Oil over $50/bbl, outsourcing to China and India, U.S. elelction on with the future of the free world at stake. Yeah, yeah. Cry me a river.
Tonight is supposed to be opening night for the NHL. Instead, we have a lockout. The 2 sides aren't even talking to one another, and it'll probably trash the whole season. So here we are, sitting here and facing a whole Canadian winter without NHL hockey.
Four months of this, and we're gonna be looking for someone to invade...

Northwest Territory?
Dude, OR WA and CA are vulnerable so C'MON DOWN!
My 80 yo mother told me today if Kerry wins she's
going to move to Canada. She's a millionaire...
cool huh?
I hate to be the one to say it, but given the current state of the Canadian military, it probably wouldn't take all that much to achieve ...
Then again, neither did Iraq.
Joe,
Ooh snap! Are you going to take Dan's insult to the proud Canadian Royal Mounties lying down?? Them thar's fightin words!
Why would we ever want to invade the USA? All your states near the border have the same crappy weather we do, and Hawaii's out in nowheresville.
In about 2 months, we'll start taking applications from location scouts...
No, no, Joe. Think love, not war. Specifically, think offshoring. Half the decent players grew up speaking Russian, right? They've got more people, and a hell of a lot more ice. Through the miracle of modern communications...
"Hello, Mr. Putin, could we interest you in an FDI opportunity, a big-time content play?" Seriously, if we get a few shills to toss octopi on the ice, could you really tell it wasn't the Leafs playing the Wings in Detroit?
you think you've got it bad?
this will be my first winter in the Texas Panhandle, where we actually get SNOW. i've never had snowy winters! and my first real winter will be without hockey!
so.
not.
fair.
Hey, you can't blame the owners, eh. Nearly every one of them will be substantially less out of pocket by running their whole operation minus the game than they would be actually running a season.
In business speak their cost of goods for the actual hockey exceeds (sometimes substantially) the revenue from that operation. COG >100% is not a good business strategy.
My guess is that in three years or so it may restart and be back to about 8 teams: Boston, New York (two teams), Philly, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago and Denver. The quality of the game will be remarkable, especially if the new league opts for the international rink.
In that case there might even be a viable market for teams from Moscow, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Prague. Those 12 teams could make one helluva league.
