So for the last three weeks, I've been dealing with a very depressed Tenacious G. We went away over the Father's Day weekend, and came back to discover that our last remaining cat - the feral kitten Biggest Guy had brought home and - imaginatively - named Kit had gone out and not come back.
For the last three weeks, we flyered the neighborhood, visited local vets and shelters, and walked around bothering our neighbors to no effect.
This morning, as I got up to make coffee, tea, and cocoa for the house, I heard a familiar mewing sound from the back door.
A healthy but skinnier Kit was there, wondering what I was making her for breakfast.
She got AIMS and pumpkin.
Happiness reigns in small things, indeed...

I used to have a cat that would disappear for 3-4 days at a time, come home, eat & sleep for 2 days, then head on back out. She lived to be 18 years old, so it must have worked well for her.
Sorry, but cat owners always remind me of someone waving a balloon in front of somebody in a persistant vegitative state. Only they seem to be able to be able to perceive the affection being transmitted. Im fairly confident what we label as 'owner' shows up in the cat frame of mind as 'slow moving animal I can steal food from safely'.
Mark, Signs of affection need not involve the transfer of dog slobber, though I might agree with you WRT to snakes and reptiles.
Reminds me of a cat we used to have (may he rest in peace)...
We were living in a compound in Riyadh, our six (mostly) indoor cats would usually spend their nights in our flat.
Well, one night, Gordon didn't come home. And the next night, and the next... This went on for about 10 days, and we were putting flyers out, walking all around the compound going "Kitty-kitty!" and searching everywhere. We feared he had wandered off-compound, and had been savaged by the wild dogs that were so common around the area.
We had pretty much given up hope, when the Wife happened to chat with the help in the recreation center...
Why yes, they'd seen a cat like that! And they had been putting food out for "her!" And they had made a "nest" for her, since she looked like she was just about to drop a litter of a dozen kittens or so [and I must confess that our dear Gordon was, well, just a bit, well, how should I put it... wide?].
They said he was somewhere in the recreation center, but was hardly ever seen during the day. So we were let in after hours, searched, searched, and searched...
and finally with the aid of a bit of smelly catfood, we were able to elicit a "meeeewwww!"
After a bit more searching, we managed to find him, well settled into the base of a pool table. How he managed to find that obscure hollow space, I'll never know, but he managed to hide out there for the better part of two weeks.
With the help of some tuna, we were able to lure him out and get him back home. And he never wanted to wander into the recreation center ever again.
He was a great cat, and we miss him and all his various adventures.
