Why I Like Kevin Drum.

He suggests that today's not a day to score political points. It's a day to comfort, study, and contemplate.

Sadly few on either side of the blogosphere will take Drum's advice.

And to show how badly things have gotten these days, I don't recall a real need for such advice on 9/11.

You need to check the first comment on that post. I don't recommend wading deeper into the swamp.

Since you're generally one of the tackier folks in the blogosphere always trying to score crass political points at every turn, why the high horse today?

Oh that's right. You'll be sanctimonious today.

There's always tomorrow, right?

Ron

Check the comments on all the blogs. Been to LGF today? And of course Powerline is once again trumpteting comments from other blogs while still refusing comments on their own which is it's own form of hypocrasy.

From Kos to LGF there's no difference in the comment threads. Variations on the same inanity.

And whatever you do, stay far away from the AM band over the next few days.

It seems like common dumb Drum to me. Today is a good time to comfort, study, contemplate and speak. It's hard to do well, and one should be under emotional control with the mind engaged before speaking, but I expect there will be quite a bit of thoughtful commentary today.

This is a very good thing since the broadcast media and politicians will all be working feverishly to spin events in ways they deem useful.

This is a way to comfort, study, and contemplate that is valued by those who don't feel well served by MSM and feel a need for community. Some of it will be best understood as expression of grief and pain rather than reasoned analysis and argument, even if it has some of the forms associated with thoughtful speech. Let it rain.

Gosh, I'm only generally one of the tackiest people in the blogosphere"?...
I'll have to try harder.

A.L.

Marc, I didn't respond because I figured he was talking about you instead of me .... ( grin ).

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, A.L. It's that kinda thing.

I agree with yours' and Kevin D's sentiments. People will go where their conscience leads on occasions like this. You, Kevin, myself, and others are free to take "comfort, study, and contemplate" as lead by our conscience. Others will bash Bush, conservatives, liberals, muslims, etc. as their conscience (such as it is) leads them.

There are different qualities of people. Events like yesterday's tend to highlight the best and the worst of people. Both your's and Kevin's behavior demonstrate a degree of nobility, compassion, and leadership not shown by many today.

Perhaps the best path is to simply act out of conscience and expect the same of others then watch what happens. Some will rise above the seething mass of ignoble humanity, and others won't. The relative quality of different people becomes quite clear in times like this.

Thanks for your effort. It is appreciated.

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

*This* puts text in bold.

_This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
