Vegetarianism Doesn't Protect You From Predators

Paging Mr. Darwin... from BBC News:

"An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.

The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the city of Gebze on Friday."

Talk about blaming the victim...

It wasn't her fault somebody did what they did but it was her fault she put herself in a position they could... Very sad but it's tainted by the fact her naivety almost certainly caused it.

Yes. Just the the guy in Ukraine who thought "fishing" with a live high-voltage electric wire was a good idea. It was working great, too, until he waded in to collect the fish...

Likewise, this person's mentality led her to do an unsafe thing in a stunningly stupid way. Her stupidity got her killed.

As the Despair, Inc. poster goes...

A sad but true allegory for the EU, UN, IMF, Democrats, World Bank, etc

Joe: What's your point? That innocents get killed by militant fundamentalists as well? I think we've figured that out by now.

Alchemist,
Joe's point is that this woman died because of core flaws in her world view.

According to the BBC article, "She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people."

As her sister Maria said: "Her travels were for an artistic performance and to give a message of peace and of trust, but not everyone deserves trust," another sister, Maria, told the Italian news agency, Ansa.

The core flaws in her world view were:

1) All local people in all regions of the world will be kind to strangers, especially foreign women traveling alone.

2) Traveling in a Muslim country is no more dangerous than traveling in W. Europe or N. America or Japan because there are no cultural or religious differences that would increase the danger to a strange, foreign, non-Muslim woman traveling alone.

3) Good will and peaceful intentions are all that is necessary for security anywhere in the world.

4) All people are fundamentally good and disputes or conflict can always be settled by dialogue and negotiation.

5) Predators are just misunderstood people, tribes or nations. As such, there is no need to be armed or prepared for conflict. If you are attacked or threatened, simply apply principles 1 - 4, above, and radiate peace and trust.

6) Ignore all historic or current evidence that contradicts principles 1 - 5.

Ms. di Marineo faithfully followed her world view and deliberately ignored mountains of contradictory evidence. It cost her her life.

You might call it evolution in action. You might also note that her murder calls into question the core assumptions of millions of fellow pacifists and "progressives" throughout the West.

Bad philosophy can be fatal.

Didn't Iraq already teach us this?

Alchemist, yes. Iraq has taught us precisely this: not to dress up like brides and travel alone through Turkey, the militarily-enforcedly-secular former seat of the Ottoman Empire.

Seriously -- what's your point? 'Cause I'm not getting it.

In the first comment, I meant "innocence" really as naivety. There's this thing called the darwin awards, that heavily documents death by poor planning. It's not an unknown, or rare occurance.

So it was kindof a snarky comment (I haven't been sleeping well lately...) but yes, bad philosophies in the middle east get people killed all the time. Bad philosophy,(the idea that democracy would bloom like flowers), heavily damaged how we approached the Iraqi occupation, and may have set us back years, if not prevented our success at all.

But, bad philosophies have been killing people for thousands of years. Still, I haven't heard that many liberals claim that the middle east is relatively peacefull place. Although I do remember this comment claiming that Iraqi markets are "Just like Indiana markets."

Kindof similar. (Obviously, he was smart enough to wear kevlar and not a dress), but still very naive.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
