Winds of War: 2003-03-05

by Joe Katzman at March 5, 2003 12:25 PM

In an effort to bring you some of the more interesting pieces out there without drowning out the rest of our posts, We've started putting each day's collection into one post of short listings. Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused.

If you think your blog has a worthy post in this area, feel free to email us and we'll come take a look. If you find something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip link to today's "Winds of War". Welcome!

  • The Guardian has an article from Al-JAzeera journalist Yosri Fouda. The subject? His interview in April 2002 with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The 2 money quotes: "we first thought of striking at a couple of nuclear facilities but decided against it...for now" and "...yes, we did it." (Hat Tip: /watch)

  • Muqtedar Khan of Itjihad.org has a message for Mr. Bin Laden. Given that Osama may well be dead, I'm sure the directional advice will be helpful. (Hat Tip: Photodude)

  • Geitner Simmons blog makes an excellent point: if America's enemies in France and elsewhere continue to make international bodies a joke due to their resentment of America, have they considered the likely cost of America reciprocating that resentment? [Full article here, recommended] It really does look more like the 1930s every day.

  • Andrew Sullivan writes about the relief of action, and the real agendas. Let the liberation begin! Faster, please...

  • Who can top Yosri Fouda today? Only George Packer, whose "Dreaming of Democracy" article about Kanan Makiya and the Iraqi democracy movement is detailed, illuminating and outstanding. It's in NY Times Magazine, and any free registration is worth it.

  • Rantburg brings us this story from The Times: Inside Iraq's Republican Guard. Interesting interview with a defector.

  • Speaking of interviews, who better than Sharkblog to translate a German press interview with Ahmad Berwari of the Kurdish PUK. The way this guy shoots down the reporter again and again in priceless.

  • Still on the Kurds. Ace Pilots gives us a map and a link to Kurdistan.org: "We need lovers of humanity to HELP. We hope you are one of those individuals." Visit, and drop them an email to let them know that you are: akin@kurdistan.org.

  • Speaking of priceless, how about this Colin Powell quote re: Iraq. (Hat Tip: CPO Sparkey)

  • Donald Rumsfeld: The Defense Department cannot answer how much a war on Iraq might cost or how many troops it would take to pacify the country afterward, because the answers are "unknowable."

  • One reason is covered by Parapundit's discussion of Islamist forces in Iraq and the problems they present for reconstruction.

  • Major warfare going on at Instapundit.com, where Glenn's post about anti-semitism in the Cathloic Church has triggered a wave of debate. You can see the second wave of debate here.

  • Another alienated liberal. No, not from America. His "Chapter 7 Moral Bankruptcy" post says: "I may be a liberal, but I'm also a believer in common sense. Most of the anti-war Left in this country could frankly benefit from a large helping of common sense."

  • Instapundit also links to an excellent article on America's military future as a maritime power. Two phrases to start putting in your vocabulary: "seabasing" and "expeditionary Warfare" (incl. historical lessons).

  • North Korean test missile warhead found in Alaska?

  • As nuclear reprocessing begins in North Korea, GlobalSecurity.org offers thoughts on what Korean War II would look like. Stanley Kurtz says it may be coming.

  • Saddam Hussein will be gone soon, but the readers of LGF think they've found the perfect guy to play the next Austin Powers supervillain. I think they might be right. I think, if you asked him the right way, he might even do it.

  • We always try to end on something of a humourous note. Dean Esmay pointed me to a hysterical put-on of some poor radio show DJ in Brazil, courtesy of one of the boys at Right Wing News who impersonated an Iraqi on the street. Just go read it!

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

    *This* puts text in bold.

    _This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
