Winds of War: 2003-05-19

by Joe Katzman at May 19, 2003 4:56 AM

MAY 19/03: Our goal is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the global War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused every Monday & Thursday. If you find something here you want to blog about yourself (and we hope you do), all we ask is that you do as we do and offer a Hat Tip hyperlink to today's "Winds of War". Welcome!

Today's "Winds of War" is a collaboration with M. Simon, a frequent guest blogger here at Winds of Change.NET. Because the incoming format was slightly different, we've divided the report into independent sections (Wider War | Iraq | Roadmap | Iran).

The Wider War

  • Steven den Beste discusses where we've been, and what's next according to his preferred approach. Good take on the wider perspective from the Jacksonian contingent.

  • In contrast, Daily Kos gives the liberal view. opinion: other than #5 & #8, this seems to boil down to "terrorism is here to stay, live with it." No thanks.

  • WATCH/ has a translation of Francoise Thom's article: "The Choices French Diplomacy Made." Brilliant piece.

  • Choices an unaccountable EU will make in future, too, if given the power. If this passes, its primary effect will be to successfully consolidate EU foreign policy and divide it from the USA. It's fair to assume we'd face a future European foreign policy that was both hostile and unaccountable.

  • The bombings in Morocco (Hat Tip: WATCH/) add weight to Kate's analysis last week. Best one-sentence analysis belongs to Little Tiny Lies: "Al Qaeda, Already on Thin Ice, Begins to Tap Dance."

  • Al-Qaeda arms traced to Saudi National Guard?

  • Ampersand is unhappy about the situation in Afghanistan. (Hat Tip: Calpundit)

  • Army offensive in the southern Phillipines against Muslim separatists.

  • Things are heating up in neighbouring Indonesia too.

  • M.S: I like Hushoor, a.k.a. The Marmot’s Hole for a feel of politics on the ground in South Korea.

  • We try to close on a lighter note. Gotta give this caption a chuckle. Wouldn't be funny if the mullah was from Kandahar.

I hope Maxim got a chance to read the Thom article. I look forward to his continued defence of the indefencible.

"In contrast, Daily Kos gives the liberal view..."

Someone should give the traditional conservative, and pro-liberty, views.

There needs to a greater representation of both types of conservative viewpoints, with respect to issues such as war and the state, in the Blogosphere.

(My previous blog entries have been covering the war from a traditional conservative perspective. [Scroll down from the index page to the posts for March, February, January, and the archives.])

I just came across this blog for the first time today. It looks very good, and contains many good links and commentary. Keep up the good work!

Here are some quick tips for adding simple Textile formatting to your comments, though you can also use proper HTML tags:

    *This* puts text in bold.

    _This_ puts text in italics.

bq. This "bq." at the beginning of a paragraph, flush with the left hand side and with a space after it, is the code to indent one paragraph of text as a block quote.

To add a live URL, "Text to display":http://windsofchange.net/ (no spaces between) will show up as Text to display. Always use this for links - otherwise you will screw up the columns on our main blog page.

Finally, note that a constant onslaught of Trackback spams from auto-generated blogspot blogs has forced Winds to ban the blogspot.com domain from use in comments or trackbacks. If you host on blogspot, consider moving; otherwise, the complaints need to be directed at Google not us.
