Many of you recall the case of Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian reporter who was arrested after taking pictures outside a prison in Tehran in June 2003. Well, Dr. Shahram Azam, formerly a Major with the Iranian military, examined Kazemi on June 27, 2003, four days after her arrest. He has just arrived in Canada as a defector.
Here's what he says about Zahra Kazemi's injuries - and note that I've put this below the fold for content reasons. This is what we are dealing with in Iran:
"Refugee doctor Shahram Azam, formerly with the Iranian military, spoke with clinical coolness at an Ottawa news conference earlier Thursday, methodically listing a tally of bruises, broken bones and other injuries he found on Kazemi. These could only have been the result of the deliberate torture and rape, he said.
....Speaking through an interpreter, Azam recounted in a matter-of-fact way how Kazemi was brought into his Tehran hospital unconscious and on a stretcher on June 27, 2003, four days after her arrest.
....Reading from notes he said he made when he examined Kazemi, Azam said he found horrendous injuries, ranging from a broken nose and finger bones to head and body bruises, a ruptured ear drum, lash marks, torn-off fingernails and toenails and feet beaten blue.
He said as a male doctor in a military hospital, he was banned from examining a woman's genitals, but the nurse who did so told him of "brutal damage."
"As a doctor, I could see this was caused by torture," Azam said.
....Azam recited his findings in a calm, detached manner, gesturing to describe the location of some of the worst bruises.
He said a CAT scan that night showed bleeding in the brain and he learned the next day his patient was brain dead. The incident shook him.
"It was the first time I saw a patient brought in from a prison," he said. "It was so shocking for me."
He said he had to come forward to tell his story freely because "I am a human being."
Marlys Edwardh, lawyer for the family, said Azam's recollections match the description given by the women's mother, who was allowed to briefly view the body in the hospital.
This is what real torture is.
As for the Doctor, he has now proven that he is indeed a human being. Unlike the vermin in charge of the Islamic Republic of Iran. May the day come, soon, when they shall all swing from a tall gibbet and be left to rot in the sun.
The pressure on the Cdn. govt. to push its enquiries into her death is now becoming much more intense. I assume also the international attention will increase the destabilization of the mullahs' control. With even the limited internet and blog access in Iran, this defection is sure to be known to many Iranians very quickly. Could get interesting, fast.
This vicious little episode demonstrates several things: 1) the grotesqueness of the Iranian regime 2) the Canadian government's view of the sanctity of its citizens traveling outside the country and 3) the hypocrisy and cowardice of Canada's ruling leftist political & intellectual elites.
Iranian Islamic fascist government officials rape and beat a Canadian to death; shortly thereafter, Canada's ex-Prime Minister secures an oil deal with said fascists. Tip to my US friends: the next time some smug Canadian tries to tell you the Bush administration is bad, spit this back in their face.

Wow. I'll certainly have a clearer conscience knowing our torture techniques are less gruesome than Iran's.
It was a good story and one that should be brought to the attention of everyone.
But you stop yourself from debasing the intent with "This is what real torture is.".
Waterboarding is clearly on the line between torture and coersion (Bowden), but broken body parts, lashings, rape and killing are not on that line: they define torture.
Frankly, this story would never have been reported if the victim was simply made to fear drowning.

I'm Canadian. I'd lobby for Canada to give Iran the cold shoulder, at the very least. It annoys me when my government doesn't care if our citizens are tortured, raped, and murdered. (I was angry about the Maher Arar case too)

Have you been paying attention? It already HAS. Those guys at Abu Ghraib -- were they terrorist masterminds? Are the guys at Gitmo terrorist masterminds? Does the term "extraordinary rendition" mean anything to you?

As it turns out, many of them were.
One of the poor bastards at Abu Ghraib had been there before -- he'd been imprisoned and tortured by the Mukhabarat for resisting the draft. Shortly after the occupation becan he was picked up by Iraqi "police" because for the crime of having too much money on him, then sent to Abu Ghraib to be worked over by the Americans. (For the record, he considers torture by the US to have been distinctly worse.)
That's right, the USG tortured a conscientious objector to the enemy regime. Further evidence that no good deed goes unpunished.
As for Gitmo, go google "Son of Al Qaeda" and read the Frontline interview. It's quite fascinating.
Hi, I'm a Canadain and I'm outraged that canada hasn't broken off diplomatic relations with Iran over all this.
T.J. it is important to remember that what happened at Abu Ghraib was not sanctioned by the US military and was headed for prosecution before the media even becam involved. As for the 20th hijacker, I have no pity for him. He wasn't even subjected to waterboarding because Rumsfeld wouldn't sign off on it.

There are significant amount of legal evidences that they are available in public domain and are published in a book with title of “Romanticism and Revivalism of Pure Divine Motherland of Iran” which will be publish in 2007 at amazon.com with intention to educate readers that how one high profile Hezbollah figure RAFSANJANI is investing in Canada. Further, there is a formal request from the United Nations {U.N} to stop Canadian Government from harboring terrorism and stop Canada from violating Human Rights in Canada and in Iran. In addition, one petition will be draft on line in order to make sure that Canadian Government won’t be able to make any backroom deal with anyone and will be holding the Canadian Government responsible, as well as, accountable for their unjust acts.

Laws to Protect Innocent Individual from Terrorism:
According to Criminal Code of Canada Terrorism Interpretation 83.01 (1) Definitions…Canadian means a Canadian Citizen, a permanent residence within the meaning of subsection 2(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act or a body corporate incorporated and continued under the laws of Canada or a province…entity means a person, group, trust, partnership or fund or an unincorporated association or organization…terrorist activities means a) an act or omission that is committed in or outside Canada…”2.
Financing of Terrorism 83.02 of Criminal Code [C.C.]“providing or collecting property for certain activities-Everyone who, directly or indirectly, willfully and without lawful justification or excuse, provides or collects property intending that it be used or knowingly that it will be used, in whole or in part, in order to carry out a) an act or omission that constitutes an offence referred to in subparagraphs a) (i) to (ix) of the definition of “terrorist activity” in subsection 83.01 (1) or b) any other act or omission intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to a civilian or to any other person not taking an active part in the hostilities in a situation of armed conflict, if the purpose of that act or omission, by its nature or context, is to intimidate the public, or to compel a government or an international organization to do or refrain from doing any act, is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years”3. There is also 83.03 “providing, making available, etc, property or service for terrorist purpose-Everyone who, directly or indirectly, collect property, provides or invites a person to provide, or to makes available property or financial or other related services a) intending that they be used, or knowing that they will be used, in whole or in part, for the purpose of facilitating or carrying out any terrorist activity, or for the purpose of benefiting any person who is facilitating or carrying out such an activity, or b) knowing that, in whole or part, they will be used by or will benefit a terrorist group, is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not more than 10 years”4. 83.03 “Using or possessing property for terrorist purpose a) uses property, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, for the purpose of facilitating or carrying out a terrorist activity or b) possesses property intending that it be used or knowing that it will be used, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, for the purpose of facilitating or carrying out a terrorist activity, is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not more than 10 years”5.
Two Written Warnings were issued to the Canadian Government:
1. In past, sosiran has given written warning letter to the Canadian Government for not having any kind of tie with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The sosiran has been clear that any economic tie or any other ties with Islamic Republic of Iran is constituted as an illegal and null and contract between Canada and Iran, after regime change in Iran, Iranian people have no obligation to further commitment.
2. On October 31st, 2006 Persian-Journal posted an open letter to Right Honorable Prime Minister of Canada Stephen HARPER and brought to his attention that Hezbollah leader RAFSANJANI is investing money in Canada. The letter provided data that RAFSANJANI is one element of corruption in Iran. Last, the letter took spiritual approach and invited Canadian Government toward salvation. However, Canadian Government ignored the above letter, and has decided to continue participate in Human Rights violation in Iran and harboring terrorism on global scale.
Collaboration with Terrorist RAFSANJANI:
3. Canadian Government allowed terrorist RAFSANJANI to come to Canada and to make investment in Canada. RAFSANJANI is a terrorist because he is on wanted listed of Argentina authority due to his terrorist involvement in 1994 Jewish Community Center explosion. He also has conviction records in Iran for his terrorist roles in Iran.
4. According to Canadian Security Intelligence Service report and mandate, as well as, Right Honorable former Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chrétien, Canada cannot be economical base for terrorist organizations.
5. RAFSANJANI, his family and Islamic Republic of Iran have several investments in Canada and one of their investments in Canada is HWY 407 which generates revenue of “$69.6 million CDN”6.
Request:
6. This $69.6 million CDN not to be given to RAFSANJANI and other revenues from his assets in Canada. The above amount, after tax, to be given to Iranian Refugees and other Refugees and taking a load off the United Nations.
7. This $69.6 million CDN and other revenue to be use for compensation of Islamic Republic of Iran victims. First person is Zahra KAZEMI son who is residing in Canada and then there are other victims that they deserve to be compensated for crimes of Hezbollah.
8. Portion of money will be use toward legal fees for Dr. Ramin JAHANBEGLOO, who is facing trumped and without merited criminal charges.
9. Presiding judges during civil action is “must” be Iranian-Canadian.
10. Asking the United Nations to ask Canadian Government to disclose all RAFSANJANI assets to Canadians. In past, such a request was denied.
11. Asking United Nations to ask the Canadian Government for immediate deportation of individuals who have ties with RAFSANJANI and residing in Canada due to safety and security of Canadians and US citizens.
12. Asking the United Nations to ask the Canadian Government to disclose name of politicians who have accepted political campaign contribution from RAFSANJANI directly or indirectly and their immediate expulsion from parliament.
13. Asking the United Nations to ask the Canadian Government to provide financial means by the revenue which is generated from HWY 407 and other assets to Iranian people in order to form a council. This council to assist Iranian people with respect to their living conditions and assisting Iranian Refugees with respect to their rights and responsibility. There are pervasive and on going bases that authority is abusing ethnic minority in Canada; such as, Maher ARAR and there are other cases too, and are neglected by authority. In addition, Canadian Government is supporting Human Rights Violation in Iran by providing financial means in Canada and must face legal repercussions.
14. Asking from United Nations to summon Canadian politicians to International Tribunal and to face criminal charges for Harboring Terrorism in Canada, and Human Rights violation in Iran.
15. This letter to United Nations attention is constituted as a legal document that after removal of the theology state in Iran which is recognized as the Islamic Republic of Iran, all assets in Canada will be totally transfer to Iranian people and the Canadian Government will take its tax portion.
16. All tangible and un-tangible properties of RAFSANJANI in any shape or form and Islamic Republic of Iran are constituted as Iranian people’s property. All properties in any shape or form are non-transferable, non-negotiable, and shall be possess by Iranian people after regime change.
17. Anyone owned RAFSANJANI and his family property or Islamic Republic of Iran property; they shall not be subject to compensation because it is stolen property from Iranian people.
18. Reserving the right to alter or add to this legal letter.
19. Acted in good faith at all times.

hi im an 18year old college student i've just come across all this on the net and i feel utterly disgusted at every thing i just read about this poor women i feel any goverment that uses waterboarding might as well be terrorists thems selves there is no justice in that what so ever as for Zahra Kazemi i think personally if the canadian goverment dont fight against this they might as well have raped and tortured her themselves nice to know im english and we dont belive in death or torture. if i was canadian i would fight against my goverment all the way.
