Winds of War: 2003-03-07

In an effort to bring you some of the more interesting pieces out there without drowning out the rest of our posts, We've started putting each day's collection into one post of short listings. Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused.

If you think your blog has a worthy post in this area, feel free to email us and we'll come take a look. If you find something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip link to today's "Winds of War". Welcome!

  • Time to add to Dissident Frogman's "Busted Beards"? LGF reports that we just bagged 2 of Bin Laden's sons in Afghanistan.

  • Closer to home, Charles correctly notes that there's some very disturbing cases afoot that indicate NYC mosques have raised serious money for al-Qaeda. The video clips of "terror prof." Sami Al-Arian ranting about "jihad, jihad, jihad" and killing Jews clearly demonstrate another facet of the problem.

  • See also this article: "My Arab Street"

  • Team Stryker had an unbelievably good piece on human shields the other day. Events have jumped right in behind, with a Background Briefing on Targeting that clearly indicates the US position. (See also this cartoon at the bottom of our post)

  • Diablogger fisks the lastest NY Times non-editorial on Iraq: "insightful non-conclusions with scathing non-committals about possible uncertainties regarding unknown scenarios." That's about right.

  • One Hand Clapping has the transcript of Bush's speech. You might also want audio or video.

  • The French have been selling Iraq spare parts for their Air Force fighters and helicopters, as recently as a few months ago. Apparently, it's been going on illegally for years. Merde in France correctly calls it "treachery of the lowest order."

  • In answer to: "What does Saddam have to do with it?" - "it" being America's actions post-9/11. The Wild Monk gives a good, concise answer to a querulous Frenchman.

  • Former Venezuelan trade minister Moses Naim asks a very relevant question: what else besides elections is required for real democracy? Highly relevant to the future of the Persian Gulf, as well as Venezuela itself where Chavez assassinates political opponents and supports international narco-terrorists FARC.

  • Securing Russian nuclear and biological materials, so they can't fall into terrorist hands. Great idea. Not so great in practice, it seems.

  • Amir Taheri absolutely scorches the anti-liberation protesters. Again. This time, he's comparing them to Stalin's "peace movement."

  • So is Samuel Freedman, Associate Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

  • People's Republic of Seabrook just refers to "Chapter 7 Moral Bankruptcy" - and he's a liberal.

  • Blaster talks about another recent anti-terrorist success, and his related experience with the terrorists involved.

  • The UN has shown good judgement in military matters? Calupundit thinks so. Fellow liberal blogger Amygdala cites that post, and wonders what Calpundit inhaled.

  • The Lone Dissenter, a 16 year old lady has a converation about guns with a French girl who really is named Fifi. Fifi thinks a cell phone is useful because if you're getting raped, you can call the police. You just can't make this stuff up.

  • Armed Liberal has a discourse on "a gearheads' view of SUV's" over at the old Armed Liberal site.

  • We always try to end on a more humourous note. Deviant Saint has a suggestion for the anti-liberation movement, one that would probably achieve their goal if practiced. He recommends self-immoloation. "If just one person set themselves on fire every day for 30 days in protest to this war (with good media coverage), I assure you that George Bush and others in "the government" would take notice and seriously change not only their rhetoric, but their actions." Mr. Chomsky, it's ANSWER on the Hot Line...

  • G-ddamnit! Here's why that last bit may not be funny, but would be justice: " As she stepped up to the Iraqi checkpoint, a military policeman suddenly pulled a knife, slashed open the flimsy plastic containers and splashed petrol all over her. Then the head of the Iraqi border guard casually walked up to her, pulled a lighter from his pocket and set her ablaze." (Hat Tip: watch/)

The thread in this link has pointers to two stories about the northern African/Arabic culture arriving in various European nations and causing an increase in rapes and brutality on girls.

It becomes clear that the euros are avoiding addressing the issue entirely, in the name of cultural sensitivity, creating ghetto areas where the basic rule of law is not in effect.

    Oh yes, the link. Sorry.

"Unbelievably good piece..." Okay, I'll take that as a complement. ;-)

    Thanks!

    "Anti-liberation?"

    Does that make you "pro-death-by-shock-and-awe?"

Seriously, what do the labels help?

    Immolation:

I never recommended immolation... that was all plinko's doing.

    at least get it straight.

but then again plink IS a pope...

    hmmmmm...

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

    *This* puts text in bold.

    _This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
