Welcome! Our goal at Winds of Change.NET is to give you one power-packed briefing of insights, news and trends from the global War on Terror that leaves you stimulated, informed, and occasionally amused every Monday & Thursday. Thursday's Winds of War briefings are given by me, Colt, of Eurabian Times.
Apologies for my enforced absence last week. My ISP is giving us trouble. To make up for it, this week's Winds of War is a bit of a bumper edition. There's a new layout, too, which may or may not stay the same - depending on the number and locations of news items. Enjoy!
TOP TOPICS
- The CIA says that Iran recieved nuclear know-how from AQ Khan.
- Syrian mosques are sending hundreds of terrorists in to Iraq every month.
- Al-Qaeda are making ever greater use of propaganda. Audio tapes are coming out every six weeks or so, and they're trying even harder to recruit in Europe and the United States.
- JK: Mayflower Hill has been doing amazing work re: Sudan. Now we get simple flowcharts that help you understand what's going on in Darfur. Right now, he says, there's a lot of faulty understanding out there.
Other Topics Today Include: Iran's deal with Europe; martyr sign-up; Hamas to claim attacks for A-Q; Egypt aids Gaza terrorists; chopper down in Sinai?; Yemeni A-Q apologise, released; EU did/didn't contact Hamas; 9/11 linked to 3/11; Qaeda has WMD know-how, and use is inevitable; foreign intelligence agency involved in Beslan; Basayev flees Chechnya; Zarqawi called Chile/Cyprus; Barghouti for pres!; KSM and Bosnia; progress against JI; bounty hunters chase Abu Sayyaf; JI may use biochem; Sudan bombs villages; A-Q in East Africa; and much more.
IRAN
- Iran and Europe have signed a deal on Iran's nuclear program. It is temporary, it doesn't address plutonium and it is so watertight that Iran is claiming victory over America. "The suspension will only last as long as the negotiations. It should be a question of months and not years. We should not feel during the negotiations that they are trying to gain time," he said. For some reason, America is not reassured.
- JK: Meanwhile, it seems that U.N. inspectors in Iran only get to inspect locations that Iran has declared as nuclear sites. U.N. = Unremitting Nincompoops.
- There are no al-Qaeda in Iran! No terrorists, either! Not even in custody! C'mon, Ali - at least stick with one lie.
- Iran is signing up martyrs to attack the trinity of evil: America, Israel and Salman Rushdie.
THE MIDDLE EAST
- Hamas are increasingly embracing the role of an international, rather than local, terrorist group. First, Shabak thwarted a set of plots in Canada against Jewish and Israeli targets. They were to be claimed by al-Qaeda, and all links to Hamas hidden. Second, a long piece looking at the real possibility of Gaza becoming a sanctuary for al-Qaeda.
- Israeli military intelligence has concluded that Egypt is aiding terrorists in Gaza with weapons and expertise. In spite of this, Israel will allow Egypt to place troops on the Egypt-Gaza frontier, and Sharon has said Israel may surrender control of the Philadelphi corridor.
- Debka reported that an Egyptian military helicopter carrying special forces was shot down over the Sinai.
- The FT reports that Egypt is holding 3,000 over the Red Sea bombings.
- Convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti will run for the P.A. presidency.
- An American-Yemeni has been indicted for attempted murder. His lawyers claim he is mentally handicapped; al-Banna himself says that his "closeness to God" is responsible for his terrorist activities.
- Yemen has released 113 members of al-Qaeda who have said they're sorry and won't do it again.
- The EU says it didn't talk to Hamas, after Solana said it did. If the Iraqi information minister is looking for employment...
THE AMERICAS
- Terrorist funding in the U.S. - money to al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Hamas.
- The Feds have linked the 9/11 attacks to the Madrid train bombings.
- The CIA says that A-Q has WMD know-how.
- Yossef Bodansky says an al-Qaeda WMD attack on the U.S. is inevitable.
- Swiss intelligence reported that Zarqawi made phone calls to supporters Chile. Chile is denying this, suggesting that 'Chile' was confused with 'Cyprus'. Hmm...
EUROPE
- The Russian parliamentary inquiry in to the Beslan massacre has said that a foreign intelligence agency might have been involved. No word on which one.
- The Russian media reports that Shamil Basayev may have left Chechnya.
- Russia has nabbed a Hizb ut-Tahrir cell planning to take hostages.
- Dutch intelligence is altering its focus from bugging suspected communists to fighting Islamic terrorism.

- North Koreans are no longer wearing badges of Kim Jong-Il.
- Abu Sayyaf face a new threat: bounty hunters trying to win the U.S. bounty of $5 million for the group's leader.
- The Filipinos bombed an Abu Sayyaf/JI meet, which has got MILF mighty angry.

Thanks for the pointer to the Mayflower Hill piece! I've used it in a comment on my blog.
Regarding the Chile comment... I should point out that, in Spanish, Cyprus is "Chipre". Dunno who al Zarqawi was really calling but the claim of a mixup is not as far-fetched as it sounds in English.
*The Russian parliamentary inquiry in to the Beslan massacre has said that a foreign intelligence agency might have been involved. No word on which one.
Georgia, probably. That would fit in with the current Moscow muscle-flexing re the so-called "near abroad" (Ukraine, Abkhazia, etc.)
