissociative Fugue
He's suffering from something else entirely: Argentine Nookie Syndrome.
I don't think his career is going to be recovering from this level of ridicule any time soon.
