War, No War, and Adaptation in War: A Sterling Discussion

| 5 Comments | 2 TrackBacks

On Saturday, Winds team member and Marshal Callimachus posted an essay "War or No War," sparked by the movie United 93 and comments by Todd Beamer's father.

It's a fine post, and ended up provoking one of the better discussions we've had on this blog - an intense series of back and forth exchanges in the comments that have already created 2 Guest Blog posts (Of Fire Ants and Feedback Loops | The Fire Ants of Allah and Second-Order Effects) from one of the discussion's side-jaunts alone, and may result in one more post from me after this one. I've elevated the post into Winds of Change.NET's "Best Of..." category, and while the post was good it's the discussions that elevated it to this level.

In retrospect, comment #23 by Gabriel Chapman of "The Great Satan" blog, and celebrim's response, were the key catalysts. Gabriel began with:

"I understand that point Joshua, but I just don't see our leaders adapting to the enemy, and countering them effectively...."

If you haven't been following the post and the discussion, you're missing a good one. Start at comment #23 and keep reading....

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but you really should have pointed the link to my comment in that thread (#19) which is what Gabriel is responding to.

#3 from Joshua: Not to toot my own horn or anything, but you really should have pointed the link to my comment in that thread (#19) which is what Gabriel is responding to.

Here's the link, ready to click on: (link)

Joe, I started reading this thread. This is not exactly light reading. It is a terrific series of posts. WoC is an absolute gold mine. Thanks.

PS: For those of you who haven't, take a look - it is excellent.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
