Winds of War: 2003-03-14

Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused. If you think your blog has a worthy post in this area, feel free to email us and we'll come take a look.

If you find something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip hyperlink to today's "Winds of War". Welcome!

  • Victor Davis Hanson. You know what to do.

  • I'll start with happy stuff today. Muslims in Kosovo are telling the Saudis to take their money and shove it. Rather than mosques, they want "more useful institutions". Heh.

  • The La Habra 9/11 memorial recently destroyed by "peace" activists? Rebuilt, bigger and better than before (if only they'd done that in NYC)! Oh, and they've charged one of the people responsible.

  • Meanwhile, Zogby Blog has happy news from Kuwait. They're not ungrateful, they see Saddam as a menace, and they also see lots of business opportunities in a liberated Iraq. Good news on all counts.

  • Ted Belman thinks the USA's stance on Israel vs. the Palestinians has changed fundamentally, and the dynamics will remain changed. Ted doesn't just assert it, he backs it up.

  • We've mentioned Bernard Lewis lately, probably the greatest scholar we have on the Middle East & Islam. Back in 1993, he had an Atlantic article on "Islam and Liberal Democracy." He also has a 2002 piece called "What Went Wrong?" In-depth and excellent. (Hat Tip: Mader)

  • Still, getting there will take some doing. Here's what's going on with the military buildup; and more from Kathy Kinsley.

  • Unfortunately, the US Army's experiment in using chickens as chemical attack detectors has failed. Rest in peace, brave chicken soldiers... maybe "KFC" was a bad acronym for this program.

  • Is Saddam moving toward a first strike? We've covered that issue before, but recent activities add weight to the question.

  • What's going on in Turkey. Rantburg's PIN (Pruitt Intelligence Network), again.

  • Innocents Abroad looks at what's up with France, the Vatican, and the EU. Very good. (Hat Tip: Inscrutable American)

  • From Baghdad itself, there's Salam Pax. Amygdala has the coverage in his March 12th lead post.

  • John O'Sullivan on "The New Western Order" post war. If you're anti-EU, you need to read this... he introduces some considerations you need to think about.

  • Once again, the U.N. proves its irrelevance. China is blocking action on a Security Council resolution condemning the North Koreans for nuclear weapons development.

  • Here's a pretty nifty memorial... for the Air Force. Trent thinks it may turn out to be more like a tombstone. We'll see.

  • Amygdala explains the recent Richard Perle v. Seymour Hersh brouhaha. His verdict? A Saudi trap.

  • We always try to end on a lighter note. How about the revival of Kurdish comdedy! Some of it is pretty funny.

FYI -- Lewis has another book coming out this month, The Crisis of Islam: Holy War and Unholy Terror.

    I'm eagerly anticipating its release...

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

    *This* puts text in bold.

    _This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.
